This is just what came to mind, this isn't really my answer.

My answer to your question is boredom and propaganda. Our lives suck and most don't have an original thought in their entire brain. This is why media exists, to entertain us, which is great to a point. Sports stars and celebrities are nothing more than just athletes and actors that get paid WAY too much. Granted it's not easy being famous as you're trapped in your own house and can't leave without a hired goon watching your back with tabloids and media scrutinizing your every move. These people are famous because they are seen everywhere in media, and people develop one-sided connections with them and then have a vested interest. So the marketing geniuses use this to their advantage and everyone makes money off of it. They sell their fame to the team/studio/whoever will buy it. Some of the power is used for political reasons and to further their own agendas. or just to do all the drugs they can before their bodies give out/they go to jail for a long time. Granted there are some damned interesting stories out there.

These days anything anyone does is either a crazy publicity stunt or is a carefully planned out for months in front of a controlled focus group crazy publicity stunt. A good example of that is the Paris Hilton porn. She knew what the fuck she was doing because most people wouldn't know who her or her sister were otherwise and "oops" it just leaked out.

OJ, Lindsy Lohan, Paris Hilton, Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears

These are all made famous by the media to distract you from your actual meaningless lives, problems, and doing anything about them/being really productive. Because sheep are easier to control, we are sheeple to them. Find me America on a map with no lines. Read a book that isn't fucking Harry Potter. Stop using windows or at least take the time to make it a secure operating system (or rather as secure as you can). Finally put your hat on right and pull up your fucking pants.
