know_buddy_kares
So, I tried going cold turkey, but when day 2 came around, I started chasing people around with my katana (heh, no, I just kid) but the ammounts of stress involved were unreal. I mean it's gotten really bad, I could be sitting there, withdrawls hit, and I see this empty soda bottle, and for no other reason than it's there... I'd start to get pissed off at it and frusterated with it. So since it was so hard, I'm having someone ration my smokes... it's helping a little but god this is one tough fuckin habbit to break. I woke up and grabbed a morning cigarette, and thought i was saving it until after i got a few things done first, and apparently I smoked it.. but I don't remember smoking it at all... and just the idea that there's a fresh, unsmoked cigarette laying around SOMEWHERE in this house is driving me mad. But I'm really trying to take this as best as I can for... I'm only down to like 5 a day now, and I just started this rationing idea yesterday and so far, I'm doing fine. I've made this decision, and damnit i'm not backing down, for this is my tool of motivation.. Foamy's Smoking Rant I'm not gonna loose my will power in this, but fuck the going cold turkey shit. It honestly turns me into THIS. So I wanna ask, are there any veteran smokers who have quit before? How did ya do it, and how did you manage to do it without killing stuff? Msterbeau
90 days. Make it through that and things should get much easier. Or so I've read.... Apparently that's the amount of time it takes for your body's neurological processes to reset themselves.

Geez 90 days.. it's gonna be like basic training all over again (why didn't i stay quit after i was done.. god i'm kickin myself now) meh oh well... I hear the first 3 days are the hardest... so hoping with the rationing it can ease that initial kill switch in me. so when I don't have any more, it's ok. But yeah, 90 days is quite an endurance trial.
hunhee
Yeah but nicotine only lasts in your system for 3 days.. you get past that, and there's actually NO physical need for it..the only problem is you've committed it to habbit..You have to change around your routine and do things differently in order to break the habbit.. I'm actually lucky..the only real habbit that I have is biting my finger nails.. :/
Destroit
COFFEE. Lots and lots of Folgers...oh...wait...you don't drink coffee. Damn...uhmm well GOOD LUCK..*coughyersofuckedcough* Hang in there man, if you can do boot camp kinda shit, then I'm sure you can kick the cancer habit. Here's your own cheer squad for motivation and support. If you ever need a cigarette, come back and look at these little chicks here all like "YAY! Go KBK! kellygrrrrrl
I tried cold turkey..... I was miserable for about a week....and I mean absolutely miserable.... It took about 2 weeks for it to go down from there.... I made it 7 months, had ONE smoke and the withdrawals were there all over again... so if you have just one, you will be on day one all over again. Then I tried the gum...and xanax.... It worked for about 4 months.... Then I tried Chantix .... it trix your nicotine receptors into thinking you are getting nicotine....but you aren't... then you have to wean off of the Chantix....which wasn't as hard as going cold turkey.... I'd say that is the way to go.....but it cost me $90 for the scripts.... I caved a few months later and had Just ONE again.... And here I am a smoker all over again.... So don't have just one.... go 5 more minutes.....go 10 more minutes after that....then go the rest of the day, wake up, go for 5 minutes, and go for 10 more minutes from there.... make your mind wait another 5 minutes everytime you feel yourself wanting one.... oh and your mind will rationalize with you why you SHOULD have one.....you need to know that... don't let your mind trick you like that! GOOD LUCK! I'll be getting back on that horse again soon....

