What are some of the best pet names you have ever come up with?

Me, I think was these two kitties I had in AZ. Wisper and Willow. Bro and sis. Quite a cute pair.

I took my dog to the vet today and someone already has the name hambone! How often does that happen?? And the lady said they get lots of 'ham' names. Hammy, Ham....ham hock......I thought I had a dog with a very unique name but I guesses not.

Oh and when I was 15 I got this dog from a perverted ol drug dealer so we named the dog perv cause I got him from my 'uncle pervie' lol.

And it fits cause dogs is always lickin balls and ass.

I had a lab named Sisu.. "sisu" is a finnish word for gutsy. She was too, she was brave and sweet.. she was the first one to see our cats litter of kittens (when i was a kid)... the cat came to get her and brought her in to visit them and i guess they crawled all over her.

aww..

And now I have a girl cat named by my sis' man.. her name is Charlie Prescott Whitticker the 3rd. :)

And my boy cat is Hobbes.. after Calvin and Hobbes.. he acts like the character so thats his name.. not TOTALLY original, but of all the kitties i have met, none had that name..

:)

I try to give my pets unusual names. To date:

Fred, Alice, Grace & Martha - hamsters. Fred was originally Blanche. But when Alice got pregnant with Grace & Martha, as well as 14 other little pink jellybeans, he got his own "pad" and a name change.

Ringo - guinea pig. He was originally Lucy, a name I'm just plain fond of. But then we found out he was male, so he got named off my favorite Beatle. At the time, I was playing acoustic guitar in coffee houses & bars. So I wrote a "swing your stein and sing along" song about him.

He's my pet guinea pig Ringo

My pet guina pig Ringo

I had two hamsters that had 16 babies

but that's something you really don't need to know.

Something you really don't need to know.

'bout my pet guinea pig Ringo

My pet guinea pig Ringo

He used to be Lucy 'til I took him to the vet

And I found out he was a buck, not a doe

found out he was a buck, not a doe.

My pet...

My pet...

He loves to eat fruit and he loves to eat veggies

but his very very favorite is 'mato

very very favorite is 'mato

my pet...

My pet...

He's got a brown mop top and a real big nose

so I named him after a Beatle

named him after a Beatle

My pet...

my pet...

mypet...

call him a cavy!!!!

Ahem. Anyway...

(Weird. I have to split this into 2 posts for some reason... it won't post otherwise...)

Skank - mouse. I was into ska bigtime when I got her. She was wonderful.

Twitch - mouse. Twitch is a good name for a mouse.

The cats:

Ripley - named after Sigourney Weaver's character from Alien. My memory was prodded when driving down to NC through Ohio and we passed through a city with the same name.

Grover - he did this cute growling thing as a kitten. "Growler" morphed into "Grover", who is also my favorite Muppet.

Lincoln (RIP) - I'd recently been to Washington DC for the first time. I've always been fascinated with the president.

Xena - I'm fond of strong, female characters.

Jack (RIP) - Jack was an orange tabby kitten. A simple, fine name like Jack just suited him.

Asia - my Siamese (who might be Tonkinese). I wanted an Asian name. Figured you couldn't get more Asian than that.

Gus - just a name I like. Probably inspired by the mouse from Cinderella. I like to say his full name is Augustus.

Isabeau - from the movie Ladyhawke. Gus is her brother, and Navarre would have been too incestuous for him.

Fletcher - just another name I like. From both the books (made into movies with Chevy Chase) and Fletcher Christian from Mutiny on the Bounty.

Marty - a nod finally to something Jon likes. From Marty McFly of Back to the Future, Jon's favorite movie.

Tiki - our 3-legger. Jon was making bamboo tiki carvings at the time. Another nod to Jon. And she's an unusual looking black cat with awesome eyes. A name reminiscent of voodoo or tribalism suits her.

Calder - I wanted a white cat when we found him, a little black & whiter. If I'd have gotten a white cat, I would have named it that after the Calder dairy in Lincoln Park. He got the name anyway.

Phoebe - just another name I like. From "Phoebe Figalilly" of Nanny and the Professor, and NOT from "Friends".

Ray - Ray is female. We had a mama cat with 4 2-week old kittens. Two were white, two were grey. We referred to the grey ones as "big grey" and "little grey". Jon morphed that into "Big Ray". And it stuck.

The dogs:

Indy (RIP) - pretty much taken from Indiana Jones.

Oakley - was going through a book of pet names. Oak was in there, and we added the "ly". He's a purebred, and we were jokingly threatening to register his name as "James Taylor's Tribute to Indy".

Tuckle - rabbit. Jon was into Brian Jacques' Redwall books, featuring medieval talking animals. Pikkle was a name of a rabbit in there, and I morphed that into Tuckle.

I believe I covered it all. :D

Oh - one kitten that was dropped on our doorstep in a basket we named Moses. He was sucessfully adopted out.

And the 2nd white kitten (Phoebe's sister) was Zoey.

Ziara

pronounced: zee-AIR-uh

Kind of a combination of Zoe and Sierra I made up while we were discussing names. We both liked the way it sounded. A day later I got to thinking about how, living in Southfield, there are probably ten little girls with that name running around our apartment complex.

oh well...

I used to call my cat Shiloh "Sheekers".... just because.

Our cat Peyton, my mom calls him "PP" and I call him "PeyPey". Ripley, I call him Prince Ripley because when he lays down, he sometimes props himself up on the love-seat's arm rest and places one of his paws on his hip. Cleo, I just call "Cleo-fius". Mogen = Mogey, Dakota = Koters, KC = KC Kitty

Right now I have three kitties:

Chango, named after one of the loa in the Voudun belief system... kind of a war god. Kitty was poisoned as a kitten & almost didn't make it so I gave him a name that would make him strong.

Lynx, 'cos he actually looked a bit like one when he was a catling. He's got much darker with age so it doesn't really fit now.

Tomoe, Japanese for "comma" and the name of a historical female samurai whose life was fictionalized in 3 rockin' fantasy books by Jessica Amanda Salmonson.

Their mother, who no longer lives with me, is Kitsune, a name given to Japanese trickster shapeshifter foxes. Their grandmother was named Gris-gris, a pun from French for "gray" and the name for a medicine bag or spell pouch in the Voudun religion.

My baby corn snake who escaped in mid-April and hasn't been seen since, was Orochi-ko no Mikan or "Tangerine demon-snake child".

My long-tailed grass lizards don't have names yet. And one never will since I came home today and found him dead.
