Wireless Internet Curiousity

Recommended Posts

Calling all computer experts!!!! I need help!!!! I just got a laptop pc, and wireless internet. I am having trouble with my wirless internet; I can connect to the web every now and then, but it disconnects whenever it feels like it. I have been on the phone with AT&T a coupla times, and still haven't fixed it. With their direction, I have tried numerous things and nothing's helped so far.

Anyone who has any idea of what needs to be done, please reply in this thread or PM me, thanks.....

I have the same problem since I moved into town.

Same router, same cable net provider, all the same equipment. I've been round and round with the equipment tech support, my cable techs, and all they can tell me is that it's probably interference. Makes sense. My town has free wi-fi access too (1 hour a day so I don't use it) so that could be another factor.

Funny thing is, when I was in the apartments my wireless worked flawlessly with never any disconnections, but my wired access tended to be slow. Now it's the opposite - blazing fast wired access and intermittent disconnects with my wireless (Hence my current project to wire my whole house).

did it ever occur to you that even though you may have a wireless card, it might also be trying to hack into someone else's internet? My god-dad's does that (he has both a card, and internal wireless connections, and its constantly picking up other's connections, when we pass them, as we are flying down the interstate... he's a truck driver) so, sometimes, it will kick you off, because it has sensed that its being hacked into, you know, and unauthorized user. Sometimes your computer can do this on your own. There is a way to correct it, if that is in fact your problem. If this is the case, here's how to fix it. Next to your clock, is all your little running programs. There should be one that represents your internet connections. Click on it. Through that, you can change what your default internet provider is. (should be the one that is your card) Okay, if its not the problem, then i don't know what to tell you.. either your card is damaged in some way, your wireless isn't installed correctly, or there is an outside source interfering with your connection (someone trying to hack into your connections, which sucks)

It's a GSM connection, not the same thing. It's essentially a cellular wireless card. It's not prone to the same kind of problems....

Onyx, What hrtz is your cordless phone in your house?

I have one of those 6.0 Dect phones that's supposed to be interference-free. Since I switched to them I don't hear that wireless buzz I used to get when I got close to the laptop.

It could very well be one of the neighbor's setups that cuts it off though. I think it's the price I pay for living in town - some interference now and again. The houses here are very very close together and I have almost no yard. I can almost touch both houses on each side if I stretch out my arms :)
