I know that I'm overweight, but according to that test, I'm morbidly obese. I dont believe that. Oh yeah, I know that Im fat. Everyone else knows that I'm fat....

I'm not self-conscience about it anymore because its just not worth it. I want to lose the weight to make myself healthy, not to make people think, "OMG! Look at that hot babe!"

Our sense of weight is skewed in the U.S. since we are used to so many people being overweight. What most people in the US think of as "Average" upon just looking at someone, typically is "Overweight" from a medical standpoint. Its so bad that even discussing such things gets people uptight. Then we see the random exception stories on the news about how someone was said to be overweight that wasn't, and we scream OMG SEE!! That's what the media does, quotes exceptions, its a bad way to get at the truth of a situation. We are so anxious about our weight that we even blow a gasket if someone uses a term we don't like.

That above scale there is obviously going to be inaccurate, and there is no "single" BMI , if the numbers are adjusted a certain way they will agree with whatever someone thinks is the "best" weight measure. But it is a far better rule of thumb than just looking at someone or just looking at weight alone, which is the more common system. Often the "experts" or "health buffs" poo-poo something because its not particularly accurate, when most people, that don't have the time nor energy to get into the nitty-gritty of things just need something very basic.

The only time BMI would even be an issue is when we are in "good shape" and might want to split hairs. According to Odims scale posted above: 28.0 (me) means... lose some damn weight, don't try to argue about how I'm "not fat" or how its not perfectly accurate. . Yeah maybe i don't "look fat" to some people but I'm an unhealthy weight (which in a colloquial use of the term is "fat"). Maybe not "morbidly obese" but its just a term people use, deal. More important than our oversensitivity to terms, is to just get to business and cut down on the chow and beef up on the exercise.

Not that i seem to ever be able to sustain a healthy lifestyle. There's no need for a "secret diet tip" or "the uber good exercise program" the trick is to DO IT, we all (generally) know what we should do how to actually do it, and keep doing it, for a long, long time, is the problem.

OK, so I was checking for my height, a healthy weight is between 106 to 146 that is a HUGE range. Wow!! SO, depending on if I wanna get skinny in the healthy range, I can be within 40 lbs.. dang! that's huge.

But seriously, I wanna lose 40 lbs, but I guess I could stand to lose 70-80 lbs and still be in a healthy to moderately underweight health category. DANG!!! that just doesn't make sense.

That's because our bodies can hold up to about another 40 lbs of weight and still run "healthily". Ideally the charts are implying your body runs optimally at the lower end of the spectrum.

My BMI tells me I'm healthy if I'm between 125-160 so that means my optimal weight should be around 125-130ish, but I can be all the way up to 160 and still be considered healthy enough, but definately healthier in the lower range.

It's weird how they set the BMI up like that. I asked a teacher and looked it up awhile ago to get the answer to that mystery .

Oh...also as I've mentioned before, there's also such a huge range because you have to take muscle mass and bone structure into consideration. That's the second reason it's so massive.

23.7

but the bf got 29.3 i think, which i think is wrong cuz he is not over weight

The downfall of the BMI scale is that it doesn't account for muscle.

I actually had the coolest thing does to me, I can't remember what it was called but they took an electrode and put it on my foot by my middle toe and another on my hand by my middle finger. Basically they sent an electric current through my body which told me my EXACT body fat percentage (I cried in my coffee shortly thereafter ), BMI, other stuff, even how much of my water was intracellular and extracellular. It was nuts. But those are the kinds of tests they can do to find out to a TEE how much flab you've got on your body to lose.

This thing says I'd still be healthy if I weighed 125 lbs?!? I say I'd look like I needed life support. At 155 lbs I had people telling me I looked too thin. I didn't agree with them, per say, but at 5'9" I was getting into size 8 clothing in a lot of brands, and I thought that was plenty thin enough for my frame. I'd like to get back down to that size, but I wouldn't want to go under 140-145, I like my curves.

insulting yourself is no way to go about making positive life cahnges!! :wink

progress is progress, so just keep at it!!

Thanks. It just gets overwhelming sometimes..I've lost so much already, but I still have so much to lose. blah blah blah.

I'll tell you what though, I'm going through my closet and getting rid of clothes that are too big. It feels really good to put them on and be swimming in them! Especially when I remember some of the clothes almost being too tight.

I had a body scan done and it was so cool. It actually tells you what your bone mass is, how much your body weighs with just bones, everything but fat, and a percentage per body area saying how much of it is fat. I found out that my bone density is off the charts for women by about 15% and that to properly measure I need to use the men's scale because my bones weigh so much. SO I feel a bit better but I'm still fat!

According to my doctor...I should be between 130-150 pounds. I got down to 200 once and I felt great. I gained a lot of weight when I was in a bad relationship and I'm still dealing with it. However, I think that 130 would be a bit too little for me. I like my curves too. I would probably be more happy somewhere in the middle at 140.

Losing weight is a hard thing to do sometimes. You just have to stick with it. If only I could take my own advice. My mom always told me, you didn't gain it over night and you aren't going to lose it over night either.

Some ways to help yourself: Have someone go on walks with you. Have some headphones when no one is available to go on walks with you. Don't set a goal that's too high, or you will feel like you aren't achieving anything. Say you want to lose 100 pounds, if you look at it as losing 100 pounds you will very overwhelmed. Look at it as you want to lose 5 pounds. That makes it seem a bit more achievable and in a shorter period of time. When you reach that goal of 5 pounds, reward yourself with a small token (nothing edible). That will give you more of an incentive to get there.

Now if only I could do this myself. :X

You know, I think that no matter how much weight I lose, it's going to be very hard for me to shake this "I'm fat" feeling and self-image. It seems no matter what I do or say to myself, I just can't be convinced. *sighs*

Oh I had that WEIRD instinct. Trust me, it will happen. When I was at my skinniest some 40 effin pounds ago (smashes face on desk in self loathing anger) and totally ridiculously hot, nearly washboard abs hot, I still had this weird thing going on where I felt self concious and wouldn't wear stuff that showed my stomach.

Literally took me six months to figure out that I wasn't fat. It was just for so long I was really fat to the point where I definately shouldn't have been showing any skin that I had that habit/instinct engrained into my head.

After about 6 months I wore short shirts and see through stuff without still having the little dude in the back of my head go "Hey, Cher, you probably look like a moose wearing this"

Annnnnnnd right after I got used to dressing sexy I got fat again, not my full weight but almost there, which is where I'm at currently. Ooooh the irony, right?

I'm working on losing it again before I'm totally unattractive like I was. My sex life has already taken a hit  I don't even want it anymore 'cause I don't feel pretty enough, so I really gotta stop slacking before my sex life is totally non-existant.
