Ok so I have decided to quit taking my medication for a bit. I would like to see how I am off it for a bit. I have been off it for about 2 weeks now. It has been very hard. I have a hard time sleeping and my nerves are bothering me ( making me rock back and forth and twitching alot) I am drinking plenty pf water. But is ther eanythign else I can do ( those who have been through this situation before) these are what meds Im on

Ritalin

Trazadone

Trileptal

Adivan

Paxil CR

Ive cold turkey all of them

my current doctor and therapist know and they said give it a go

they where going to lower my dosage till nothing is left but I asked him this instead.

He said why not

so just a question

I don't have any experience in getting off these medications, but I know they tend to be addictive. It sounds like you're experiencing withdrawl.

I have had to do this with pain medication many times, and found that the only way to get through it is live through a month of hell, or gradually reduce. The twitching was more than I could handle. Good luck!

No, we certainly don't all have this - not to a clinical degree.

Becky, I highly doubt the doctor said it was o.k. to go cold turkey on those meds. I have a lot of authorities at my disposal when it comes to medicine & medication, and NONE of them advocate this.

Sorry if this seems cold, but I really think you need to reconsider doing this. For one thing, you are posting about a lot of struggles & harships right now - lack of friends, losing your dwelling, etc. This just seems a REALLY REALLY scary time to just drop all those meds altogether.

Please, Becky. Think and take care of yourself.

exactly what critter said ^

i have never had to take medications like that but even the ones i have had to take for other things my doctor has told me- don't just stop taking your medication, talk to me about this first! and that wasn't even for anything like what you need yours for.

and i really really agree with what critter said here:

"This just seems like a REALLY REALLY scary time to just drop all those meds althogether."

Having a child on meds similar to yours, I know for a fact that you cannot just go "cold turkey". It will make things worse. FC is correct: you have lost your home, your boyfriend is away, and you have discussed a lack of friends and a ride to go to the clubs. It makes no sense for you to stop taking your meds. You'll end up worse off than you already are. Please don't do it.

I don't know much about these types of drugs. I do know that Ritalin is for ADD in adults and in children.

After doing just a little skimming research on the net, here's some information for you to look into because I agree with the above responses: No drug that's mood altering/enhancing such as the ones you're taking should just be quit cold turkey. (They have you on 2 anti-depressants at the same time?)

On to more concrete information than simply my opinion:

The Paxil Database - The link goes directly to withdraw symptoms and recommendations.

Noteworthy information about Trazadone

Withdrawal and Atvian

Withdrawal from Trileptal

These are warnings about Ritalin. There is information about using this medication with anti-seizure medicine.

NC, you need to talk to your doctor again about this or else go to another doctor, at a community clinic perhaps. I'm not a doctor by any means, but I have been around people who are epileptics and I can't imagine that he'd simply yank the Trileptal out from underneath you or was this drug given to you for some other condition?

My other question would be, does your doctor know what your therapist is prescribing for you (if s/he is prescribing anything for you)? If not, the two either need to talk or trade medical records so that they're not counter-acting each other as some of these drugs seem to indicate might be the case.

Yes, not a good time NC. VERY much not a good time. Especially when I think of the time you went ON some of these medications and you were very self abusive (remember the cutting...) THAT was when you were living WITH your boyfriend and seemed much more content with life.

Get back on the meds. If you need help finding a community clinic and or free/low cost med advice, post and I am sure someone will find it for you.

I fear for you.

I was on a heavy dosage of Ritalin and it was not working so I cut my self off and caused a host of other problems. My doc understod what I was trying to do but insisted that I was weened off so that I would be the person I was befor it.

The sudden shock to my system made me lose what little common sence an ADHDer has. I became not only a danger to others but to my self as well. you know forgetting about putting up safty mesures for experaments that that I should not have been doing in the first place.

Now just stop and think if the sudden lose of one med can do that, what will 5 do?

I've done it , accidentally (or so i say) for a few days here and there and massive insomnia and mood swings, and headaches was the result. Havnt done it for any extended period.

The drugs you list off are similar to the ones im currently on (not the same but similar)

For some reason i cant help but think maybe just cut out a few of them rather than all at once, theres no huge rush to get off every last one is there?

don't feel stupid. just don't do something stupid like stopping meds you might really need without talking to a good doctor first.

maybe you don't even need to be on all of them, true. but since you have been on them you should stop taking them safely and not cold turkey. i can really understand the not wanting to be on them anymore but don't just stop for that reason. check out your options first with a doctor and some research online too so you are better informed.

i feel really stupid about this thread

sorry 100x over again for this stupid thread

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

your not being stupid. It is a simple matter of something's not working right maybe this or that or these possibly a combination of two or more.

Remember doctors are like every body ( myself not included) they are flawed. They can't get it right every time. Didn't your Doc discuss dosage adjustments over time? If not that just proves the flawed theory.

Talk to your Doc get back on a new run and keep a Cold journal i.e.

04-02-05 8:00 AM I took X, Y, and Z drugs I feel like

04-02-05 8:30 AM I feel like _______

04-02-05 9:56 AM I feel like _______

Hi Becky! If it helps, I've had a lot of experience with all the medication except Ritalin.

Definitely ween yourself off of them. It doesn't have to take a long time if you're careful. I've been on all of these and they are all very addictive. The twitching, shakes and such are definitely withdrawl. I've forgotten (for real) to take my Xanax which is very similar to Adivan. Even if I miss one day I'm miserable the next day until I take another one. I only have to take one a day so you would think it wouldn't matter, but it does.

Please don't been sorry you posted about this. Getting someone else's opinion always helps! I don't know what all you've been going through because I'm never around but I do have experience with all of this. Take care.

I'm not going to repeat what othrs have said.

I've never had to take any type of meds.

I did read in a health magazine that Ritalin has the same type of effect as cocaine. In fact, it was an article about how parents are getting addicted to the kids ritalin because of the calming effect.

Just something to think about.

Ritalin does have the same type of effect as cocaine unless you have somthing akine to ADD or ADHD so If a person is addicted to ritalin because of the calming effect the mostlikly need it after they are taken out and horse wiped for child abuse that is.

horse wiped

How do you get "horse wiped"?

I can tell you that what Vater says is true. My ex husband tried one of my son's Ritalin pills once. He had heard that it had the same effect as cocaine. It didn't do anything but chill him out. At that time, he didn't know that he was BiPolar and he thought it would keep him up.
