Movies That More People Should See....

battle royale is banned there. WTF???

It's not banned, there's a problem with licensing.

I picked up 1 & 2 at a comic convention a few years ago, and they're not bootlegged, just 'imported'. You can also get it from Netflix.

Oh, and don't bother wasting the money on part 2. The only thing that made that purchase worthwhile was in the special features. There's a commercial for BR2 that was for the Christmas season. Funny stuff right there. br2.gif

i actually found the second to be very good. people moan about it all the time because it was very differant from the first (yet logical progression, while taking an honest view of how the world sees US foregn policy "spit dummy and throw missiles out of the param at the problem"). if it had been the same people would be moaning that it was more of the same

It really depends on the type of movie-mood I'm in. For example, I just saw "Shoot 'em Up." It delivered exactly what it promised, which is basically an art film with guns. They outdid John Woo in terms of ridiculous gunplay and stunts, and they got a comic to play an over-the-top bad guy, which he did *really* well. It's not "Hamlet," but then, it's not supposed to be.

If you're looking for something cool and dark, I recommend "The Razor's Edge" with Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney. Made in 1946, it's probably one of the few American movies that recognized anything outside Christianity as being valid.

BASIC was really good. Great twists and turns in the plot right up to the end.

Another one I really liked, but don't come across many who've seen it, is Identity with John Cusak and Ray Liotta.

I also liked Identity but whenever I ask people about it they seem interested but they havent seen it.

Even though the anti-US sentiment seemed very forced, and didn't really seem to add or subtract anything from the movie, that wasn't even the problem with it. The plot itself was terrible, and a lot of the little points made no sense.

Dude....am I the only one that thinks Party Monster is the most fabulous movie...EVER? Maybe it's my love for glamour, maybe I'm shallow, MAYBE it's because I adore gay guys. Either way, it's a very epic and well narrated movie that is based on an autobiography (not full, partial AB) by my one and only true idol James St. James (well....not one and only but you know what I mean). It's the true story of club life in NYC through the 80's - 90's as seen though the eyes and words of James St. James regarding real-life out of control club kid, Michael Alig (played by Mackauley Caulkin, J.S.J. is played by Seth Green) and his downfall which ultimately leads to the murder of another drug dealer club kid, Angel Menedez. It's worth it because it's true. Also it has Marilyn Manson as a super awesome drag queen named Christina.

We should so have a movie party you guys :-P

For some reason nobody ever knows about it, it came out in 2003. My ex-friend Rachel had to tell me about and I said I never heard of it and she goes "omfg....YOU'LL love it, it's totally you" and she was right, I've probably watched it about 40 times

OK here we go, and I'm not limiting myself to movies either.

While the above list is alright, my list is better.

Informational:

America: Freedom to Fascism

American Investigative Reports (AIR)

An Inconvenient Truth

Bowling for Columbine

The Century of the Self (documentary)

Fahrenheit 9/11

The Power of Nightmares (documentary)

Sicko

Generally good viewpoints or things that make you think:

1984

American History X

Falling Down

Fight Club

Idiocracy

Soylent Green

Things to Come

Maybe someone should start a new thread for movies that changed you as a person. Not just ones you thought were "neat".

Didn't see that list coming /sarcasm/

Unfortunately, the only movie by Moore that is not filled with vague, and TREMENDOUSLY misleading statements is Sicko. His finest film to date. Faren9/11 is such a fucking joke, posting it as a 'fav' is discrediting you even more. I am beginning to see why the DCC.com people laughed at you so much.

And 'An Incon Truth'. While I agree that pollution is never a good thing and it is obviously hazardous to our environment, the film is so inconsistent with what scientists are actually saying, misleading with its scare tactics, and also strange because it's author was just seen flying in the most polluting private jet available.

But the rest of your list, good stuff.

Add:

We Were Soldiers

Forrest Gump

Saving Private Ryan

Anything With Tom Hanks

Anything With Denzel Washington

Machine, WTF?

Can we not completely flame each other?

I've gotten close to doing that because I've felt people have come off rude at times, but to just make personal attacks simply because your political views conflict with their movie tastes??

And let's try to be respectful too, Falstaff.

You hate some of these movies, fine.

But dont make others feel stupid for liking them.

I havent even seen them and Im bothered.

ANYWAY, one thing I've learned is,

if you're progressive you love Michael Moore,

if you're liberal you're uncomfortable and conflicted by him yet secretly like what hes doing,

if youre moderate you dislike him for his tactics and feel much of what he does is questionable yet are intrigued by him,

if you're apolitical you dont get involved in dumb threads about him and just find him entertaining (hence the neverending box office receipts for his films)

and if youre conservative, you cant wait to rip on him,

because he is the devil incarnate and an embarrassment to all society and mankind and the history of the world.

What that tells me is, he's more than a little threatening, because if he wasn't, no one would give a shit about him.

I enjoy that Moore makes very strong accusations at extremely powerful people, and they usually get him on him getting a date wrong or doing things for dramatic effect. Thats like running over an old lady at 70 mph and getting nailed with a speeding ticket.

