BF, you probably have heard Das Ich (I know you've been to City Club to have caught the tune that's in rotation), just not to recognize them (obviously). 'Destillat' gets played often, there. I might also recommend for individual downloads 'Erde Ruft', 'Gottes Tod' (there's something about that title that gives me a little shiver of joy), and 'Dem Ich Den Traum'.

And Tom Waits. There isn't much more to say about him, really, other than the fact that I'm surprised no mentioned the duet he sang with Peter Murphy. 'Christmas Sucks'. Hilarious.

As for bands I wish more people listened to, I'm not really sure I could list any. Too often I guess I leave myself rather blind to good music that doesn't, for whatever reason, catch on. With that in mind, my list will be extremely short, and probably completely off-target.

Mum

Godspeed You Black Emperor!

Joy Electric, if only so that someone else will get the damn tune stuck in his/her head and share in my misery!

Don't forget the Nick Cave and Tom Waits cover of "What a Wonderful World"

Maori tribal chant.

Oh, wait.... you mean bands... nevermind. ;)

I'd have to throw in:

Split Enz

Crowded House (Some of their stuff is actually quite dark - "Hole in the River," "Into Temptation" etc)

Richard Thompson (including me. I keep meaning to follow-up and listen to more than the one album I have but I never get around to it)

Thomas Dolby's non- "Science" stuff

David Gray

Nick Drake (tragic genius)

Cheap Trick

Chrissie Hynde - solo or with the Pretenders

Peter Gabriel

Kate Bush

REM pre-"Out of time"

U2 pre "Josha Tree"

James Taylor - strictly acoustic, not his overproduced shlock (James should listen himself)

Polish funeral hymns - Seroiusly. Some of the saddest, darkest stuff I've ever heard.

Tom Waits. Okay, he's not goth, but he's kind of depresing and that's close.

And Muddy Waters.

Hey, He is my fav. I own almost all his albums and some bootleg shit. I love Tom Waits. But I think not enough people have heard me sing in the shower. Now THAT is some talent.

Everyone needs a little more "Boys of Summer".... er, I mean, Don Henley.

And I think everyone could use some Velvet Acid Christ too.

I'm with MarsDustDoug on this one..... Angelspit = awesome.

And I'm sure people could use some KMFDM. =3

A daily dose of Journey, Kansas, Heart and Fleetwoof Mac works too.

Techno period. Sorry but I am on a bit of a rant......I am 42 and most of my friends don't share or understand my obsession and so I go alone.......most of the time. How can you call yourself evolved musically when you only listen to one venue, and/or won't try new things.....and have been listening to the same crap for 20 yrs???

When I moved out of state I was in awe of how advanced the west coast was musically. I heard things you don't even get exposed to here. And people still go see Bob Segar lol. Its hellarious.

I am talking to a young (like 25) yr old drummer last night who has been in the local scene for awhile and I ask him his musical tastes. He throws out names of 20 bands that are popular, who all sound alike and are copy cats of rock bands I listened to 20-30 yrs ago. BIG YAWN.

Steve Roach.... This guy is AMAZING, the most haunting and out there ambient music I have ever heard... electronic soundscapes mixed with tribal instrumentation, all insturmental. Complex and feverishly spiritual music, that will leave you in another dimension...
