How's it going? I was looking for resources on Gothic and Metal life in Detroit, and wound up here. Very cool forum! I plan to be here for as long as I am welcome. I haven't had a lot of time to look around yet, but I will.

A bit about me...

I currently live in St. Louis, Misery. I will likely be relocating to Detroit here in the next couple of months. A friend of mine lives up that way, and we are talking about working together in a new band. I am a guitarist / vocalist, mainly into Metal, Goth, and Industrial. There is an album with a few pics of myself in it, so feel free to go check them out.

Anyone with any kinda info on clubs, bands, nightlife, gatherings, cults, etc please feel free to let me know.

Thank you to both of you! I'm sure it will go fine. There is just nothing left in St. Louis as far as any sort of life for the darker ones. If you don't sound like Atreyu, Dillinger Escape Plan, or any number of Emo/Screamo/Mathrock/hXc bands, you will be pretty much ignored around here. As far as Gothic culture, there is one Fetish Night here. It is on Monday nights, and you see the same twenty or thirty people every week. It is a bit distressing, as I am sure you can imagine. The ONLY thing I worry about in regards to moving to Detroit, is the rampant crime that is rumored to plague the city. Is it really as bad as I have heard? Or is it an exaggeration based on the redneck mentality of my town? LOL

I think I just threw up in my mouth. Jarod knows the feeling, don't you?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

LOL

I am a major Metalhead. So that whole scene is not something I can hang with. What is funny...We have a club here called the Creepy Crawl. On Friday and Saturday nights, they run two shows per night. Typically, the early show will be Emo, etc with the late show being Metal. It is hilarious to watch the Emo crowd scatter like roaches under a flourescent light when the Metal crowds come through the doors...

The "detroit crime" thing , while still a problem, is much much less than it was , say a decade ago. We are sort of in a psudo-rennasanse now , with a lot of, while not always perfect, activity in the city and lots of work being done to try and revitalize the place.

But thats just >Detroit Proper=)

You covered a lot of this stuff alerady but here goes anyhow *drum roll* (feel free to ignore

Troy, thank you for your input. As an aside, St. Louis is currently the per-capita-murder-capitol. And I live in one of the worst areas for crime overall. I was just curious as to how Detroit is currently, because I have always envisioned Detroit (Keep in mind, based on my mother's assessment. She lived there as a girl, and would flat out refuse to go back...) as a barren wasteland of crime and decay. LOL

In answer to your part 2, yeah...I covered most of em, but here goes anyway...

Current location? St. Louis, Missouri - South City

Where from? Chester, Illinois - Better known as the Home of Popeye (No bullshit...), and Menard State Penitentiary)

Work? http://www.affordable-cases.com - I build cases, and work in shipping/recieving.

School? N/A - Hated it while I was there, and never went back. Graduated in 89. (I'm old...I know...)

Kids? 3 stepkids

Married? Married going on 11 years - Open relationship for the full term

Single? N/A

Hobbies? Theological/Philosophical studies (I claim Satanism, but I am studying currently Asatru / Odinism / Norse Mythology), True crime books/movies/TV specials, anything automotive (Demolition derbies, street machines, and NHRA in that order), graphic design/artwork, and so much more...There simply isn't room for everything.

How did you hear about DGN? Yahoo search engine

Other Stuff? Ask me. I am an open book, and cannot be offended. If someone is snide, I ignore it. If you truly wanna know, I am highly candid.

Hey, Paradox. Thanks for your reply as well.

So does everyone on here actually meet each other outside of this forum? If so, that is a definite first from anything I have seen.

We attempt to locate each other at LCC. Occasionally, we'll have a meetup at another venue.

As far as Detroit (the city proper) crime, it's not as bad as urban legend. As with any city, it depends on where you go and with whom you associate with a regular dose of random violence to innocent bystanders for the headlines. Detroit is quite vacant as it is a city built out for 1.8 million people, but now has half that number. Many nice inner-ring suburbs that are close to downtown that are worth living in as well.

Welcome to the board, and welcome to Metro Detroit/Michigan in advance. Detroit isn't such a bad place. I've been trapsing about the city for 19 years, after dark, and the worst treatment I've had is from the police, who have writen me parking tickets.

I've met about 1/2 of the "active members" of the board who live locally, and they're a pretty good bunch ( I wonder what they'd say about me....?) It's a much more active community than in other major cities, both online and out there in the real world. There are bars actually DEDICATED to Gothic/Industrial music as well as a few others that have a "Goth Night" at least once a week. There's a nice dark bar for you every day of the week. It's a good thing. Hope you enjoy it here as much as I do.

You sound like an intresting guy Darkened. To bad your months away. But hopefully those plans will come through and we'll see you eventually in real life. =)

You'd be surpized how many folk of similar interests, age and background are lurking around here. (sans the geographic location of course)

Just as an example, on a given day, looking at the "active posters list" usually i've at least met, probably at least half of the active posters for a given day as a general statement. Which seems to me like a lot. And this is comming from a guy (me) who has been virtually MIA for 2 years due to a car accident up until just recently (last month or so).

Actually, plans are going through quite nicely. I talked to my friend last night and hammered out a few details, and we are both excited. As are the rest of the band that I will be playing in. It is looking like the first week in June, give or take as far as my actual move. May be earlier, depending on how one personal financial detail pans out, but for now, we are shooting for June.

That question is answered in my initial post on the thread. LOL I have a friend that lives up there, and has offered me a position in the band that he is forming. Basically, to give you a bit more insight, I am a musician. I am hardcore. LOL My music is my main driving force, and I am one of those "I HAVE to play in a band" types. But...I refuse to play music that I can't stand just to be in a band. the band I was most recently in parted ways with me, and the rest of the scene here is pretty well dried up. Hence, basically there is nothing here for me anymore. It's time to move on, and start over. I have been in St. Louis for 12 years; played in bands the entire time, and watched my beloved Metal scene build to a point to where a popular band MIGHT draw 150 people to a show on a good nite. That was the scene a few years ago. Now, if you don't sound like the bands that are immensely popular (Atreyu, Lamb of God, Slipknot, HIM, or any combination of rap/metal bands) you will be hideously overlooked by the people that come out to see shows. My last band was picked and awarded by the editors of our local entertainment newspaper (Riverfront Times) as "Best Metal Band 2004". Even with that honor, it is a struggle getting 75 people to a show anymore. The fans here could give a shit less about the music, therefore since it is so important to me, it is time to go somewhere my talents may be appreciated. I posted ads all over the place looking for new musicians to form a new band. One forum I posted in particularly: The thread has gotten over 35 views in the past week. Not one response. Besides...I loathe St. Louis, and have since I moved here 12 years ago. LOL

God damnit. I purposly re-read this whole topic before asking that question to make sure i wasnt asking something you already covered how i missed this:

A friend of mine lives up that way, and we are talking about working together in a new band.

GRRR, how did i miss that.

"oldschoolish metal" probably will go over much better around here and given your explination it seems like a good move. But , unfortunately its still a hard gig not being a rapmetal or slipknotalike and not being a "national act".

Also, damnit, i should have spent the last 5 years making a band instead of a message board. Message board admins dont get chicks nor anyone saying "hey you guys rock!". >dusts off his late 80s Strat and Vintage 100 Ibanez

Ok thats it, DGN is now closed. Im off to start a band, see you guys at Harpos in 2 months.
