Our S-10 Is Going To Be For Sale

Recommended Posts

Here's the sitch.

We just got a minivan. Used, but in good condition. Reliable. So we don't need the truck anymore.

We have a '99 Chevrolet S-10. We owe about $500 in late fees on it, but otherwise it's paid off. As soon as we pay off those fees, we get the title.

I'm putting out feelers to see if anyone would be interested in it. If so, consider whether you'd allow for a situation where you put up the $500 fees up front, we pay off the fees, and you pay the rest when we hand over the title.

You know me & Jon. We're good for it.

We'll be asking $2000 or best. And here is the honest truth about what's up with it.

Does it run? Yes. The engine runs great. As several mechanics/Auto Zone employees have said, "you can't kill that engine."

Do I drive it daily? Yes. We just took it up to Traverse City and back. It did great.

Would I keep driving it if we hadn't bought the minivan? Definitely.

Does it have problems? Yes.

From day 1, things fell off of it. First it was seat handles (you can't recline them unless you use viselocks or something). Then the hinge pins wore out on the driver's side door, causing the door to sag and as a result, the latch is busted. It shuts, and stays shut. But the door stays open a crack. (I replaced the hinge pins, but the damage was already done.) The door is shut. It's just oddly canted so that I had to put thick molding on top to keep it from sounding like a wind tunnel.

The armrest/handle inside the driver's side door is busted off. We pull it shut (slam it) with the door panel itself.

Right now, it has a long hesitation before kicking into gear when you take off - when the AC is on. Without the AC on, it does fine. Jon says it needs new wires & plugs, and a distributor cap. He doesn't feel like doing that right now, but he might if it means a sale.

Does it leak? No drips on the ground.

Mileage is about 153,000 or 159,000 - I forget which.

Suspension? Needs work. It doesn't do the hop hop hop thing when you drive down the road - the shocks aren't bad. But it definitely needs an alignment. And there is a decent amount of shimmy when you hit certain speeds - that could mean something as simple as a tire balancing, or something in the suspension.

The gas gauge doesn't work. When we fill the tank full, we reset the tripometer. A full tank will get you about 270 miles. We recommend filling around 220 to be sure (idling, running AC can affect it).

Front bumper has been bashed about 3 different times. It's intact, and is staying that way. But it's not pretty.

We didn't like anti lock brakes. So Jon pulled out this big fuse-looking thing to disable it. You can put it back in if you want. I grew up driving in Michigan snow, so it just hindered my talents at keeping out of a skid and recovery if I did.

Horn works - if you beat the living shit out of the steering wheel. It'll work a while, then quit again.

Would I take it up north again? Maybe by driving an hour, then resting a half hour, etc. Would I drive it around town? You betcha. Can you haul stuff in it? Darn tootin'.

What's it got:

Ice cold AC.

Cap on back - you can take it off and sell it if you don't want it on there.

Decent Sony Xplod speakers in the doors. We took our 6x9 boxes out of the back and put them in the minivan. But we're including a Sony Xplod CD player with removable face and wiring harness (I may go ahead and put it in before selling it, but I'm not buying a dash mount kit)

A decent, non-smoker interior. Needs cleaning, but it'll look nice when you're done.

3rd door for easy access to the extended cab. There's a sort of rumble seat you can pull down back there.

Tow package - full frame, not just ball-on-bumper.

Decent tires.

It's red.

That's about all I can think about, good or bad. I've tried to disclose everything I could think of. If I end up putting it on Craigslist, I'll be just as honest.

Any questions?
