LadyKay
Okay I got a silly question. I want to dye my hair again, but I am in the pool a lot. Will the chlorine mess up my hair coloring? I don't know much about this sort of thing.
know_buddy_kares
I believe so... Back when I had a pool i was in it everyday, and it even altered my natural hair color.
bean
Yes. some colors worse than others. To help reduce damage, drench your hair with water right before going in, maybe even put in a little leave in conditioner. Thoroughly rinse your hair immediately after you get out of the pool. At Sally Beauty Supply, they have a shampoo for swimmers. It's ION brand, but I can't remember the name of it. That shampoo helps too.

Guest Troy Spiral Newbie
I don't know my head from my ass when it comes to taking care of hair. (somehow my hair manages to stay soft despite my ignorance) I just buy the same dang feria hair dye out of a box and throw it on my head. Been doing the same thing for like 10 years or some such. I think the crap i use is called "Starry Night" but i just look for the hot goth chick on the box with the oldschool makeup & hair like i like and buy whatever that is. But, i did find a few things on the net, which all basically say what bean water said already but heres a quote: Remember that the chlorine in pools can strip or dull color, so pour bottled water (which can lessen the effects of chlorine) in your hair before swimming, and consider wearing a swimming cap. You should also use a quality shampoo and conditioner made especially for color-treated hair. Most companies that make hair dyes also make these types of shampoos and conditioners. Nienna
My grandma's hair tended to turn green in the 80's when she went swimming. I think it's mostly blondes or forsted people who need to worry about it. Chlorine WILL damage any hair it touches, colored or not, but the more modern hair dyes seem to be less suceptible to this. Destroit
Okay I got a silly question. I want to dye my hair again, but I am in the pool a lot. Will the chlorine mess up my hair coloring? I don't know much about this sort of thing. I actually believe, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong because my rusty knowledge isn't always on my side, but if you have bleached blonde hair it will actually turn your hair GREEN. Not bright shock green or anything, just a tint, and black dye will definately start to fade in chlorinated water. Other dyes will too I believe, although not quite as fast. Chlorine is fairly corrosive, as you've already probably figured out, and makes your hair straw-ish after awhile, but anything acidic like that will strip out any kind of color in time. I guess best you could do is make sure you condition your hair, especially as soon as you can right BEFORE you go swimming, because it will coat your hair and help maintain the color. But as for drastically messing it up, most likely it won't, it takes a little while for that to happen.
Rayne
Red fades REALLY bad. I use ION colour and John Freida RedHead Shampoo, Conditioner and Colour Sealing Glaze ... after just ONE trip in the pool in Hawaii I had to redye my hair. Now I need it redone again because I went swimming in Virginia when I was there in April. Hair dye and chlorine don't go together at all.

GOREgeouslyDecorated
it's especially bad it you plan on bleaching - generally for the first little while freshly dyed hair and chlorine generally do not mix - try wearing a swim cap
LadyKay
Hmmmmm....maybe I should wait till summer is over. A swim cap is a good ideal but I think I have too much hair to stuff into one of them things. Thanks for all the advice!
