My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult

Chicago's My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult specialize in mixing tales of sex, Satan, and gore with a rock/dance beat. Originally formed in 1987 by Buzz McCoy (who had recently relocated from Boston) and Groovie Mann, the duo sought to create a worthy musical accompaniment that could be used as a soundtrack to trashy B-movies. The duo's initial project was to make a movie (in the style of Russ Meyer and John Waters) to be named "My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult." The movie never got off the ground, but McCoy and Mann used the aborted movie's title for the name of their just-formed group, as their over-the-top stage show was best described as "sensory overload" (featuring a revolving door of weird characters, props, and intense visuals). Signing on with Chicago's renowned industrial dance label Wax Trax!, the Thrill Kill Kult issued several releases between 1989 and 1991: a self-titled EP, plus the full-lengths I See Good Spirits and I See Bad Spirits, Kooler Than Jesus, Confessions of a Knife, and Sexplosion!

By this time, the group had attracted the attention of Interscope Records, which signed up the Thrill Kill Kult and reissued Sexplosion!, which had spawned perhaps the group's best-known song, "Sex on Wheelz" (the track would also be featured in director Ralph Bakshi's animated movie Cool World). The group only issued one more release for Interscope, 1994's 13 Above the Night, before switching to the Rykodisc label and issuing such further releases as 1995's Hit & Run Holiday (a concept album of sorts, which told the tale of a "rebellious vixen," Krystal Starlust, and her "fatal attraction" to a drifter named Apollo) and 1997's Crime for All Seasons.

The Thrill Kill Kult failed to issue any new studio recordings from 1998 through 2000, while a collection of 18 remixes, Dirty Little Secrets, saw the light of day in 1999. But, by 2001, the band had reappeared once more, issuing 2001's The Reincarnation of Luna and 2002's Golden Pillz: The Luna Remixes for yet another new record label, Invisible. In 2004 the Ryko label acquired most of Wax Trax!'s releases, including early albums from the Kult. That same year they reissued the band's first three albums and released a new compilation, The Best of TKK, along with a set of remixes named Diamonds & Daggerz. An album dedicated to the disco era that had sat on the shelves for a decade finally saw the light of day in 2005 when Gay, Black & Married hit the shelves. Two years later the lounge-styled Filthiest Show in Town appeared.

In addition to their own releases, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult has contributed tracks to several movie soundtracks, including Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls, Greg Araki's Nowhere, and the hit flick The Crow (in the latter of which the group made a cameo appearance); and over the years, has toured with such renowned (and similarly styled) bands as Siouxie and the Banshees, Lords of Acid, EMF, and Marilyn Manson.

HEAR: My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult Music

HafLife

For well over ten years, both separately and together, the musicians of HafLife have been bringing their unique sense of musical style to the masses in Detroit and throughout the Midwest. Its been said you cant survive in Detroit unless youre straight-up rock & roll or techno, but we asked, why create loud music if it isnt fun and if you cant shake your ass? So in 2000 HafLife came to be to create a new direction in sound through the exploitation of the roots of music, to fuse classic styles in new ways, to recreate the primal and reinvent the beat, and most importantly, to bring the fun back in to live performances. Fed up with boring bands who ignore their audiences, HafLife strive for the maximum audience participation level allowed by law. They dont just play music, they entertain, and thats not something many musicians do anymore, unless theyre Vegas lounge acts, which, incidentally, HafLife have been compared to. Coined everything from Industrial Hip-Hop to electro-funk, HafLife combines the best elements of rock, funk, electronics, industrial, punk, and hip-hop to form an entirely new genre of music - Bootycore. Embraced by both the rock and electronic scenes, HafLife have created a unique sound and stage presence that crosses all genres.

YES! I missed their last show at the magic stick because the night before I fell off of my ex-Pookie's sister's icy front porch and right on my kidney, so yeah, I was in a whole lot of pain by the time the concert came around so I couldn't go. I'll try to be there this time :)

I gave up on this band long ago. To disco sounding for my taste.

But the disco flavor it what makes them so fun! I've always really enjoyed the Vegas lounge-lizard/industrial combination of sound that they excel at.

The big question for Timekiller I have:

Are they more than a 2 1/2-3 1/2 person show these days?

Been to a hell of a lot of their live shows in the area over the last 12 years and it seems that their band has slowly been whittled down every tour - attrition in motion.

I already asked Tara if she wants to go to this yesterday. Not sure if we're gonna go. Shes the only that makes the big money so she takes me out, cuz I don't have alot of money. So its up to Tara if I'm going. I seen Thrill Kill Cult b4 at Pine Knob with Marilyn Manson. Only people that watched thrill kill cult was some goths in the front row with me. I had front row tickets to manson and it ruled. Thats when he knew how to put on a show. I went with my ex-wife.

Not sure how many people are on stage now, I haven't seen them in a long time. I think there's 4 in the band now.

I want to go see them too. Probably alone, no posse lol I like to have freedom to leave when I want and not be responsible for rides unless someone really needs it.

Could you please give this thread a bump a couple weeks before to remind us? Thanks.

The disco flavor sounds nice, coarse I used to rollor skate (not blade lol) to the BeeGees so dont mind me.

And, $$ how much is Dunkin Donuts paying now? Is it that good?

Tash needs to get out of chuck e cheese

DAMN! Missed them again, I didn't even see this post until the night of. How was it? The last time I was going to see them was in March a few years ago, but I fell off my friend's icy porch the night before and fucked my back up real bad.
