I Hate Doctor Drew.

Recommended Posts

I agree that he does have some strong traditional values, but I think that he advocates healthy relationships and communication above all else.

I do, however, hate his stupid radio show. Mostly because his co-hosts are always fucking idiots, and it's just not funny.

are you talking about loveline? I used to love that show before adam left... :(

Yeah. Adam was... tolerable. He was obnoxious, but endearing. I don't know the new guys name, but every time he opens his mouth I just want to smack him. Nothing he says is EVER helpful.

i don't mind stereo type roles to much except well i tend not to be the bread winner  but the problem i have with the guy is unless it's a matter of biology his advise makes me wonder if he's ever actually been in a longterm relationship that or he's been with some pretty cold and clinical chicks. I've ended up with alot of bipolar girls...alot alot and when it comes to that his advise is really lacking

I love Doctor Drew, and a lot of what he says is relevant. Some of it is just things that people don't really want to consider. Biological or psychological, he's pretty damned on point a lot of the time. He can tell when someone is fucked up, and how they are fucked up by just talking to them on the phone.

As in, he'll speak with them and they'll describe something going on and he'll say "When did your father leave your life?" and he'll be on the money.

But also, keep in mind, with a lot of this stuff, it is opinion. Opinion based on having that show for over 15 years as well as doing the TV show and addiction medicine stuff, but opinion.

Well-informed opinion, just like most anything psychological is going to be.

When i used to drive more If Dr. Drew was on, i usually ended up listening to it. Either that, NPR (if it was actually a talk show) or last resort, some rambling facile religious show. There aren't many choices for me at 2am in the morning in my car (or whenever hes on nowadays). Even if i don't agree with what they are talking about I'd rather hear people talk about "real" things or academic/philosophical subjects than listen to the same 40 songs get played over and over again.

The problem with all such shows is that they give you the impression you can sum up someones entire existence based on 10 minutes of listening to them talk. Just cant be done.

Don't get me wrong he (dr. drew) DOES make good observations, just i think they tend to be far to "rush to judgement" and don't take enough factors into account. That's just how TV / Radio work if they want more viewers, they need to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Not many want to hear any in-depth realistic analysis they just want the popcorn version. Its the natural progression of Marshall McLuhan's "The Medium Is The Message".

True he makes smart "general statements" and good (again very generalized) "health" comments, but in terms of the specific advice for the specific people its just not realistic.

Some never get any real exposure to real academic psychoanalysis nor ever learn about it and assume this gloss-over stuff that is on TV/Radio is just the way it is.

Also yeah, he does tend to assume that if your "moral values" aren't the same as grandpas, your probably fucked up. Which , to be honest is partly true. Not because grandpas values were better, but because it takes so much mental strain to be an individual rather than conform to the western concepts of morality that in the process you tend to end up being an "outsider" which is often hard to maintain without developing more neurosis than the average "follower" type would.

Sort of a cultural self-fulfilling prophecy.
