JaneDead
If you really want something reliable and not too old, you're probably going to want to step up in price. It's totally up to you, but my recommendation, IF possible, is to try and finance a vehicle. You may be one of those people that hates having a car payment. can't, can't and can't :(
Msterbeau
yeah it especially sucks when you have 3 kids and live alone If you need a ride somewhere, shoot me a message. If I have time I'll try to hook you up.

Rayne
I had a 1998 Chevy Malibu LS (with some options but not all) that I totalled in 2006. Roads were wet and my brakes were bad (I actually had a new set sitting in my backseat ... and had planned on replacing them after court). I couldn't stop and the car in front of me had just pulled off the lot (you know that brand new just off the lot brake touchy-ness? He had that going on. I ran it under an Explorer and totalled it. Even the driver of the Explorer was the first to come to my defense. My Malibu had 120,000 miles on it. The insurance company immediately totalled it out for $5500. I'm in an insurance battle over my Mazda being crushed by a tree in my driveway last month. $12,000 worth of damage done and they fixed it (not what I wanted them to do) saying it's still worth $18,000 - ish ... but I'll never get that out of it, with the structural damage that was done. It's only a year old but I drive too much and it already has 22,000 miles on it. That said, vehicles are expensive ... you get what you pay for and somtimes you don't. Phee bought a minivan (2001 Ford Windstar) shortly after we got together, paid blue book for it (don't remember how much it was at the time) .... luckily he had a 30 day warranty on it because the transmission was replaced about two weeks after he got it. Later he totalled that (we go through a lot of cars in this house ... kind of like Kleenex and cell phones) and got about $7000 out of it. On the flip side of that, my brother bought a older Ford Escort from a family friend in high school for a dollar (no joke ... she just had to get rid of it). That car lasted him quite a few years. Nearly 10. It looked like a POS, but it ran well.

JaneDead
it is a 1992 grand marquis. pretty great condition too! low miles 110,000 (with a few extra, forget the *exact* amount) no rust (i have yet to find any anyways) good interior; grey leather (except they were a smoker, so it is a little stinky inside) drives like a dream. i feel like i am floating on the road. except today- driving on the ice SUCKED since it is a rear-wheel drive. the only things i have seen wrong with it: it has power locks and one of the back ones does not work. the slider button thing for the heat seems like it is slightly broken/loose. it works just fine but i think it could possibly break if i am not careful. it has a really old sticky car phone still in it. other than that, and those are NOT a big deal, i can not complain!!! Msterbeau
On the plus side... that should be an easy to maintain car. Simple... plenty of parts available for the mechanicals. On the negative side... gas mileage is gonna suck. Congrats!!
JaneDead
On the negative side... gas mileage is gonna suck. yeah. however, i don't plan on doing a LOT of driving. just around here- work, kids to school, grocery shopping... and another plus is- if something were to ever happen to it, i do believe my uncle would let me borrow his car as a back up car. he has an extra [lease car] so i don't have the DAILY stress i had with my OTHER car always thinking - oh my god, what will i do if/when this goes, or that breaks, or the dry rotted tires are destroyed for good. and i am so happy there is NOTHING wrong (as far as i can tell) with this car so i can just drive it and not think damn, i gotta fix that soon. the only thing i had to do was get windshield wiper blades because i do believe the last owner NEVER replaced them. they were SO BAD.
