Blaqk Audio, 9/16/07 St. Andrews Hall

This was my first show at St. Andrews, and I'll definately be going back. This is a great place to see shows, not a bad view from any place in the house. The sound was excellent, as well.

Blaqk Audio has turned out to be a nice little project for Davey Havok and Jade Puget. They were also perfect for this kind of venue. The night began with DJ Pleasure Kitten, who played a great set of songs I've honestly not heard in a long time. I just thought a DJ was a very different choice to open the show with, and the crowd there unfortunately didnt seem very interested in dancing. She was on from 7 til 8:45.

As soon as Blaqk Audio hit the stage, Davey kept things moving at a frantic pace up to the end of the show. Honestly, this man has some ENERGY. (Aside from only being able to draw from one album's worth of material, and dealing with Sunday noise ordinances, I almost wonder if his immanent collapse at the end is what kept the set shorter!)

The stage was set with synthesizers, microphones, some racks of equipment, and an apple laptop. A projected light and image show which spilled liberally out into the crowd gave an atmosphere of being inside a music video. The set was filled with trademark Davey "Oh!"s, a lot of frenetic antics, and the occasional posing for the screaming ladies at the foot of the stage.

Oh, who am I kidding, it was more than occasional. :p

The man has some stage presence.

This seems to be the season of equipment issues. Through the first few songs, there were problems with Davey's in-ears. Eventually, after brushing the wires out of his way for the millionth time, he said something like "These in-ears... can you guys hear me ok? Do I sound alright?" After the screaming audience reply, he said "Fuck it!" and ripped them out. Apart from a few really pitchy spots, he did damn well for not being able to hear himself. :) And of course, the showmanship made up for any small but enthusiastically belted pitchiness.

They also did a cover of Blur's Girls & Boys. Those boys..... like their boys and girls. ;)

Overall, it was a very well put together set. It was just too short. The concert ended at 9:45. They also commited a nasty concert sin. They ended the show with no encore!

Also..... someone thought it was funny to bring the house lights up to country music (which got turned up louder when fans started chanting for Blaqk Audio to come back out). Bad joke.....

The concert rocked! One of the best I've been to... The energy level was electrifying. I'm a little bitter, I didn't get my front and center guard rail spot but front row and a bit to the left rocked my 20 eyeDocs. As for the opening DJ... Umm yeah I dug the songs she had going but they were more like ummm songs I would listen to at home. Not go out dancing to.. Plus she didn't do anything except for sit on the floor and thumb through her CD most the time. I'm not talking smack by any means. Really I did love her choice in music but, opening up for some one like Blaqk Audio, which you know is going to be high energy.... Hmmmmm...

As for the no encore thing.. I think it's more cause they performed all of there songs. You have to remember they only have the one CD out and 2 bonus songs.

None the less I got great front row pics and vids, I'll prolly be loading to my myspace hopefully tomorrow. Even got to chat it up with Smith a bit and got Davey and Smith to sign my jacket. Whoot whoot... lol Cut me a break I've been a fan of AFI since the mid 90's... :p

P.S Eeeeps I was prolly one of those screaming girls at the front stage..{Lowers head in shame} It's just so easy to get taken up in all the energy flowing around you and through you, to lose yourself!

I Had a blast, the sound was great, the view was great, I laughed at the the 89x poser kids who only knew 2 songs, I danced... I also thoe was dissapointed on the no encore part. and the sea of cell phones was amusing also... back in the day we had lighters... now all you see is cell phones.....

the DJ was good played lots of old stuff, just not enough umpffff for me thoe....

not bad for, according to them, their "8th show ever".

only a couple problems i saw:

1. do an encore. i know they do a depeche mode cover, so they should have done that +stiff kittens for the encore.

2. a little short. not bad,but yeah...do a couple more covers to fill out the set.

Nope..... they missed one of the songs I wanted to hear: "Fear of Being Found". Heh. They played one of the bonus tracks ("Boys and Girls"), but there were 2 more, and 2 B-Sides. So no lack of material. Maybe they had to carry Davey out after the hour show in that black suit, though? Heh.....

Why front row is so important to me.. *Laughs* Got a few pics on myspace from the concert if anyone wanted to check them out. www.myspace.com/pinkstarlights and my friend Jean the number 2 on my top friends list uploaded some of her pics and a video clip. But she was a bit farther to the corner than I was, so hers’ are a bit farther away. None the less I'd load some vid footage but before you know it every other 12 year old on photobucket from Nebraska or something would have it floating around.. lol Course some one somewhere is probably saying that about the Elliott Smith vid I snagged... :X
