Thyroid Meds & Depression

Fierce Critter

Recommended Posts

So, for anyone out there who knows about this sort of thing, can being off your thyroid meds screw you up if you're on depression meds?

I take 85 mcgs a day of Synthroid for hypothyroidism. I've been out for about a month. I also take a generic form of Wellbutrin. I keep steady on that.

I'm having major relapse symptoms of depression right now. I wonder if it's related to being off the thyroid pills.

Have a lot of personal crap of really negative nature bringing me down overall. Maybe it's just that.

I don't have personal experience with it but I have read that being hypothyroid can absolutely cause depression. Your thyroid does a whole lot of things in your body, not something you want to have messed up for very long.

ABSOLUTLEY!!! If your thyroid is out of whack, it causes depression and can make you gain weight to the point where you cant lose it at all.

I recommend that you talk to a doctor and let him know what you are experiencing. You dont want this to get any worse.

I am talking from experience I have had problems with it before and because we are fellow DGNers, I dont want to see you any worse than you say you are now. I know that its bad and makes you feel like crap.

Good luck girl!

Thanks.

I'll be filling my 'scrip Thursday.

I'll give it a couple weeks and see if things kick back in.

Before I knew I was hypothyroid, I didn't understand why it was so hard to lose weight, why my hair wasn't growing, and why I was freaking COLD all the time.

It can be easy to think you can go off thyroid meds. You don't see or feel anything drastic - it subtly makes your body do what it's supposed to naturally.

Just very poor prioritization of money this past couple months. I'll get back on track soon, I hope.

YES.

Your thyroid being off can make you feel like total crap. It can also cause hypoglycemic tendancies, which can *definately* make you feel that much worse. Irritable, hard to concentrate, confused.

Have you talked to your doctor yet about it? I know what you're going through with regard to Hypothyroidism. I've been taking meds for it for over 25 years. I went undiagnosed with it for over 2 years before I saw a doctor about it when I was 18. I also couldn't understand why I was ALWAYS cold, tired, slow, well you get the picture. It's not fun. I spent most of my high school years sleeping, metally & physically. I have to take meds for the rest of my life because my thyroid gland was destroyed somehow. Even the doctor couldn't figure out why that was. I'll tell you one thing, being pregnant with both of my kids really screwed up my body while taking Synthroid. I also ended up passing it to my daughter. Her Hypothyroidism isn't as bad as mine(she still has her thyroid gland) she'll more than likely have to take Synthroid the rest of her life too. It was years later before I started suffering depression, but, some of that might have been from after I had a hysterectomy years ago. I hope everything is going better for ya now hon. *hugs* :flower:

I was on synthroid for like three years for the same thing and not only is it going to slow you down to be off your meds, but in certain instances it's down right dangerous. Yes it can cause not just severe depression but irratic depression (i.e. mood swings). Fill your prescription and fast!

Thanks, everyone.

I got my 'scrip filled about a week ago. I'm feeling much better.

But to be honest, the past week was Jon's vacation. We have been having a particularly good week, very little stress, lots of renewed vigor relationship-wise, just a lot of positivity.

I'm feeling really, really good overall.

I don't ordinarily lapse on ANY of my medications. But once in a while I just get super-lazy about things like paying a bill (even if there's plenty of money to do so, I might be too freaking lazy to take my ass down to the city offices and pay the electric/cable bill or sign on to sprint.com and pay the phone bill) or filling a 'scrip.

I never, ever lapse on my Wellbutrin. But the thyroid meds and allergy meds are so subtle a correction that it's easier for me to think it's not a big deal if I'm slow to refill them.

I'll try to be better in the future. :) I have a blood test pending anyway, time to check my doseages.
