Badass Goths

Recommended Posts

Sooooo since we've had pretty much every picture thing going from "sexy goth chicks" to "sexy goth guys" I decided that we need a category for goth people who are just plain fashion badasses, those renegades of style. You know, the people you see at places like City Club that have cooler outfits, falls, makeup, ideas, etc than your average person.

Well, let's start with Japan, just for the sheer fact that 9 times out of 10 they're better than we are  . As you all know, I'm quite the Fashion Hoe, and so therefore I'm madly in love with Harajuku. I wanna move to Japan and seriously dress up and hang around Harajuku Station all day looking damn sweet for no apparant reason whatsoever. So...I'll post the first picture, of one of these Harajuku girls:

Go on now peeps...post away, what you think, is total badass gothness (any kind of goth will do too, everything from cybergoth to raver kids. I'm not talking traditional "goth" necessarily)

It can even be pictures of yourself, if you think you can own up to Teh Sass, that is  I'm sure I can dig up some of myself where I was pretty damn bizarre, that's for sure.

Oh, man, the Harajuku girls!

Are they still around? Are they still cool?

You bastard...I so seriously wish I lived over there like you since, you know, they're Japanese.

Japan > America

No disputes.

And yes, Harajuku girls will always be more hip than sliced bread.

PEEEPS

Post pics of badass fashion renegades, I command it! (i.e. whole point of this thread, you jackers  )

So, umm, these Harajuku kids look fantastic and all.

But do they do anything other than hang out at some mall?

Actually, no, they don't.

They hang out over the Harajuku train station, near the entrance to the Meiji shrine. They sit on the footbridge, and chatter, and gossip, and allow people to take pictures of them. Between the pervs, the foreign tourists, and the straight-up admirers, there are no shortage of the photos.

GAWD...I want that job, but sadly, I'm not Asian enough and white girls just don't look as cutsey. I mean I try part-time when clubbing, but it's usually friends taking pics of me, not strangers (actually, that did happen ONCE in Gusoline Alley when I had the neon-yellow based outfit on, with the black stripes on my lips and all that crazyness. Some jock thought I looked awesome and asked me to pose)

I was talking to Jon about this the other day.

I admit - I'm really impressed by the outfits they put together. Via this thread, this is the first time I've really looked into the whole thing beyond what Gwen Stefani has brought over via her previous album. I mean I knew about it all, but didn't really look into any of it.

A few observations. I wonder to myself how much of it is actual self-expression, and how much is one-upsmanship? "She did that with that outfit, I'm going to do the same but add this..." There's a fine line.

Another is I really don't think this is something the lower classes are able to take part in. Some of the pictures I was looking at were amazing - and then there were some that were kinda mediocre. The mediocre ones seemed to be a lot of taking items from around the house and trying to make them work in the style. While the amazing ones were a lot of obviously purchased items put together.

Not that either are bad. But I do have to wonder if this is all rich Japanese elite kids, and is a pecking order established based on who can afford to buy/wear what.

Jon and I watched Babel, and I believe one of the main characters, a Japanese deaf girl, was hanging out there, though they didn't focus on the stylish kids. The character was obviously from a rich family. Though she's just a fictional character, it's one thing that also got me wondering about how much a person's place in society affects their involvement.

Not to turn it all into some big political/class issue. Parallels can be drawn between Harajuku Station and City Club. Some of us buy all our stuff at Hot Topic. Some of us make our own stuff. Some of us blend the ready-made with thrift store and homemade things. So I guess it's sorta the same.

Never understood all that trendy Japanese club kid fashion.

To me Japan has always been about:

Mad Masato & His Skillful Cats

The Jet Rock N' Roll Of GUITAR WOLF!

Except, um, that it's really not club kids we're talking about here, and it's not really fashion, in the strict sense of the word. It's dress-up day for a bunch of bored high school girls. Or it was when I was over there.

They aren't even goth, by any substantive benchmark one might use to define the term. They just like dressing up full-face makeup and outlandish outfits and hanging out at the shopping area gear toward teens. They aren't mopey or depressive, to use the stereotype, they don't declare an appreciation for the music or for the 'darker side of life', they aren't Romantics, and they don't really lay claim to any sort of liberation.

And to speak to your point, FC, I should think that they would have to come from slightly more upper-middle class families, yes. I read interviews with several of the girls while I was over there, and according to them, they can spend upwards of $500 easily for a moderately involved getup. Of course, a lot of the girls also just sew their own, by the same token. Take that for what you will.
