Can Anyone Give Me The Lowdown On Mephistos?

Can anyone give me the scoop on Mephistos?

What is it like? How does it compare to CityClub?

People? Music?

Thanks.

B. Hood

I can't really give you the low down, seeing as I have never been there, but Scary guy could tell you about it, if he is so inclined. I don't know if he is still dj-ing there, but he would know the ins and outs.

I'm generally the person who is all for City Club - warts and all - and doesn't like Mephistos.

I gave my reasons why I like CC in another thread on here. Here's what I don't like about Mephisto's, and why I choose not to go there.

Yes, it is clean. Yes, the bathrooms are nice. I think the drinks may be cheaper than at CC, but I didn't buy anything but pop there so I can't say for sure. I know the pop was cheaper than at CC.

I don't like it because it's small relative to CC - particularly in the area of dance floor.

I think the cover charge is something like $6, but I'm not sure. When two people on a tight entertainment budget have to shell out a total of $12.00 just to get in a place, that makes me bristle. People laud the cover charge as keeping drink prices low. Meh. What if I don't drink, either? Doesn't benefit me all that much.

I didn't like that there was "goth stuff" happening on the main floor, and then upstairs, there was "non goth" stuff happening like some kind of hard rock band.

This bothered me because on the first floor, I felt comfortable and somewhat in my "element". But when I went upstairs, the usual stares and unspoken "what a freak" atmosphere was fully evident from the non-"goth" patrons there to see hard rock.

The third floor with the sitting area and outdoor balcony was cool. I did like that very much. But I didn't like having to go through 2nd floor and "judgment vision" to get there.

I felt the atmosphere was contrived. I've tried several places that aren't full-time "alternative" such as CC, and all of them gave me the same feeling of, "let's throw the gothies a bone and get their $$ for a 4-6 hour night." For instance, I've never really seen cage dancers as remotely "alternative".

Some people like the more intimate atmosphere from a smaller place like that. I do, too - and when I do, I go to a coffee house and sit on a couch and listen to quietly played acoustic music. Not to a "nightclub".

No thanks. It's nice, for sure. But I found it overall cold & sterile in the worst way. I'd rather go to CC and watch what I touch & where I sit.

It's a cute place, nice atmosphere, but very tiny. The first time I went I described it as looking like someone's really cool house party. I always have a hard time finding it. If I lived down the street I'd probably be there all the time, but to drive all the way out there and have no space to dance seems silly. I'd go for a special event but not on a regular basis.

As someone who worked there for four years, still goes regularly, and is good friends with the owner I can say that the club is awesome. It does have its bad points too but I believe the pros actually outweigh the cons by a huge percentage.

Unfortunately the club is now strictly 21+ (and is now actually being enforced). I've got a few friends who are going to have to wait a few years to get in because of that. If it was 18+ insurance would cost A LOT more (a full grand year I believe). FC the reason cover was so much is to cover the entertainment. Also a higher cover for those that don't drink (the 18-20 crowd) is to make sure they make something off of them (which I don't get because I think they make more on a coke, but it's not like it matters now). Normal cover for a normal night is usually $3.00 and won't go up at 12:00. Plus if you go often enough they might just let you in free (which city club hasn't done `till recently because they're hurting for customers).

The DJs are alright though they don't mix, but no one these days even attempts to though except for maybe Rohn and Saint (I also wouldn't call that attempting. More like succeeding). The speakers sound good, but they used to sound a lot better. I personally picked out and set up the new DJ system on the first floor of the place. But DJs get drunk and don't know how to work the air traffic control system... i mean DJ rig and that's how speakers and amps blow up. But I go in and do routine maintenance (still) and when I'm there point out to the DJs when they should adjust things if it's not obvious to them at that moment. They are good on the song selection and that's mostly what I worry about. Also when I say good, I mean they don't play the obscure shit I'd be playing :)

The drinks are reasonably priced, but I don't drink anything except coke, and I get all those free since I maintain the website and help out. Also on occasion, if I want a pizza they'll hook me up with one of those too. Speaking of if you want pizza, Amiccis up the street does some good cheap quality. You can even have it delivered and either give the doorman the cash or they'll just find you if you let them know you ordered one. 313-875-1992 (I know this number by heart).

