Hello? Can Anyone Help Me?

Recommended Posts

If anyone can help me fix my three computers, for free, or a small fee, I'd be SO thankful. I have to re-install windows on all three... one is running XP, the other two aree Win98. I want to upgrade the two 98's to XP, but i don't have the money to do so... that and we don't have the resore disks for any of them. One's a Compaq, one's a Gateway, the other an HP... not to mention that the HP (the one running on XP) has a bloody Trojan!!! Mine's the oldest, i think, its the fastes, its also the one that kinda died. EXPLORER.EXE died... anywho... I'd really be grateful if someone would help me out. Money's tight, so you'd be doing me, and my god-mom a HUGE favor!

PLEASE!!!

UPDATE: THE TROJAN IS GONE

Let me talk to my friend for you. he runs a computer fixing co.

I could possibly fix them as well.

For the Trojan download Ad-ware Virus Scan, it should take care of it. The Exploere dying means you have a worm in your win32files....

I'll see what I can do for you..see if my friend will do it for free.

Thank you so much. We don't have much money, and these PC's are driving us mad! They have been "fixed" before, but it seemed to only be a band-aid...

If you wanna talk further on this, feel free to IM me via yahoo. (same S/n) if you aree able to.

I appreciate ANYTHING that can be done. And at this point, i don't care if I lose all my pics and such. I just want to be able to use my computer and be able to do stuff that will be supported by windows. Sheesh, I'll take Windows 2000, at this point. I have a new web cam, and I can't use it, because Win98 doesn't support it... sorry, i'm ranting...

Anyways.... yeeah... hit me up...

Sorry. I have the knowledge, but not the OS or restore disks.

Keep in mind that Ad-aware and Spybot are for detection and removal of spyware and adware. That's it. They do not detect/remove viruses. You will need different software for that.

So, when my god-mom gets the chance, she's gonna call this guy she knows, to fix our computers.... bad thing is, he was the one that "fixed" them before. I want someone who isn't stuck on liking one Windows program or another. Who knows what they are doing, and will be willing to upgrade our two Win98 computers to at least 2000 or higher. I know that these things cost money, and we aren't asking you to go out of your way, I'm saying if you have upgraded, and still have some extra Windows programs laying around. We need the problem to be fixed, not just a band-aid laid over the top. :) I hope that someone can help us. It would be appreciated. Right now, money is REALLY tight. In actuality, the most we could offer is dinner. :( i know, not much incentive to help.... I'm sorry. If things start looking better, financial wise, we might be able to work something out, as far as payment wise. Please don't let this deter you from helping.

You're problem, is easy. You need a Mac. :p

Agreed.

I've had this one for 15 months now. Only big issue has been the case cracked and Apple replaced it under warranty (and I still have two years of the awesome warranty left). I have a slight screen flicker, but it's not a constant thing and it's barely even an issue really.

I had been through 4 Window's based machines in 5 years prior to buying the Mac. :)

Back in the day i could have helped here, but unfortunately I'm unable currently. (Don't have XP/2000 re-install disks, nor the health/energy/mental focus. Lucky to drag my ass out of the house a few times a week to do uber-simple tasks if im lucky)

What your asking for is fairly simple, but could be very time consuming if there are any snags.

Also depending on how old these things are (im assuming pretty old) you might actually be turning them into slow as hell moving paper weights by "upgrading" to XP or W2000.

well, the one that started out at XP (the HP) moves slower than the computer that I use (the gateway that CAME with Win98)The Compaq was downgraded from XP to Win98. I don't know what is wrong with them... so anyways... like i said, ANYTHING that can be done, would be great... lol

And if i could afford a MAC, i'd already have one. I want a MAC notebook, but i don't see that happening anytime soon...

What about a refurbished Macbook? These are usually cheaper.

Refurbished MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - White Original price: $1,099.00

13.3-inch glossy widescreen display Your price: $949.00

1GB memory

80GB hard drive

Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)

Built-in iSight camera

Refurbished MacBook 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - White Original price: $1,299.00

13.3-inch glossy widescreen display Your price: $1,049.00

1GB memory

120GB hard drive

8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

Built-in iSight camera

Mac's lap tops are awesome. I love mine. I wish I had gone for the mid grade one though. For $200 I would have gotten a dvd burner and a bigger HD and something else but I don't remember right now.

I bought mine in Sept and I finally have one more payment left.

That would be great, if we had any extra funds. i want a MAC notebook, but funds are lacking... we are barley getting by as it is.... so yeah.... thanks for the suggestions, tho...

oh yes, as it stands, the Compaq is like 20 years old, the Gateway is 10 years old, and the HP is 5 years old, so yeah, they are pretty up there in age... i mean come one, the compaq has only 9.30 MB of hard drive space, and i don't mean it has that left, that's how much space there is total, adding up used and un-used space...

This is more or less a given if it actually IS 20 years old. The first single gigabyte hard drives only started coming standard about 10-15 years ago, can't remember exactly when.

My family's first computer was a compaq, I remember bragging to my neighbor that we had a 1.2GB HD with a 100mhz pentium, while his was only a 400MB HD 486 with a 75mhz Pentium as a secondary. And that's the original Pentium, none of your new fandangled P2/3/4, MMX technology, dual core crap. Now that I think about it, microprocessing has come a REALLY long way, even in my lifetime.

oh yes, in the gateway, there are two spaces left for memory... or what the Gateway book calls DIMM

Since you have several really older computers, maybe try Linux on one of them. I have a dinosaur that my kid uses just for surfing, doesn't even have a hard drive working - runs right from the Knoppix disk. Damn Small Linux runs on it too and that thing FLIES now. Wonderful for surfing.

Wish I lived closer, I'd bring over a disk and show you.
