I have an old Compaq laptop that runs windows 98 and still works! But it's slow and if I can get it fixed for cheap or free I want to sell it.

I hope I get a good laptop for my birthday.

Not just *any* laptop--a good one, where I'm going with my parents to shop around and probably have to pay for 1/2 of it still, but it'll be worth it. I can use it for school [my books come w/ CD-ROMs with practice tests], at work [free wireless internet] and other places...easy to carry :)

I like to be creative with my photos and music. I have an Ipod where the Ituens are on my parents Dell desktop at home (I just recently moved, the Compaq wouldn't hold the Itunes well)...

Any suggestions on what I should look for in a new computer?

  • 4 weeks later...

Had an iMac, gave it away. (Didn't like how the OS worked. Hated how iTunes organizes music files. Plus I have an old collection of windows based software I like to run. I know Macs can proly run it now but it's just not the same)

Built my own PC with a gutted version of XP that runs flawless (I only kept what it needs to run and get it's updates). For about a third of the cost of a Mac with the same amount of power. (at the time)

I know this cause I checked some new ones out at the local Mac store on one of the many trips to get an iPod fixed that keeps blowing up. Way over priced.

Now the factory built store bought PC's I'd recommend to stay away from them. Too much BS built in so they run like crap and have all kinds of issues. Plus Vista is a resource hog and it seems to be all you can get on a pre-built machine these days. (in 2009 a "fixed" version of Visa is supposed to be out, I think they may even change the name, but that's only what I've heard)

And these days you can even build your own laptops.

For some Macs are the way to go. Just not for me I guess.

i really dont like macs....

ive built my own pcs for quiet some time minus the one i got for free from ford when i was 12

which i modified untill they stopped making parts compatable with due to old mb

ive never liked macs

from the ones we had at school when i was like in 2nd grade that were from the late 80s

to the ones of today they just dont appeal to me....

i love my dos/ windows format

i really want to build a pc that has the old dosshel os on it where you have to hit the tab button to select what you want to do...just for the giggles of watching people get frustrated trying to use it

There are two kinds of computer users.

1. They want to get things done with a minimum of fuss.

2. They tinker with their computer all day and never really accomplish anything.

I think we know who is who... :-P

lol its not my fault i had to make the red leds in my case reactive to any sort of noise that comes out of the subwoofer attached to my computers sound card

or that all 4 of my case fans have all blue led lights to counter the blinking lights that are red and to match the outside of the case being blue

or that i put glow in the dark paint on certain surfaces of the case's interior or on top of the chrome reflective racing tube i coverd and tied my wires in to increase air effenciancy when the motherboard can stay at a consistant rate of 93 degrees f and my processer at 87 degrees f

or the reflective tape i put on the bottom of the inside of the case to reflect all the lights:whistle:

I still own a working Pentium Pro hard drive (it holds a lot of my movies and media). It should probably be in a collection or museum. Now, if I could only find it in one of the many boxes I've yet to sort through.. I sure would like to watch "Demon City Shinjuku" and "Urotsukidōji" again, and the only copies I have are on there.

Thanks to a friend, I got exposed to Apple Computers:

Worked with Apple II+ as a kid.

Worked with an Apple Lisa in 1983 or so

Worked with the first Mac in 1984

Worked with Win Machines for a while, including tech support for versions up to XP. Drove me nuts for a bit.

Owned Macs since 2000 (G3 Pismo Powerbook, still running as a reliable backup/second computer.)

Working on a G4 PowerBook now (1.67/2g/100gbhd/128mb graphics)

Have a G4 Cube I would like to bring online (up its graphics card and memory)

Would like to get the latest iMac

Love to work with them.

I managed to save a friend's wedding with that G3 PowerBook. They had custom music from one of the local artists for the wedding. CD Player at the church died, and I was able to bring it into iTunes easily (had it available for the bachelor party.)