The club isn't completely goth/industrial. They do alternative and some top/40 and very rarely hip hop (the DJs usually get a clue when the entire bar bitches at them over it). They also do different things on different nights (Tuesdays: GLBT night with a LARP on the second floor, Wednesdays: the "goth" night with movies on the third floor, Thursdays: Retro night, Fridays: Top 40/alternative/goth/industrial, Saturdays: "Big Sonic Heaven" type stuff, but still dancable and fun to listen to) and sometimes have live bands and other things going on. Even art gallery showings and sometimes vendors selling goods (like leather crafts at the fetish shows, etc...)

It is CLEAN. The owner is a hypochondriac and I like that. The main stuff is cleaned nightly or the very next day and the major stuff gets cleaned every week (wiping out coolers, cleaning shelves, etc...) I will say they do need to dust more in certain areas but you could eat off the floor if you really wanted to. Most people will even clean up after themselves which makes things a lot easier. They do need to put out more trashcans though but there are ashtrays EVERYWHERE.

The dance-floors are small, but not many see it as a dance club. It's more of a social gathering "lounge" type thing. I have seen the floors get packed by 10-15 people on each level. Also if you don't like the music on one floor, just go to the other one. There is also a bar on each level (and even one outside sometimes).

Finally I'll add that yes, the owner does want to make a profit. But he likes to eat and pay his bills too. Most of what he makes goes back into the club. He genuinely LIKES the different people who come in and patronize his establishment (and sometimes him as well heh). He takes an interest in their lives and if they're having a good time or not. The staff are as friendly as he is. They won't yell at you like a peon, instead they'll talk to you and if there's a problem try to work it out with you.

Also FC again most of the people are cool with you if you're cool with them. I get stared at a lot myself but I've never been one to care what others think, so it doesn't effect me as much I guess. But even if I did have a problem the staff would probably back me before them anyhow.

If anyone has any other questions about anything feel free to contact me.

I back up Scary Guy's assessment 100%! The only thing I don't like is the few times I've been able to go lately (Friday nights) the place has been dead. Only the first floor was open and I actually had room to walk.

Agreed. I have a tendency to like a bustling atmosphere, and Mephisto's just doesn't deliver. Saturdays are ususally decent, but aren't anywhere near as cost effective as City, especially when you consider City Club is open until 4:30.

Haha, what a story.

I don't care for it as much. I was able to go about a year ago.. because of a friend connection.

I didn't take much liking to it. I need a big dance floor. The people are at least nice though.

    • ~~~~~ Yeah, thank you for the check-in.   Happy to say it was all a misunderstanding.  But she pulled out her "ghetto" and that's when things went South.  I get very professional minded when I enter into situations like that because when someone starts bring the court into conversations, I'm in court 2 times a year, every year, so don't go there with me because I will get legal all over you.   She did try to change what she thought she might have said, but I had to call her on it because it's all in written text.  Then she apologized and we were able to have a decent conversation.   I know I joke about me talking so much that people don't hear what I say except for keywords that they are looking for, but that is exactly what happened here.  She heard "payment", "money" and "help out".  It was crazy.  I literally had to have the entire conversation all over again, but I definitely condensed it to only address those 3 words.   Things are back on track, but I emphasized that if she every needed clarification for anything, please say something first instead of jumping to conclusions, then questioning that conclusion, then answering that conclusion, then getting upset at the answer and taking it out on someone who doesn't have a clue what the San Juan Hill just happened.   But this is exactly the reason I do everything with a paper trail.

    • I'm glad  that yesterday's day at work is long gone now. There was a very strong unusual energy that I felt, and couldn't get done with the day fast enough. It wasn't  the job at all. I just felt like I really needed to keep my mouth shut, to keep me from getting in situation(s) that probably wouldn't have ended well for me.
    • You can trust anyone you want.  The only question is whether or not they're deserving of that trust. No risk = no reward.  As such you have to let yourself be vulnerable sometimes and realize that all people will let you down eventually whether it's intentional or not.  The frequency that it happens is what's important.
    • Sorry, I don't check this as often as I should. Anyway document everything (although it sounds like @Trene4000already has been from her post.) It's okay to cry and break down, but not in front of them.  Never give them the satisfaction of seeing you crack.  If anything I'd go out of my way to piss them off, but I don't like being that guy either (and as such I'm not very good at it, except sometimes when I'm not intending to be.) I try to only help those whom deserve it, but that's often hard to judge.  Seeing how someone treats other people is a pretty good indicator of whether or not they're worthy.  Sociopathic narcissistic asshats are very much not worthy. I hope things are going well for you guys.
