Slept with ghost
I noticed that anime tends to be alot better if I watch it in japanese with english subtitles. Mainly Lupin the 3rd and Bleach because the english voice work just annoys me. Cowboy Bebop is about the only anime I can think of were I prefer it in english. What does everybody else prefer? Shade Everdark
Japanese, Japanese, always Japanese. Dubs, nine times from ten, suck. And yes, the voice actor who does Lupin himself just can't be replaced. Of course, I happen to be a little biased....

Lupin is probally the biggest case of crappy dubbing I have seen in japan he sounds smart and smooth but in english dubs he sounds like a moron its a real shame. n0Mad
If I'm close enough to the screen to read the subs, Japanese. If not, English.
Slept with ghost
Cowboy Bebops dubbing is great I doubt that anybody can say otherwise. I havent seen FLCL in japanese so I can not comment on it either way. As far as bleach goes I am just as shocked that I like it as much as anybody else may be. It is the only anime that goes on for more then 30 episodes that I like though I did skip 20 episodes that were made just as filler so the anime could catch up with the magna. The problem with the Lupin dubbing is that Lupin is not a moron watch the first Lupin movie and you will find it hard to think he is.
DeadBurgerKing (10)
The GREATEST example where english dubbing destroys a series is Sailor Moon. Example A: Zoisite was made female in english due to the fact that Zoisite is originally male and in love with Kunzite (Malikite in english) who is also male. Example B: Uranus and Neptune were originally lesbians, but made to be cousins and any affection shown was cut in english. They made Sailor Moon very, VERY girlie and 'kiddie-safe'. I won't even go into the violence that is needlessly cut out.Watching in japanese is the ONLY way to watch it. I find this true with ALOT of anime. So, if it's an option I go japanese. But, weird enough, I prefer Bebop in english too!! **Edit:** The latter episodes Sailor Moon S and Super S where taken over by Clover way instead of DIC, so most of the original talent was recasted, thus we were stuck with a Usagi (Serena) who attempts to impersonate the orignal actress and we end up with a actress that sounds like she's suffering from a horrible sinus infection. On top of that, the decided to throw in very horrible slang, which DOES NOT incorporate into the charecters whatsoever. I quote: "Step off Luna!! You be trippin, yo!" *Hangs his head in disgust*...I'm going to stop now cause I can keep going...
n0Mad
I find ADV does a really good job with most of their dubs. They tend to use a LOT of the same voice actors though so you start recognizing the voices and that can get to be annoying. "Wow, so Lila and Kirika (Najica Blitz Tactics and Noir respectively) are almost the same character." and "Hey, isn't that Kabapu (Excel Saga)?" Head Wreck
there's good dubs and there's bad dubs. I have never watched Cowboy Beebop in english but the japanese voice actors are ingrained on me, same as Nior. Hellsing, now the voice of Alucard is much better in the japanese, but Integera's english voice actor is great. Ghost In The Shell, never watched it in japanese to know sorry. same as paranioa agent and a load of others
Fierce Critter
You know, anime is something I haven't been into since it wasn't called anime (Speed Racer, Kimba), just cartoons. This is one of the few cultural phenomenons I actually feel a bit left out and alone over because I never knew it was a big thing and didn't pay attention to it. Destroit
That all depends actually, I'm split on that. For me it depends on the anime entirely. There are some anime series that are better in English, Cowboy Bebop for instance. It's supposed to have this American-ish bluesy feel to it, so naturally it makes more sense to have it in English. Hellsing is another example for the sheer fact that the whole thing takes place in London, which is actually a fairly important aspect of the series, and if they're all speaking Japanese it just doesn't encompass the feel of it right. Sailor Moon is better in Japanese due to the fact that Sailor Moon's voice in English is DAMN annoying. The dubbing is also kinda cheesy, so I opt Japanese for that one. Samurai Champloo is another easy one since the series takes place in feudal Japan and so much of the culture (well, some isn't accurate, but moreover that's what their aim was) is represented in it. Then neutral ones, that it doesn't make a difference whether or not it's in English or Japanese I usually opt for Japanese. Maybe just 'cause I like reading? I dunno, no real reason I guess, the dubs usually aren't as good I will say. Like I usually watch Lain in Japanese. Outlaw Star though, I got the DVD, and the subtitles do not match up hardly at all with what is being said in English, and the English actually makes more sense and is easier to follow. So there I'm 50/50 Depends on the series I guess.
GothicRavenGoddess (3)
i love anime... sence i dont have the option of watching it in any other language than english.... but when i did, it was Japanese with english sud titles...movies, too.. like live action movies.. japanese, with english subtitles.. InuYasha, think they did a good job with the dubbing, and yes i agree with DBK, they butchered Sailor Moon... but when i was watching it, i was too young to care. I do want all the anime i watch, in their unkut original format, with the english sub titles... I use to have the original piolot episodes for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Along Complex.... in those episodes, the dubbing voices weren't that much different than their japanese counterparts... i don't know what happend... so sad.. anyways.... yeah... Slept with ghost
You will notice that most of the time if you were to watch the english dub along with the english subtitles that they will not match up.
Homicidalheathen
Sigh. LONG HEAVY SIGH. My kid is addicted to the stuff......I wouldn't say she is an expert but......been hooked on the crap (sorry) for 5 yrs now. She says Jap with english sub titles all the way. She does it so much now she is used to reading sub titles and every movie we watch is like having a deaf person in the house....those damn words on the screen.......help me......! She always has the mute on so she can 'read' the movies.......its ruined her. LOL I think she is being a purist but she says its better that way. You can understand it better because of accents and it doesn't ruin the origional sound.

Destroit
I will also say that English anime is far better when you're in college, because you can actually study for exams and not have to have your eyes glued to the screen.

FarrIL
Japanese. Chances are likely, it's also unedited too. =
CandyQuackenbush
I prefer Japanese with English subtitles. Sometimes when you get it in English, it's also edited so you miss out on ALOT of the story line because of either it was very very violent, or there was sometype of sex scene. I used to watch it alot back in the day on Cartoon Network, and then my friend Jake got me into other types *can't remember right now* but he had me HOOKED. I still love Sailor Moon. Laugh at me if you want.

They tend to dumb down alot of japanese things for america mainly due to terms we might not understand or they play a part in japanese myth we might not know and sometimes its just plan censorship like in witch unter robin they cut out alot in that shows run on adult swim.
