DarkenedCharm
Can anyone give me an idea of what I can expect as far as cheap rent? Is there such a thing? I am talking a one bedroom apartment (Two bedroom if affordable enough...) with NO frills. I have no issue with making something out of nothing. you should see the place I am in now. It is horrid, but it is only $225 per month. Any ideas?

Nienna
I'm also looking.. any ideas anyone?? Looking for a 2 bedroom in Southfield/Redford/Livonia area... no more than $700 a month...
Jarodaka
I'm guessing $225 can get you a raw or hard loft around downtown or Midtown. I'm not sure where to find these advertised, though. To find a rental loft you can turn into your home, check alternative media, says Michael Martorelli of LoftWerks. You also can try driving around downtown and keeping an eye open for curtains, a tulip or any sign of life in the upper windows of an old commercial building. Fierce Critter
SOOO depends on what area you're looking at. You can get a really nice place for $400-$500 downriver. Nicer and more expensive in Wyandotte (safe neighborhoods), or a little less nice but less expensive in Lincoln Park (bit closer to 'Troit, so slightly more crime, but waaaay bigger places for the $$). My husband and I can't afford the Livonia area. Our budget is $600 a month. We could find something in Ferndale, or, again, downriver. So, depends on where you're talking. If you want an idea of rents downriver, check out The News Herald's classifieds. It's how we're apartment searching while still in NC.

Black Sunday
you can get a good apartment in Hamtramck between $300-400, for some reason some people don't want to live in Hamtramck, I like it quite a bit. I've had 3 apartments there. First one was clean with living room, kitchen and bedroom and bathroom for $300 a month and all utlities paid. Second was slightly bigger for $395 a month. Then I moved into a two bedroom with lots more space and hardwood floors for $550 a month. My friend has a two bedroom that is pretty decent for $395 a month, it's an upper flat. The best way to find apartments in Hamtramck is to go there and pick up a copy of 'the citizen' which is the town newspaper that comes out once a week with plenty of ads for apartments. I know of a 1 bedroom in Royal Oak for $650 too.

DarkenedCharm
Awesome! Thank you to everyone. Seems rents around there are pretty comparable to here. My 'hood is preciesly that. Tha 'hood LOL I don't mind living in a SORT of shitty neighborhood, as long as it isn't TOO shitty. Hamtrmack actually sounds great, price-wise. I will likely check there first. LadyWindstone
In the neighborhood I live in you can get a two bedroom house for between $650 and $800 a month. They also take Section 8 around here. The elementary school is right around the corner and there are great deals at grocery stores within walking distance. Great for first time buyers as well.
