Well I hear if your going to do writing you have to buy the push tube thing or it is hard to manage......so I may next time cause this girl I know got one for a few bucks online someplace...

The lettering came out kinda crapy...but it was tasty!

Then there are the place settings in their favoret colors....

And this scarf thing 2's friend made for her...she could sell these. She does characature work for money already I guess.

The scattered, awkward writing adds to the feel. I like. :)

Cake decorating is a lost art, methinks. My sister, who will be 58 next year, used to make really elaborate cakes with all those decorating tubes and stuff for our birthdays and other celebrations when I was growing up. I miss those cakes.

I got into it a little prior to moving to NC. I have a really nice big set of Wilton decorating tips and gadgets, but I haven't touched it since I bought it. I passed up a GIGANTIC cake decorating set at a yard sale this past summer because I didn't want to buy it and have it collect dust. But I'd like to get back to it someday.

I'm with FC. It all works together and has the right feel. Good job!

If you want to look locally at tips, bags, etc., there is Heinrich's Decorating Nook on 10 Mile east of Van Dyke in Center Line. That's where I go when I need baking/decorating supplies. I don't order that type of stuff online as I'm the type of person who has to see the items up close in my hands to be sure it's what I'm looking for.

Hehe.

Years ago, we made a goth cake for a friend.

Of course the frosting had to be black, so we just combined everything we had, but all the colors combined do not make black. They make mauve.

And then we didn't make enough.

So we made more, but it never was the exact same color as the first batch. So, it was a cake half frosted in mauve, half in maroon.

And then the cake, which was a layer cake, kinda started to sink.

It was the most ridiculous confection I've ever seen.

He ate it anyway.

And as for cake decorating, a friend of mine does it - she's super talented and does all sorts of crafty things. I am in awe every time I see one of her creations. She did one for a kids party with an 'under the sea' theme and made like a whole mer-people city on the top of the cake. I couldn't believe it.

I am so going to get a tube and the attachments next time.

This is the best part though......when I started squeezing out the black frosting tube, a little red squish like blood came out on the white frosting........I left it there. How goth is that???

Thanks for all the info peeps......yah its not as easy as it looks....maybe I will take a class.

People aren't using push-tubes so much anymore. Since the 80's when my sister picked up her first piping bag, there's been more of a return to the bags.

They take some practice. But I really do find them much more comfortable & controllable than those tubes.

Tip: for easy filling, find a cup or glass or even a jar, put the bag point-down into the glass, and fold the bag over the edge of the glass to the outside, kinda like you are turning a sleeve over at the end of your arm. Makes filling the bag much easier, leaving a cleaner part where you need to start twisting it.

Also, Sass - another great anecdote. :) But in case you never discovered this (and for others FYI), there are excellent paste or gel frosting colorings that make great blacks & just about any color you can think of. They're available at places that specialize in cake decorating supplies, and I'm willing to bet you can find some in the Wilton section at Michael's and JoAnne's stores.

There's also a cake/candy making store on Ecorse Road in Allen Park. I forget the name but a Switchboard.com search for cake decorating in Allen Park should bring it up.
