I have 3.

I have an Apple II and a Mac Classic. They work, but mostly just take up space in my garage.

I have a iMac that the younger boys play Diablo II on but otherwise it just sits.

Is the Classic in decent shape? That'd be fun to have on display in my living room along with the old cameras I have.

What qualifies as "other" Linux/UNIX machines are mostly just PC hardware. There are various Sun, Nextstep, Amiga machines that run proprietary hardware...

To be fair, some people who run Linux/UNIX do not classify their computer as either.

And also, I do know people who's computers are mainly spare parts ... you'd be surprised what mix of "other" they turn out to be.

PC stands for "personal computer". A Mac is a personal computer. Therefore, a mac is a PC. What you really mean is a DOS/Windows-compatible PC, Mac OS PC, or other operating system PC.

Nit, nit, nit.... PC's are generally understood to mean Windows machines Mr. Smarmy-pants.

PC so far, I've always been die hard about PCs and have hated Macs probably since I was about 11. However I'm sad to say that with the fact that every time a new version of Windows comes out it's shittier than the last and crashes more, so I'm tempted to try a Mac next time around.

I have a PC for many-a reasons. When I was in Iraq for the first tour, my friend had a Mac, and she couldn't do any of the Online classes for the Army. Maybe now they've changed it, but she had to have all of the courses sent to her via snail mail.

I like my PC. It's what I've always used, and what I am used to. When my first laptop commited suicide, I needed a new one like NOW. So now I am happy with my Sony Vaio.

I had a no name DOS based desktop.

It died.

I had a Compaq desktop that ran Windows 3.11

It died, though to it's credit, it lasted about 3 years.

I had a Packard Bell desktop.

It died.

I had a Hewlett Packard desktop that ran Windows 98.

Most of the parts of that one are still being used in my ex's upgraded CPU along with newer parts he bought individually.

I had a Compaq laptop that also ran Windows 98.

It died.

I had a Hewlett Packard laptop that ran Windows 98.

It had a factory defect and the entire system crashed shortly after I got it.

Hewlett Packard replaced it with a slightly upgraded model of the same laptop.

It lasted less than a year.

I battled with Best Buy after that and they replaced it under their warranty with a Toshiba Qosmio.

Less than a year later, that started having issues. And died.

Then I got a MacBook.

I love my MacBook.

The End.

To be fair, Phee's studio computer is an upgraded version of a Windows 98 Hewlett Packard (which now runs XP) and my kids have a E-Machine that my parents purchased for themselves in 1999 (but no longer use since they now have a Dell laptop) that has been upgraded, but still runs Windows 98.

Wow. You went through a lot of computers.

Before I owned a computer, I had a webtv. It was nice but I got cut off alot. And every time the phone rang.

My first computer was a Dell desktop. It crashed a year after I bought it and I lost everything. Luckily, my brother had signed me up with the extra warranty and a tech from Dell or whoever they pay came out to my house and replaced the hard drive, mother board and modem. I always get error messages and it is insanely slow. You would have to boot it up and go off and do other stuff before you could do anything with it.

I just gave up and bought a Mac. People have said they are better. They even said Macs don't get trojans or virus'. It is my first lap top and it is awesome. I have had a couple of issues but it could have been user error. I do keep getting that beach ball thing alot. I might have to call them. And the last time I imported a cd in iTunes the cd drive sounded very noisy.

It is kind of ironic but I ordered my Dell online with my brothers Mac. I think it was a G4.

I use a Macbook Pro 17" with 4GB RAM running OSX Leopard at work. Nice machine. :-)

My home computer is a strange evolution.

Initially I started with an HP 752N Desktop. Mini tower configuration... Not a great computer but I got a deal on it... Got an HP 17 inch monitor with it.

Some months later I obtained a used 21" IBM CRT monitor, but to run it I needed a PCI graphics card so i got a Matrox dual head card... I forget the model

Added some RAM

Decided that video performance wasn't very good for my needs so I needed to upgrade video card. Couldn't get a decent PCI card so I got a new tower case, motherboard and a NVidia 6800 GT card and transfered the rest of the "guts" unto that.

Upgraded RAM to 2GB

Added new hardrives after first one died. Managed to get most of data off it first. New = 20GB for system and 200GB for data.

Upgraded processor to 3.0GB P4

DVD drive died... replaced with Sony Dual Layer DVD burner.

Added 300GB Seagate external HD for backup.

Obtained used Lacie 125GB external HD.

After a year with that... Decided current config was too noisy for new (Kentucky) house (Wood floors) and added quiet fans to processor and GPU, along with new case.

Put original HP machine back together with other other HD and sold it. :-)

Time for Frankencomputer: Since OSX was on Intel hardware as of January 06, people had been making hacked versions to work on regular PC hardware. February 07-ish I tried it for myself. After a day's messing around I got it working.

After much experimenting things weren't working great so I reinstalled the system in May using an upgraded version. Took far less time. Just had to make minor fixes to get High-speed USB and networking to work.

System drive filled up quickly. Too quickly... Damn 10.1 MP RAW camera files!!! Performance and reliability suffered a lot. Other problems with 300BG drive had been happening over time... just after New Years a database for my photos got corrupted. Decided I need a lot more harddrive space for current and future needs. Bought two Iomega 750 externals. One for data, one for backup.

Just as I installed the new externals, the 300GB drive crapped out. Fortunately all data on those was backup, not primary. My timing couldn't have been better!! Put all my data from other hardrives back onto 1 750GB drive then backed it up onto the other. 125 GB holds video, downloads, and other stuff I don't care *that* much about.

Adobe CS3 decided to stop running... I know why and you don't need to know. :p

Decided it was time to do a clean install of system and upgrade at the same time. Tried leopard but my hardware doesn't seem to support it very well and install failed. Went back to May install and it worked like a charm. Spent 15 minutes re-enabling USB and networking and I had a nice clean system. Took about 6 hours Friday night getting everything else installed. Now running OSX 10.4.9 on the above mentioned PC hardware. Works fantastic when the system drive isn't full.

All is well. :-)
