89.3 FM WHFR is a college radio station based in dearborn. Currently the effective broadcast range is not as large as it should be due to some (legal and other) issues. A rouge guesstimate of the broadcast range and to check and see if you can hear us on FM in your area:

Can you hear us? Broadcast map:

Regardless you can year WHFR on the Internet anywhere: WHFR.FM

Yes I'll have to run my mouth. One of the (many) lose station rules is you cant go more than 15 minutes or 3 tracks without some kind of commentary. (they aren't particularly strict but still) So god help us all.

I've volunteered, or rather, been volunteered to fill in for two DJ slots on 80.3 FM WHFR Dearborn next week due to a ton of scheduling issues with existing DJs wanting to go out of town. I used to work for WHFR back in ancient history and have been poking around the place recently and have punched all the proper tickets and crossed all the proper T's and doted all the proper i's to be able to do the job.

The first time slot is a freak-in techno slot if you can believe way late night on Monday. A format that i actually do know quite a bit about even though i tend to complain about its intersection with "goth clubs".

The second slot is a show slot they don't know what they want to do with, at least temporarily and i was asked to "Pick your own format". So that's shall be Gothic / Industrial on Tuesday night with your host , Troy Spiral. Mwahaah. =P

This is a good deal for me since my health is really shitty, but improving. I can sneak in there late night, not have to deal with more than 1 or 2 other people , then come home and crash. Another upside is that part of the station mandate is to help promote non-profit entities. I explained what DGN is, and that we don't actually qualify "legally" as a non-profit and was told due to the nature of DGN , i could pimp it on air pretty much as much as i felt reasonable. Woot.

Events! (since you asked)

This is a huge event, or should be for the people here anyway.

After all this board evolved out of the original Spiral board which existed for the old radio show.

I'll tune in if I remember to, I'm pretty bad about that stuff :(

Jon and I are driving down Southfield x-way through Dearborn, switching radio channels, when I hear "I Walk The Line Between Good and Evil". Hella-what? I've never heard that outside of City Club before. So we stick with the station, when some guy calling himself Troy Spiral comes on, and starts talking about, amongst other things, something called "The Spiral Board".

Date: Somewhere's around mid November, 2001.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Troy? If you're taking requests, it sure would be cool to hear that song again - for old time's sake.

I'll DEFINITLY see if I can't get it in. It'd be cool if it did, but being in Howell I dunno...

Thanks for the kind words sir.

I'll be in town... pretty sure I won't be up at that hour since i have an interview in the morning. Will we be able to listen to the broadcast on the web after the fact?

Unfortunately no. There has been talk of on-demand brodcasts but its all just vaporware and i dont think it will ever actually happen. :o Although i could, i guess once i get more familair with what they have down there, record it myself and get permission to basicly just host it somehwere or just hand out CDs.

Sure critter, i will do it. And thanks for that story and the encouragement. I kind of wish in my heart of hearts that things would have turned out differently and i was still in my old timeslot, still doing "the troy spiral show".

If i actually get a regular show. Right now im just the station DJ fill-in bitch. I dont mind though really, i've always been good at taking orders and i like to help out just in general. Who knows maybe next week they'll have me doing metal and blues for all i know. The station fill in bitch has no opinion! :o

I do think i might have that gothic night locked in for like a month or something as the DJ that does that show is on vacation or some such and they aren't 100% sure if shes coming back or not. I really would prefer a slot later in the week like Friday/Saturday and not quite so late at night, but beggars cant be choosers.

Hah. I'm definitely not Alan Almond (the pillow talk guy) but I'll try. I've been told i sound like a "friendly voiced tom Leykis" which im not sure if that's a compliment or an insult. =P After i heard that i did think about stealing his "blow me up tom" thing that he does after a caller gets off the line with various explosion sounds. But with sort of a goth theme. Seemed a bit too cheezy but who knows, might grab some extra listeners.

Other than the fact that there is currently one particular issue (read one person) causing massive drama behind the scenes i really need to just stay off DGN for a day or so to work on the playlists.

Most of the Radio DJs just work off a rotation list and/or make stuff up as they go along or right before the show. I work on my playlists like they are term papers. I've been agonizing over both the "Techno" show and the gothic show for like 30 hours already.

The techno show is going to be hardcore geeked-out Kraftwerk heavy. Then to make up for my techno sins , the goth show is going to be >zero
