phee
My opinion (and just my opinion so don't get bent out of shape): Nothing new really, they have some more organic drums sounds, more instrumentals. A friend of mine said: "It's really a departure for them" I don't see that at all. Pretty good album, I am looking forward to seeing them in a few months, but no improvement or lowering in quality one way or the other...

Black Sunday
Ok I got it today. It's pretty good after a quick listen. just a few minor complaints though 1) track number 3 is called Arena. it's almost Erasure-sounding, very poppy and catchy - but it seems to have "real" drums. Now I have nothing against live drummers but it doesn't fit in this song - everything else is synth poppy and then it has a rock n roll drum in there. It almost verges on being as cheesy as Erasure but it pulls back just enough not to sound to sugar-pop. 2) too many ambient interludes.....sounds like a lot of filler....in fact there is only like 6 actual "songs", the rest are these soundscapes where not much happens. What I do like 1) track 2 (forget the name) sounds like a pop version of Delien, which is my friends electro-industrial group. 2) the song entropy seems to take a guitar sample and bend it thru an oscillator and it sounds like it could be techno/death metal at the beginning. 3) the ballad in the middle of the album is interesting, lots of weird blips and bleeps. Ok well I will have more thoughts after I listen to it more, so far I'd have to say it's worth the $15 I PAID.
tabycat
I liked the CD but I wish they had some more of their faster songs. yea there was a lot of instrumental but I did like them as well, but would have preferred more actual songs with lyrics... cause oooo that voice! TomCat
I borrowed a friends copy, and it doesn't seem too far off from their usual workings. I prefer the vocally driven songs to the purely/predominantly instrumental pieces.
phee
To me a "departure" is more like when Ministry turned from synthpop to thrash music, or like when Test Dept. decided to do a Celtic album. VNV nation using less vocals is really not a depature, just VNV with less words.

Black Sunday
track number 10 sounds like detroit techno, track number 11 sounds like can....if can made techno.
FarrIL
...have any? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> While I'll always feel that 'Empires' is their best album, I feel that 'Matter and Form' has got a good sound to it. Chrome has got to be among the best dance songs VNV has made and, to me, Arena has the same effect Beloved and Saviour (vox) has on me...... they're gorgeous songs and they send that rush of chills up my arms and down my back. I've been playing those songs non-stop since yesterday. Over all though, I think 'Matter and Form' is awesome, I was left thoroughly impressed with it. ;

Troy Spiral (13)
Just listened to the whole thing twice on Rapsody, and parts of it 4-5 times. Decent. Probably wont get a third listen from me though. Even within the context of just VNVs catalog , i'd probably prefer to spend my "listening time" elsewhere.
