This is getting me absolutely crazy.

My e-mail is getting overloaded with constant notifications that topics and forums I'm subscribed to are getting responses.

I've gone into my controls and unchecked/canceled ALL subscriptions.

My cache has been cleared. As have my cookies.

And I just responded to a poll and realized the box for notifications of responses is automatically checked.

In a last-ditch effort to fix this, I've tried setting my spam controls to just delete those messages, but it's tricky due to needing to type in phrases from the body of the e-mail. It doesn't stop everything.

Any clues what is going on here?

Yeah the wording of the email instructions on how to turn it off is crappy, and the wording of the stuff in "My Controls" is crappy too.

I manually modified it so it explained it better, but after the last update it went back to the default.

Whats happening (usually):

1. You turn off all notifications / subscrptions and you figure ok now im done and i wont get anymore right?

(this is done by going to My Controls > Email Settings > Enable 'Email Notification' by default?

and unchecking the box or changing the drop-down list. Just for people that don't know)

So you really DO have all notifications turned off "by default" but the problem is all thats really saying is "dont give me any NEW notification emails" so yeah, ok no new subscrptions to NEW topics.

But, that doesnt get rid of the EXISTING subscrptions. So you still get spammed with the existing stuff that you "auto subscribed" to prior to turning it off. For 99% of users this is a non-issue because they only posted like 5 times and so they only get a notification once in a blue moon. But for us "hardcore" users its a lot of spam.

To get rid of existing / previously subscribed stuff you have to :

My Controls > View Topics (uncheck everything)

My Controls > View Forums (uncheck everything)

So that gets rid of all the things your still subscribed to.

I'll add this to my to-do list to explain this right in the subscrption "how to unsubscribe" text (again) at some point here.

I think also the "no new subscrptions" database update only runs like once a day at midnight or something (another thing i thought i "fixed" but its a default thing that goes back to "normal" after updates)

So you might have unchecked all the topics/subscrptions but then more got added later that day as you posted.

I've gotten this question a TON of times, it is fixable through the settings in my controls but its definetaly not particularly easy or clear. Its also too complex of a coding nightmare to make it work differently so its simpler.

I made two separate test accounts after i first heard about it and forced them to "get spammed" then walked myself through "fixing" it.

First time I've ever explained it in detail like that and it hasn't fixed it. I've walked like 10 people through it over the phone or in PMs, always does get fixed, eventually.

I've covered it in detail on the admin forums to make sure i wasn't missing something. Seems to be a common "problem", supposedly the way it works will be changed in a future update to not have so many stuipd overlapping settings.

There should just be one check box or something "subscriptions off?" and that should be the end of it. Unfortunately its not grr.

The money shot is always the "subscpritons" and "topics" sections if they have anything in them, theres a setting someplace adding new stuff in there when it shouldnt be.
