yesterday I started getting email (in my yahoo) notifications of replies to DGN topics. Its alot of junk email that takes up space and I have to go thru it and delete it all. I went to my DGN control center and supposedly clicked that option "off", although I dont know why it suddenly started in the first place. Only the thign is, its still happening.

now I admit Im technology challenged. Like, Im great with a rock and two sticks but I lack the patience to learn this new age widgetness. So whats a dumbass gotta do to un-do, this email notification from DGN to my yahoo?

thanky thanky

Steven

Go to "My Controls" Look up to the right for that. Then in the left-hand column choose "Email Preferences". When that screen is up, uncheck the last box, next to "Enable 'Email Notification' by default?" That will turn off the emails every time someone replies to a thread that you have started or replied in.

You're welcome. :-)

I should note, though - the messages I'm getting are marked as "topic subscriptions," and in my controls they're all in there, so hopefully removing them from subscriptions, as well as notifications, should make a difference.

My Controls>under Subscriptions click View Topics, then Uncheck all of them and click next to the Unsubscribe bar that button called With Selected. I didn't see any option to never be subscribed to posts though so you don't get any when you reply to a new topic.

Same thing happened to me, I switched it off, should work fine.

So far no further problems.

It's now set to notify you by default.

Go to MyControls at the top of the board.

Click Email Settings and choose "No email notification".

If the other setting didn't work, that may fix it. Troy said it's a board setting that had been broken for a long while that was recently fixed, thus the notifications working again.

No, because I shut it off in the ffirst place, I always shut it off. Personally I think this is just a red harring to get old users to come back from old threads with 4000 posts in them getting updated thus generating more activity on the site. But that's just a theory of mine.

At least I can turn it off (again) though, so I'm happy.

The oversimplified reason as to why its happening now, is that there was an error with one of the database files, and IPS replaced that file with a new , clean file with no edits and it reset a lot of things, so all the notification setting got set to whatever the defaults are. In this case "notify me of replies to posts".

Its only the "power users" that this is really an issue for. The random 1 post a week people (which make up 95% of DGN users) will get one email notification and thats it. Not the notify-bomb that some of us are getting.

Anyhow if you go to the section that many people above are talking about ... heres a direct link:

http://www.detroitgothic.net/index.php?act...rCP&CODE=02

and you un-check that box or change it to "daily" or some such. It should work, BUTTTTTTTTT it might not work right away it might take an hour or two , and in extreme cases it might not take effect until midnight server time. So if its "not working" its probably not that you need to do anything more , just might take a bit before it takes effect.

I also edited the notification email to have direct links to where you need to go to turn it off , rather than just the (poor) text explanation.

I think ill make a separate post with this same info. I would have replied to this sooner , but "other stuff" is the only forum i dont check very often.

Ok for the people still having trouble.

The problem is that if you go into email settings and disable notifications (as listed above) it WILL get rid of the notifications of any topics that you post in. But not the existing ones.

The existing ones you click on "view topics" and disable whatever topics you dont want to be subscribed to. If thats all of them, then you just check all of them.

I see nothing in my View Topics and my email settings show NO email notifications, yet I keep getting emails on replies on Mark and Phee's b-day and there isn't even a new reply. What the hell is up with this? That is about the 3rd time I have recieved a notification when there wasn't even a reply yet.

Not sure how to troubleshoot that one since i AM subscribed to that topic and have had no notifications.

If you have NOTHING listed as subscrptions in View Topics or View Forums, and you have Email Notifications turned off. If its been more than a day since you made the changes (if not it could just be time lag from when you changed it till the time the system actually sent the emails) The only answer is ... ghosts.
