Some Paintin's

I painted these with Elmer's Painttastic brush pens. I love those fuckin' things. They're sold at Toys R Us for about 4.29.

This first one followed what was probably my single heaviest binge week. It IS symbolic, but such that I didn't grasp the symbolism till a while later just sitting and looking at it. Does that make it more meaningful or less meaningful, y'think?

This one is the ghost of Liza Minelli after getting punched in the mouth, I guess.

I like the second image. The lines-into-whitespace really produces an interesting effect, especially because my eyes are first drawn to the red lips. While I've noticed instantly that it is a face, the fact that half of it is not visible to me produces an interesting effect -- my brain already added the second half, but I've seen it before when someone looked at me and half their face vanished into a shadow/bright light.

Looks kinda sad, pouted. Although, I didn't quite think "being punched in the face" until I looked back, quirked an eyebrow, and nodded.

I suppose that I'm most intrigued when images are made from collusions of broken lines set on whitespace, shape being affirmed by the extensions of what's there but not by distinct outline.

Thanks for the descriptive critique. =) When I said, "Liza Minelli having been punched in the mouth," it was more a jab at my lack of skill. It wasn't intended to be any particular woman, known or unknown... and I didn't know I was drawing half a face until I had everything done (except the green of the eyes and red of the lips) and looked at it and just... it felt done.

I think I was inspired partly by the movie poster for Chinatown, where Faye Dunaway's face is disembodied in Jack's cigarette smoke. But now I kinda wanna try more of the same technique with a more definite subject matter. And with a better media. Paintastics are fun to use, but they kind of came out looking like marker.
