Ride Board Info

Recommended Posts

Thanks for helping her out, Odims Sphere. I was out of internet contact for a few days.

It's rough terrain I have to negotiate, between those who keep asking me about it, and those who don't want the ride list publicized. People complain that I promote it either not enough, or too much. Everyone seems to either love or hate the concept [or something].

Who knows? As long as people get to their events, that's all I care.

Edit: And before anyone jumps on me, I should note: the word "people" in this post does not refer exclusively/particularly to the DGN message board. I use the word in a much more general sense. This is not the only group of people I have mentioned the listing to. So, chill. Peace. Etc.

Let them complain I say. You don't make any money doing it (except maybe a ride or two here and there) and you maintain it solely. They don't like it only because they don't need it. If they did you'd bet they'd change their opinion on the matter.

I've intentionally not added a "DGN Rideboard" for a few different reasons, but the main one is just that i don't want to have to take away eyeballs from your list, thus screwing the people we are supposedly trying to help by having the lists split. A minor reason is that i didn't want to be in the business of dealing with rides related drama, but i think that can be deflected much easier than i once thought.

My offer still stands to increase the usefulness and visibility of your ride board info by hosting it here on DGN. Hell we could integrate it right into user profiles , with locations, willingness to drive / distance / needed rides etc. My understanding of web coding has been increasing quite steadily and even though its a bit of work, i could set this up fairly rapidly.

It'd still be your baby, you'd still administer it, it just would get a ton more publicity and it could still be listed both here and on your own personal site and everywhere else you already do.

If the goal really is to get as many people as possible to see it / use it, hosting it here would be more advantageous than on a 'personal' site only. You can still publicize it exactly as you do now, nothing about that would change.

Also there would be more "admin" types lurking about to help out if people have questions and they could get answers much faster.

People not necessarily looking for rides would see it and have it in the back of their minds when the need did arise.

Also it would benefit from the features that DGN has, that is , subscriptions specifically. People could subscribe to it, and get auto-notified when new listings were added or when existing listings were changed. All as part of the login that already 1500+ people have.

Hi Troy,

Thanks for you continuing offer, ideas, concern, and support. I do have a different philosophy behind the Rideboard I run though, so I will still have to pass on your offer. My experiences and observations, plus my heart, tell me that I need to follow my original concept. Someone else might do it differently. I'll leave it at that. This is nothing against you personally.

Anyway, I have not been aware of any "drama" involved between persons using the rideboard. Most of the BS has been stuff directed at me personally. But that seems to be lessening over the years.

And as far as questions and fast service, that really hasn't been a problem for me either. I got it covered. But thanks for the concern.

For better or worse, the Rideboard will remain independent at least for now. As I get older, I might stop caring, at which point, I will gladly give my blessings to someone else if they want to set up a new list in a new format. I'm not the first person to do a rideboard, and I won't be the last. I'm just the only person around here doing anything like it [as far as I know].

I certainly can't stop anyone else from setting up another carpool listing, but I do thank you for your spirit of cooperation in not setting up another one.
