So, Who's Going To Dye My Hair For Me?

Recommended Posts

I think I'm ready to take the plunge. But I'm looking to do it Friday or before Saturday afternoon.

I want to go all over black and red. I have some samples of what I'm looking for.

I want to do permanent dyes. I'm hoping to find someone who knows her way around this stuff in order to give me reds that are going to be as bright and long-lasting as I can achieve.

I'm also wondering if we have to use semi-perm for the red, and permanent for the black, can I then as it fades just apply the semi-perm to pretty much my entire noggin for refreshing and not have it affect the darker black adversely?

I do expect to pay for the service. But I can't afford to go to a salon, otherwise I'd go to London Calling or someplace like that. So we'll have to discuss $$, or maybe I got something to barter (27" TV, Surround Sound DVD player, etc)

If you browse the pics in the "red" section on this page: Bee Unique's Reds, the red I like best is the Special Effects Nuclear red. I don't know anything about Special Effects, but I'm not saying that has to be used - that's just the color I'm going for. And a nice, shiny black, not too blue.

Here's an idea of the style I'm looking for:

Basically a chunky, shaggy mix of black & red.

I can have someone over here to do it, if you don't mind cats. Or I can come your way.

I know the time is a crunch, but I want to strike while the mood is right.

By the way, we're not bleaching my hair first. My hair is a natural level 7 blonde. I know this means the red will be darker than shown in the pics, that's o.k.

Addendum: I will pick up the dyes and other necessary products, just tell me what to get. I usually pick stuff up at Sally's. Let me know what size rubber gloves. I also have my own mixing bowl, but I think I need to buy new applicator brushes.

I've been doing a ton of reading tonight to see what reviews the semi-perms get. I'm a little surprised to see the one I used to use - Jerome Russel Punky Color - gets fantastic reviews, and is even recommended by some professionals. Before I read those reviews, i was going to go with Special Effects, but I think I'm going to reconsider.

By the way, this is what Punky Color Vermilion looks like on my hair:

That was an application on untreated, unbleached hair, left on for 60 minutes under a processing cap, with a one of those old-fashioned hair dryers that has a bonnet you drawstring onto your head. My question is, how to carefully process it when part of it is going to be permanent black?

I've read some people leave the Punky Color on for hours, even a day. Hmmm...

I can't help you with dying it ... but I used this:

On line 7 in Intense Red (Of course the swatch really doesn't show, but they have real swatches at Sally's that are more correct), over my bleached hair.

It turned out like this:

And stayed that way using John Frieda colour glaze for a few months. It would start to fade orange and then I started using Loreal's Colour Pulse wash in colour in their bright red. It still looks like I coloured it with the Ion when I keep it up.

Ion is pretty cheap. Like $6.00 all together to do my hair including developer and the colour.

Manic Panic dyes seem to work really well, too. You leave those on extra long, and the colors come out really bold. I'm thinking the Pillarbox Red might be what you're looking for. They have Manic Panic dyes at Sally's, too. To do mine, all I did was two chunks in front and the entire underside in color (mine's purple), and the rest in black. I sectioned off the parts I wanted black, was super careful to get the black only on those parts, and washed the dye out when I was supposed to. Then I went back and put the purple liberally over the remaining pieces that werent black (since the black conveniently isnt going to take the purple color), and left it on for about an hour. I'd probably leave the red on for an hour and a half. The black only took about 30 minutes, with a 20 creme developer. You might not be stripping another color off, but as far as I know, for the permanent color (the black), you still need *some* kind of developer. Then, when the Manic Panic fades, just freshen it up. Fortunately, the Manic Panic is relatively cheap. For the black, I used Wella Color Charm Creme color, in black, and the sally's 20 volume creme developer. I'd offer to help, but I'm afraid if it was anything as complicated as chunks, I'd be too afraid to mess it up....

I have to disagree on the Manic Panic. It's not very good when it comes to lasting. Special Effects is REALLY long-lasting. I did Sierra's hair black and (Blood) red, and it turned out pretty cute. I'm just not even available till Sunday after the Autism Walk. But, here's a pic of Sierra so that you can see....

I swear by it. Instead of leaving it in for 15 minutes, I like to leave it in for more like 30 to 45 minutes. It's a vegetable dye, so it's safe to do so.

I also swear by Purology's Nanoworks shampoo and conditioner. It's pricey, but it makes the Special Effects last even longer while practically eliminating the damage that we do to our hair by bleaching or coloring it. There is NO reason why we can't have fun with our hair and NOT have it feel like a horse's ass.
