What Is The Quintessential Industrial Song?

Pretty much anything by SPK, Throbbing Gristle, or anything else on the Industrial Records label.

What defines it though?

The Genitorturers - Machine Love

In Strict Confidence - Industrial Love

Or The Blue Man Group/Stomp as they make their own instruments and use those, which to me doesn't have the industrial sound but really embodies the spirit of industrial. I remember getting into the scene and asking the typical n00b question "why do they call it industrial if it doesn't involve power tools?"

My pick:: Throbbing Gristle - Discipline

Fuck yeah.

Hehe. I bet there are industrial bands that use power tools. I've definitely seen bands doing that actually. I can think of one of those bands that used a grinder device. It made a lot of sparks and scary sounds. I think I've got a pic somewhere...

Here it is!

I think these guys were covering Discipline when this picture was taken.

A grinder is nothing new. Hell I remember part of "Ina-godda-da-vda" by Iron Butterfly (which I have on vinyl btw) where the guy takes a grinder to his guitar strings. That song is far from industrial as well, but it does embody the spirit of industrial as I said before.

Ha! Iron Butterfuly! I'm sure that was the most phallic gesture of all time. Those sparks were probably supposed to represent his magnificent sparkling honeylike love projections. I could be misunderstanding his intention, but that's what i'm enjoying in my imagination.

Well at least you're enjoying it. I just figured he was a hippie since side A of that album was all hippie sounding music.

Obligatory industrial songs that everyone can identify with:

KMFDM - Megalomaniac

CombiChrist - This Shit Will Fuck You Up

Skinny Puppy - Assimilate

My fav industrial song (not so industrial or I would have listed it with the three above):

And One - Military Fashion Show

I would have said that one, but it's a bit to poppy to be like thee definitive industrial song of all time.

Considering it's about as far from industrial as one can get yeah.

Also I can't identify with Combichrist at all.