But then it's notihng like AA, for I remember having one hell of a time getting started on this habit too. But I was stubborn, and kept forcing myself, and I've not lost my stubborn ways any so... Just on pure stubbornness alone, I got this. COFFEE. Lots and lots of Folgers...oh...wait...you don't drink coffee. Fierce Critter
Jon had smoked for about 9 years when I met him in '98. He quit cold-turkey that year. Through one thing or another, he started up again about a year and a half ago. He just quit again. Cold turkey. The first time he quit, he was cranky for about 2-3 days. Then - nothing. He was fine. He did have to stop drinking at the same time, though, because drinking was a MAJOR relation to his smoking that would get him wanting one again. No big loss there. :D This time, same thing - cold turkey. A couple days of crankiness, then fine. Of course, this time he was on vacation for 10 days with me, and he never could smoke around me, so he had an impetus. When he went back to work yesterday, he said the cravings were back a bit. Today, I got up and made him breakfast and a lunch to take with him with plenty of ice cold drinks like water & home made iced tea. (He hasn't been eating breakfast or lunch for some years now.) He called a little while ago and said that has realy, really helped him. One thing that happened to him both times was after a few days without cigarettes, he felt sorta light headed. This was from actually being able to breathe REAL clean air. That kinda bothered him, but he dealt with it. Good luck. Don't give up. (P.S. My dad and brother-in-law also were cold-turkey quitters. And my brother, a heavy smoker, died of cancer at 47 in '99. You can do it - don't let it beat you. You're stronger than you know.)

Kit Kat P
Oranges in the morning do the same thing to your mind that the morning cigarette does. Start running again, it helps w/ the first 3 days, just like boot camp.
diana2di
i quit for 3 years and then started back up again about a month ago... so trust me i've been there... but i had to give it up i was pregnate
know_buddy_kares
Wrong forum, foamy sucks, and lots of luck You ALWAYS tell me the wrong forum.. and I ALWAYS agree with you cept now... this is meant to be Introduce yourself here because, I'm not that full of myself to think of me as a current event, that's more of bigger issues i belive. This could however fit in other but... well... if the mods think that way strong enough to want to move it, i've no problem with it. either way, thanks for the luck, it's getting better... i had a cigarette a while ago and it actually wasn't as pleasurable.. kinda burned my throat... talk about kicking the habbit quicker by rationing.. DarkChylde
I've quitted once before when I was 20. I was doing really good for awhile but then t'ill MAJOR DEPRESSION started raining on my parade (looooong story). I started smoking again hoping one day I die from lung disease. However times were diffrent back then and I consider myself a idiot for going back to smoking for a stupid reason. I can understand its very tough, when things calm down for me im'a try quitting as well. Just hang in there and good luck man.

Morbid Side
I have absolutely no advice to give you. I know this is tough but one good thing I did notice about smoking (And believe me it's the only thing) That when you smoke, you bond with others and we stay in our smokers circle. and the non-smokers try to get in. BTW, I would love to quit myself someday.

know_buddy_kares
Well so far things have been good, i started out when i made this post cutting down from a pack a day to just 5 a day. Now I had 3 today and that's it. From here on out it's cold turkey time. As long as I keep preoccupied in things I don't have the fits. Hellion
Since we cannot go out for smoke breaks at work anymore,I have reduced my intake,Years ago I quit for a year and a half, unfortunately, when I got another job the place allowed smoking, and almost everyone smoked, did not help me,but in the near future I will have to quit it,and I basically want too after 23 years of it.Good Luck on your success. know_buddy_kares
Hey thanks for everyone's support and advice through this. I think i'm doing fairly well actually, it's been well over a week since i had a smoke. I can't give you the exact number of days for I had lost track like.. after 2 or 3 days (i tend to do that) But the cravings still hit randomly, normally when i'm bored, it goes along with hunger or thirst, so if i'm feeling those, then i start getting cravings too... Its also made me gain weight... ugh.. I got man boobs now.. what the fuck.. heh no i just kid, i only gained like 5-10 pounds, and that's accompanied with getting back up to my healthy regular weight now that I'm getting regular meals. To be back up to 180.. and now it's time to tone it up once again to stay at that weight and physical health... it feels pretty good to be able to push things around like i used to instead of not being able to budge them due to weight. And I'm not so winded like i used to be... woo.. Didn't mean to necropost, but I just wanted to bring this up since i was getting random questions, just to let everyone know incase they were curious... better to necropost this than start a new thread.