Here's one thing you can't dispute, his films are big draws. He holds the 1,3, AND 5 highest grossing documentaries of all time with Sicko recently leaping ahead of ANOTHER doc with a liberal slant "An Inconvenient Truth."

Meanwhile, somewhere in the MI thumb, the last known copy of "Farenhype 9/11" is sitting in a conservative's basement collecting dust.

Anyway, if I had to get offended at Scary Guy's list it would be for Moore's overwhelming popularity.

Farenheit 9/11 grossed over $120 million stateside, which is nearly double the #2 grossing doc March of The Penguins,

over $220 million worldwide,

and was named People's Choice for Favorite Motion Picture, a feat likely never to be repeated by a documentary,

so it's my assertion that quite enough people have seen it and will continue to see it.

What I love is the backstory to its distribution. Disney was so nervous, they dropped it after pumping $6 million ito get it made. Then Miramax got other distributers/backers, paid Disney its $6 million, and laughed and laughed as everbody and their grandmother went to see it.

Michael Moore is HUGELY popular and will have more influence than a zillion of us put together.

HW, the reason why he wont fade like OJ, quite possibly the oddest association Ive read in awhile, is"

1. He didnt allegedy murder his wife in cold blood.

2. He was, is, and will continue to have a loyal following of millions worldwide.

I was going to list movies I think you all should see but Ive said enough for now.

OK I have to pick something:

Here's a documentary one should only find offensive due to the atrocities it describes.

Night and Fog- The first doc to be made about the Holocaust

It was done only 10 years after the horrors of the concentration camps, while the world was still in denial about what really happened.

It's only a half hour.

It's mostly just still photos with nice music and narration.

But the narrator goes deeper than mere descriptives.

He prods you to question humanity,

as you look at these horrific photos, taken at the time of the camp's liberation,

of 50 lb men and rooms filled with human hair, that were shaven off of mothers and fathers and children before they were sent to the gas chambers to die.

Although it has no gratuitous violence or nudity, and could probably get a PG rating, it contains some of the most disturbing footage I'll ever see.

You know, I was beginning to think I flame people (like scaryguy) too much...

Do you mean you flame me too much or that I flame other people too much? I really haven't heard much from you and I don't really think I give out much either.

Or do you mean you flame people (who are) like me too much. I don't think the eternal (or anyone else for that matter) really wants to be compared to me.

That is EXACTLY how I feel about the movie Velvet Goldmine, which is *loooooosely* based around the career of david bowie, and his relationships, including one with a character who is *loooooooooosely* based on iggy pop.

Anway, it's really a shitty movie, as plots go, but it's gorgeous, and bubbly, and fabulous, and if you haven't seen it you, yes you, especially you, chernobyl, you should.

Plus it's got Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ewan McGregor, and Christian Bale in it, all delightly young and faggy.

Plus, the soundtrack is pretty great.

Um... oh yeah, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which is one of my top five favorite movies ever, and is actually interesting, and poignant, and full of serious win. Yay drag queens.

:sorcerer:

Okay, and now back to your non-glammy non-faggy program.

First time I saw Hedwig was live at some dive in Detroit. It was a good show nonetheless. Good company, too, as I recall.

I think he means he's been flaming people too much.

Hey, I call it as I see 'em.

I will defend anyone, if I feel they were wronged.

Or give big up  to someone I flamed yesterday if its deserving.

You're right, SG I dont want to be compared to you. You know waaay too much about music. I wouldnt know how to answer half of peoples questions if they thought I was you.

Besides, we piss people off for different reasons and in different ways.

I'd like to keep others hatred and annoyance at us separate, so it doesnt overwhelm anyone.

Oh, no you di'int, sister.

Back to your non-glammy non faggy program?

You think jus' cos' you got your movie out, you can put those 14" stilettos of cinema away that easy??

Nuh uh.

You just got my beehive in a tether.

Look, girlfriend, you want to bring it, let's bring it.

Velvet Goldmine, good, Party Monster, good, but if you want a glam fag movie that ends all others earning

three snaps in a circle, with a moccachino twist, it would have to be,

Priscilla-AliceSpringsShowL.png

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

This movie is HILARIOUS!

I would rank it as one of my favorite comedies.

Nothing against the other two, their good movies, but if you're going to dress up and look silly, you may as well be laughing the whole time.

And I DEFINITELY think more people should watch this movie, especially on this board.

We need more reasons to smile.

I first saw Priscilla before the Matrix. Had no clue who the main character was. Then, I saw it again a couple of years after I watched The Matrix. Holy crap, THAT is Hugo Weaving? And then I proceeded to nearly die laughing. Because Hugo is awesome.

Has anyone ever seen The Doom Generation? Either you love it or you hate it...I thought it was funny, yet highly disturbing. It has Rose McGowan in it and that one kid from Donnie Darko (the kid that plays Frank, not Donnie). I also love how Skinny Puppy is in it...ten bonus points to whomever can tell me which scene *coughPheecough*
