Trustworthy Seamstress Needed

I have a strapless cream-colored dress that I need shortened to calf-length, then have halter straps made with the remaining fabric. The dress is currently strapless, but I have nothing to hold it up. This is a VERY important dress and it cannot be fucked up in ANY way. It will eventually need to be taken in next spring, as long as I don't gain any weight.

If anyone can advise me on who to go to for this, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to THINK that I know who to go to, but some people are better at certain things than others, so I try not to assume. I live in Royal Oak, so I'd like to go to someone close by.

I know this isn't very close to Royal Oak, but you asked for trustworthy... Sue's Alterations - They have been in business for ages. On Hayes between 18 & 19 Mile Rds in a small strip mall on the east side of the road. They do fantastic work and my mother and I have both found the price reasonable.

This is the most important dress I'll ever wear. So, it has to be done right. I can sit here and say that it'll be simple, but I don't even know how to sew. If you will ask her, I would be grateful.

I would recommend going to a bridal shop and asking them. They probably have all sorts of contacts with seamstresses and the like.

Might not be cheap, but you might be able to see examples of their work up front.

The problem with going into bridal shops is that, if you're not buying from them, they typically act like your shit stinks BAD. I asked one person, and they TRIED to make me feel like shit for not spending $1000.00 or more on a new gown. They can kiss my pasty white ass.

We can talk about the straps. I really need to see the dress construction and such to make a fair assessment. Also, if you plan to alter it when you lose weight, I would wait and do it all at once, because strap placement and legnth will change too.n Depending on how the top is cut, I may be able to takie a pattern of a similar ahape that has halter straps and make them work on this dress. Hmmm... Will think on this.

The above pic is pretty accurate as to the cut of the dress. It's a just very simplestrapless. I just have nothing to hold a strapless dress up, making the idea of halter straps a really good one....

Is it lined? Does it have boning / built in cups / something else to mess me up? If it is lined, it there a seam along the top edge of the dress? (If so we're golden. )

I don't know if I'd call it lined. The boning is in the bodice, and it's flexible. I appears to have built in cups. There also appears to be a seam along the top edge of the dress. It zips in the back.

I want it to be shortened to mid-calf. I figured that the remainder of the fabric could be used to make halter straps. I had considered buying some matching tulle and making the halter out of that, but I'm not the one doing it. Or, buying the matching tulle and wearing it around my waist as a sash....

LOL Cocktails and decency = important. I think I can help you out. It shouldn't be too hard, especially if you have multiple ideas! I also should be able to fit / tailor it for you.
