uh does it have something to do with showing off how much one's donated? cuz i don't see how it could be much more meaningful than join date OR post count =P

That was an artifact left over from ancient DGN times. It was a modification that never got installed, somehow that single line in the profile survived. (its gone now)

It would be nice if somehow the key item generated by the board being "post count" it would be "true post activity" or some such. For instance a new topic would be worth more than a one-liner reply to a topic saying "tacos". Even though any such thing is just for fun, and easily abused, it would more accurately reflect activity, than just a raw post count.

I hate points systems. Join date and post count are the only things in my eyes that mean anything.

i dont like post count ranks. been on forums wher mr X shall we say has joined 3 years ago and been a spacker in all 3 millio9n of his posts and somehow thinks that his false and very illegal advice is more valid than newbie (who happens to be a solicitor) and newbie gets flamed bad for crossing said member.

i just tend to go of personal experience, if mr X acts a twat, he's a twat, if mr newbie acts level headed and reasonable then thats who i go for.

post counts and join dates dont mean shit., its just elitism to consider it so and i've seen so many wankers act that way due to that system

Longevity and long term activity do have a high value on websites that require such things to be useful. Its a nice, at least general (even if flawed) indicator of such activity.

Its true that wankers can use such things to be bastard snoots, but nothing about the information itself is inherently bad. Jackoffs can make anything seem jack off-ish.

I try not to confuse info itself, with the bastards that might use that info in negative/unfair ways.

Information by its very definition does have some meaning.

I think what the idea here is that we are afraid of the idea of info being used in a negative way that our judgment becomes not based on reality, but on emotion.

Post count means "i posted this many posts".

Join date means "I joined on this date".

It doesn't mean anything important but it clearly does have meaning. Its not just a random string of incomprehensible data.
