It's all over black, which I had done at a salon. She left strategic pieces undyed, which I then dyed myself using Special Effects Nuclear Red. Since my hair was left my natural dark blonde, and not bleached, it dyed a nice dark vermilion shade.

I flatironed it and used a VERY wide-toothed, wide-spaced comb for just a touch of backcombing.

I think I need to go back and have a little bit more cut, at least to nip off frizzy split ends. I'm thinking of maybe seeing if she can cut in some obvious stepped layers - not so shaggy, more defined?

Honest opinions here, especially styling tips/suggestions and also make-up. I realized the other day it required darker eye makeup than I usually wear day-to-day. So I put some kohl eyeliner on, used black instead of brown to fill in eyebrows. But I think it's still somewhat off. Of course, that's a very bright camera flash in a very tiny room.

I also purchased some hair extensions that are a perfect match for the black & red I've got. I'm going to sew them onto clips to throw in when I feel like it. Probably wear it all to CC next time I go (hopefully tomorrow).

Badass...I actually think that's color that my hair is right now (the red), in my never-ending quest to stop growing nasty blonde hair. Blech...I hate my blonde, well blonde in general, but especially mine.

Your hair is rockin' though

SQUEEE!!! <-- does a happy, clappy dance

THANKS EVERYBODY!!!!

I'm so glad I went through with it.

Saechalyn, I have always been happy with my natural blonde. Since I've been hermiting due to depression, it has darkened because I don't get much sun anymore. But I still was always fine with being blonde. Even though I have always had a foot in the punk/alternative look since, well, damn, since 6th grade, I've never wanted to fully eliminate the blonde.

But I've been so down about my appearance lately. You've seen all the whiny, mopey posts I've been making about "my fucking hair, wah wah". It was time for something drastic to kick things up a notch.

I've always wanted red in my hair. I've considered just red streaks. I've done the red underlayer. I tried red on top, which was a horrible fiasco. I've considered and tried a minimal of red and black layering, still blonde on top.

It was time to go all the way. And I'm so happy I did. :D

I was in a beauty supply browsing weaving tresses last Friday. And found a VERY flame red mixed with black swatch in a bargain bin. And I looked at myself in a mirror in a well-lit store, and realized how freaking drab my hair is looking. And I called Jon. And asked him, "what would you think about me just going ahead with the black and red hair?" His response, "I think it would be sexy."

SOLD. I went and had it done that day.

Today is the first day I took the time to style it. And I am a very happy girl. :)

As to the make-up, one thing I realized is the reds I wear have to be full-on reds. No more wine/berry colors, they clash. So I changed my lipstick tonight to a cherry red, and it works better. I need more eyeliner, too. I was just lazy today so did the kohl powder instead of actual liner. I'm timid about darkening my brows - hell, I just started using brow color on them in the past couple years. But I think they need more filling out.

I do think I'm going to get a slight trim for the frizzy ends. If I were to do anything different, I would have had more red put in. There's more than you can see in the pic, but I am feeling brave enough to add more next time.

SQUEEE!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, Mr. Motivation, take me to CC tomorrow??? Please???

I like!

Also, I know what you mean about the make up. I've had my hair either red or blond since about the age of 20, and this spring I decided to go back to my natural dark brown for a few months. It looked awsome with dark eye make up, but without any make up I looked ill. I'd gotten used to not having to wear any make up with the lighter hair. I'm back to red now. Though I guess it all evens out because now I have to touch up the haircolor way more often.*shrugs*

Why I did not go to CC tonight to "show off" the new hair.

So I've been talking about maybe getting extensions, right?

I bought some great (I thought) hair the other day at the beauty supply. A great shade of black and red mixed, not human hair but really nice stuff anyway. And I got all the clips and other supplies needed to make my own clip-in extensions. And I was going to make them up and put them in to wear today.

But I also got a new/used phone today. And needed a new cover for it. So I went to Gibraltar Trade Center in Taylor.

And I see this booth there with sistahs doing nails. And I think, I wonder if they do braids? And I head over there, and sure 'nuff, they do. So I ask Dee Dee how much she'd charge just to put 3 cornrows in my hair so I can sew in my own weaves. All of TEN BUCKS. SOLD!

And she puts in the braids. And while she's working on it, I asked how much she'd charge to sew in the weaves, too. Total: $25. SOLD! So I call Jon, and he meets me there with my hair.

And I give Dee Dee the hair. And damn if it doesn't turn out to be incredibly thin. REALLY cruddy. But she puts it in anyway, even doubles up the thickness.

And she did do a good job. But what I ended up with basically looked like a REALLY, REALLY horribly thin-backed mullet.

This all took place about 8:30-9:00 at night. I ended up having to come home and cut 'em right back outta my hair, it looked really hilarious.

So that's why I didn't go to CC tonight.

I'll definitely go back to Dee Dee. But I have to find better hair. I had only intended to make some clip-ins out of what I found, the package was only $10. But I already went to some other beauty supplies, and one place has a gorgeous package of human hair that matches my mix of red and black perfect. I'll go back and get that some other time, and have Dee Dee put it all in for me. I'll probably have them glued in rather than braided. My hair is so thin, by the time she has braids in, there's not much left to cover the weave tracks.

Silly Critter. :D

Ah fun with extensions!

I had an experience with glue and extensions. It was, erm....something. There was panic involved. And scissors.

Definitely something to leave to people that know what they are doing.

Also, another rule of thumb: do not try new makeup or hair ideas before going out. I've done that many times and ended up staying home because it turned out disastrous.

I'm actually wondering if I can wear extensions period, without them looking like a mullet?

My hair, as you can see from the pics, is shoulder-length and shagged. Long layers. When I was going to make my own clip-in extensions, I was going to put a line of 10" ones at the very bottom, then a line of slightly shorter ones at about mid-ear, and then slightly shorter ones up near the crown. The package of hair I had bought came in 3 different lengths, and I thought that would blend better than all one-length sections.

Dee Dee just put three braids in the very bottom back of my hair, and sewed all 10" lengths in. Even with thicker, better hair wefts, I don't think that would have looked good at all. Basically it looks like shag on top, LONG LENGTHS in the very back.

I gotta do more research. Dee Dee was cheap, that's for sure. But I don't know if she really knew what she was doing.

I had to come back and look again. I really really like that color combo on you. (and I really hate people saying things to me like "you look younger with so and so style" but I have to say it. You seriously look like a teenager in that photo.

So pretty!

Any pics with the extensions? (Flattering or not, I'd love to see how it looked. I love seeing different styles).

I wonder if styling the hair differently with the extensions would work? Maybe style the front hair differently or something? Maybe curl it back to offset the mullet-looking shape? (hard to say without seeing it though).
