Fierce Critter
I talked to Jon a little while ago. He got the job he applied for at Besam Entrance Solutions (BES)!!! He'd been having some doubts whether this would be a good move or not. But after getting their final offer today, he couldn't turn it down. I know it's supposed to be tacky to talk about how much a person earns. But Jon got such a great deal, and he's come SO far in the 9 years we've been together, it's just incredible. I'm so proud of him, I have to share. Right now with Detroit Door & Hardware (DDH), he's earning $16.00. And DDH is suffering. They are laying people off. They don't give out raises. One guy who has been there 4 years just got his first raise - 50 cents. $250+ a month is deducted from his paychecks to pay for our health insurance coverage. He has to pay $15.00 a month for his work phone. He pays $7.00 per week cleaning fee for his uniforms. He has to work at these horrible little mid-Detroit grocery stores where they try to pay him in meat & groceries, and threaten him when he asks for COD payment. BES is going to start him at $20.30 an hour. We're not sure what the deduction for his insurance will be, but one guy who pays for a family of 4 pays $150 a month total. He will have full dental and optical coverage for the first time in any job he's had. He doesn't have to pay for his phone. He doesn't have to pay for uniforms. They only work on big companies in Detroit, especially big hospitals where he'll be working indoors mostly - no mom-&-pop shops where he can get hurt just doing his job. He will be union in 30 days (electrician's union). In I think it's 3 months or so, they raise him another dollar or two. They receive $1.50 raises every year. The company puts in .50 cents every hour they work toward pension (NOT 401K). And here's the most incredible part. In 2.5 years, he will have reached journeyman status - and will automatically be raised to $31.00 an hour. This is so overwhelming. When we got married 9 years ago Thursday, Jon was making $5.45 an hour doing day labor. He's a high-school dropout with a GED. No formal training in anything. I'm SO PROUD of him for coming so far. He's got a recognizable job title, has an actual future with a good company - a true career. He's SO HAPPY and I'm so happy for him. My parents are happy, too. He'll be putting in a resignation letter tomorrow, with 2 weeks notice. But the guy who is hiring him at BES has already told him if they get snarky at DDH and let him go early, he can go to BES the next day. (DDH knows he's looking at BES, and have talked about making him an offer to stay, but he won't have it.) Oh, he'll still have a company vehicle. He's cleaning out his DDH van tonight just in case they let him go early. I think we'll have to have an official celebration when things get ironed-out and go forward. Party and Jon & Camille's!!!! Fierce Critter
Good for you guys, you are now in a much higher income bracket than most of the DGNers on here Well at least me. Believe me - I didn't post $ figures to brag in an effort to make anyone feel bad. Even at $16.00 an hour, I know Jon was doing better than a lot of people on DGN. Even people with degrees. I do find that sad. I wish everyone could be doing really well, and I'm so sorry so many people have to leave the state to do so. I just am so overwhelmed with how far he has come with so little background, you know? Yes, the money is great. Duh. But even if they had hired him in at the same amount he's making now, I'd be happy. Because he's moving on to a much better situation with a much better future. As for that dinner, I think one of the things we're going to end up doing is moving to a better rental here in Wyandotte. Once we do, we will definitely have a housewarming. BYOB, but damn if we won't have some fucking good foodage for everyone. :D

creatureofthenyte
That's awesome!! Congradulations ! When Jon gets into the union, how, if at all, will that affect how much he has to pay towards health insurance ? I'm curious because I think its handled differently depending on which labor union it is. I'm a Teamster, and it was negotiated into our contract, that the company pays the total cost of our health insurance. I must say, it Is particularly awesome that Jon will get up to $31/hr in the economy that y'all are dealin with out there.

Onyx
That is a really good position, and he deserves it too. Really hard these days to find someone reliable who will do the job right. They are getting a good worker and you can feel good about working hard when the pay is good. I'm so happy for you two!

I'm just a kid starting out in the whole game of life, have only been on my own for a year now, not as hard as I expected but definately not as much freedom as I was used to before. Go you guys! Mmmm food + party = do I even have to say I'll be there? Everyone knows my stance of food + parties already.
