Of Diets And Calories

torn asunder

since this has come up a few times, i thought i'd make a post specific to the topic, rather than have the info buried in other topics... here's one of my original posts...

for those of you "dieting" - if you reduce your caloric intake too far, you will go into starvation mode, and not only will you gain more weight, it will be fat weight. the body is very efficient at what it does, and if it thinks that it might not see any food for a while, it will store all it can as fat deposits, in case the food runs out. if you want to lose fat (as opposed to muscle, which stokes your metabolism) you simply have to eat more...

read this...

http://forums.menshealth.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/295109121/m/474106321 section #1. use the formulas to calculate how much you should be eating. if you're below 1500, (roughly) you're likely starving yourself...

oh, yeah, and then, you have to exercise, too!! <img src="http://www.detroitgothic.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":wink" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

(and here's the new stuff!)

make sure to read down to point "4. I’m doing all this, and I’m not losing fat!" - which will then lead into...

the next link is a Testosterone-Nation article, (so pardon the male-centric slant) regarding why diets tend to fail. it gets a little technical occasionally, but if you can get past that, it's a really interesting article!

<a href="http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=1392804" target="_blank">Dieting Disasters</a>

and here's a link to the <a href="http://forums.menshealth.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/855109121/m/9711004252" target="_blank">"men's health fitness forum cookbook!</a> there are some pretty good/healthy recipies in here!

next, a link to the page for <a href="http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article.do?site=MensHealth&channel=nutrition&category=abs.diet&conitem=b72a99edbbbd201099edbbbd2010cfe793cd____" target="_blank">Power 12 Foods: Never Go Hungry</a> page, which explains many healthy foods to eat, and what's good about them.

this link, an article on - <a href="http://forums.menshealth.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/295109121/m/721103321" target="_blank">clean eating</a>, not only has the calorie requirement calculator, but it discusses which kinds of carbs, protein, and fats to eat, and which to avoid, and includes links to articles which discuss the <a href="http://www.glycemicindex.com/" target="_blank">glycemic index</a> of foods. (which explains high- vs. low-GI foods, how they interact with insulin levels, etc...)

if i come up with anything else, i'll add it here, and if anyone has questions, please ask me! i'm sure i can find something out eventually!
