"DETROIT GOTHIC"

with DJ Troy Spiral

89.3 FM or WHFR.FM on the Net

Gothic / Industrial / Alternative

Next Show: Saturday Nov 17th

5pm - 8pm

89.3 FM WHFR is a college radio station based in dearborn. Currently the effective broadcast range is not as large as it should be due to some (legal and other) issues. A rouge guesstimate of the broadcast range and to check and see if you can hear us on FM in your area:

Can you hear us over the air? Broadcast map:

Regardless you can year WHFR on the Internet anywhere: WHFR.FM

Yes I'll have to run my mouth. One of the (many) lose station rules is you cant go more than 15 minutes or 3 tracks without some kind of commentary. (they aren't particularly strict but still) So god help us all. I'll probably be pretty tame / limited talking for the first few weeks.

They know me down at the station pretty well and have been trying (well a few particular people in the power structure) to get me a decent timeslot for several months. Really this is the best possible time slot that i could realistically hope for.

The only other better timeslots(s) would be something like 8-10PM but the guys in that time slot range have been doing their show basically since i went off the air like 5 years ago and moving them out of that time slot would be pretty unfair to them, and also they've got a pretty solid following built up. (Its a hip-hop show)

For a long time i've been stuck in "fill-in-for-any-random-format-guy" status, this is (almost) my own regular show now. Theres a few minor things that still have to happen for me to keep this time slot as a regular thing, but for now its assumed its my timeslot and my choice of music format.

The guy that was doing this 5-8 time slot had been in it for like 6 years or something, but due to some work issues i guess he cant do it anymore. After months of me trying to position myself for this exact time slot, its kind of amazing that it opened up, i thought it was impossible and i'd just have to get some non pre-city club time slot and wait like 5 years for one of them to quit or something.

Yay. (*stress* but the good kind)

The music will be heavy on the more traditional real instruments/vocals type stuff if your used to listening to lets call it "city club" music. Not to say that i wont play any VNV/Apop/Covenant type stuff , it will just be in the minority at least for now.

Also heavy on "Anthems" that is my term for fairly well known stuff that is easy for joe-blow to like even if he's never heard the stuff before. I tend to not want to impress anyone with how obscure i can be. (and i sure could be if i wanted to)

This is the ONLY show of its kind on FM in this area and up to 90% of all listeners , even on a regular show thats been around for years are first time listeners. DJs that don't keep their audience in mind just arent doing their job. This is far different than a club-DJ gig in terms of who the listeners are.

I want to give this sort of music exposure, and have it be fairly easy to like for the non-hardcore types. Also playing random-friends-local-band-song is out. Unless you feel a particular local groups song is just as good as say Bauhaus or Sisters, it will be unlikely to get played. This show is partly a public service, and the random newbie that turns on the show for 10 minutes wants to hear "the best of the best".

Having said that , obviously me being me, there will be random oddities and some lesser known good stuff just becasue i cant help myself.

Well the show went well i think. Surprisingly the frig-gin phone was ringing constantly. Mostly people calling to ask what the name of XYZ song was. Even though i back announce every song, lol.

One girl called and said "what was the name of that song that just finished before the one that's playing now?" I told her what it was, then she says "I'm a DJ at city club i think i might play that as my last song." I said, "Are you Jenine? " "yes" "Hi I'm troy..." heh. Was a surprising call.

Anyhow the show is STILL not totally decided as being "mine" yet. Ugh.

Its really a lot of work, at least the troy system is. I tend to agonize over the play list for hours and hours rather than just throw some stuff together. I view it more as public service (and eventually DGN service) than really something i do "for fun" necessarily.

The enjoyable part about all this stuff for me is knowing that at least a FEW people get enjoyment out of it.

Thanks to everyone for the positive comments. =)

Cher , i can take calls (which i do a lot), but putting them actually on the air i should hold off on for awhile. I need to solidify this gig , and having live phone calls can get screwed up sometimes, best not to do anything that might "rock the boat" this soon. Not that anyone would really cause any trouble (and there's always the dump button to bleep them out) but its just better to make sure my position is secure first before i risk any potential entanglements, seeing as what a major long-term time investment getting this dang thing has turned out to be.

Figures - you're just out of range of the hotel. We might have been able to get Brandy to play it on the overhead speakers in the hallways if we were closer. :cry

Internet?

Podcast it, baby!

I want to be able to go on the site right now, and get my DJ Spiral fix.

Supposedly on-demand is in the works for all WHFR shows. No ETA though. I'm guessing that means "it'll be awhile".

I can't listen- but congrats!!

Internet?
