Moving Back to Michigan goal

Recommended Posts

We got word from family today that they're planning a big celebration for my mother's 80th birthday. They're aiming for the weekend of June 26th.

We decided the best gift we can give her is to be back by then. Basically, this means I'm going to have to LIVE eBay for the next couple months, while Jon busts ass at work to try to gather information on places he might apply for a job.

We could use any help we could get on a few fronts. First of all would be tips on places Jon might apply for a job. Right now, he builds security turnstiles - basically huge revolving doors that have complex mechanisms that control who gets in, who gets out, etc. Jon builds those "complex mechanisms". He's hoping to seek out some places in Michigan, particularly the Detroit area, who have placed orders from the company he works from now. He's thinking he can send them a resume and let them know he's looking for a job doing repairs/installs on those types of things, and that he basically comes pre-trained with knowledge of about every unit they make. Right now, these companies send a few guys down here once in a while to be trained by Jon and his co-workers on how to do repairs/installs. So we're hoping they might even create a position for him if he lets them know what he comes with knowledge and skill-wise.

We know of a place in Ferndale, as well as the auto companies (Jon builds units for Ford & GM on a regular basis), as well as the home base of ADT & a couple other security companies. But if anyone might know of places he could try, please let us know. Generally we're talking security companies, and sometimes fencing companies too.

The other front is places to live. We sort of have our hearts set on downriver, and most especially Wyandotte. But we have to be flexible, due to the pets. Our budget is $600 a month, which is VERY feasible for a flat or small apartment in Wyandotte. And people renting flats tend to be more flexible where pets are concerned. But, again, if anyone knows anyone who rents who might be willing to work with us (extra rent or deposit for instance), we'd appreciate the info.

Damn. And we have to sell that motorcycle, too. Can't afford payments on it while paying $600 rent, so it has to be gone before we move... Damned details...

Lots of local job info (michigan specific)

Before i got to that part in your post about ebay i was thinking "probably a good idea if she looks into more ebaying..."

Wish i was rich i'd just cut you guys a check for like 10k and that'd give you plenty of "buffer" to get things sorted out and cut down on the stress of "having to find something fast" a bit.

Cant really think of any specific suggestions , at least not new ones. >ponder

:smiling: Thanks for the thought, Troy.

But coming up with the $$ is the least of our problems, and not at all what I need - or would even want - from anyone. So I'm not to be construed as soliciting $$.

We've been in a similar situation before, when we were living in Florida an desperate to get back up north. We're pretty good at buckling down and getting done what needs to be done to make a move.

This is going to be more complicated than that was, but it's doable.

  • 2 weeks later...

Geez - I wish I knew you needed a house - I had mine up forever in Wyandotte off 12th for a year and we didn't find anyone for a while cuz rent was $700 and all we had offers from was students who couldn't afford it. I know right now Fords is hard to get in to unless you know someone in there. But I do know of plenty of apartments closer to the livonia/westland area that are really nice places - But Visteon is your best bet probably but theres a wait for that too

Thanks for the thoughts. :)

$700 a month is too much. Unless Jon ends up in a job that pays at least $2.00 an hour more than he makes now.

I bring in a healthy side income. But it's not a steady thing, so we won't base basic living expenses on it.

We lived in an apartment complex near the post office for a year and a half - and LOVED it. That's the area I'd hope we can get into. Our rent there was $585 a month. We'd apply there again, but they don't take pets.

As for jobs, there's a slight chance he might be able to stay with the same company as they're being acquired by a bigger company that we're gambling might have a use for him up in Michigan. He's pretty specialized in what he can apply for.
