PONTIAC, Mich. - Assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian is planning to run for Congress in Michigan. Kevorkian is on parole since being released from prison last year.

He tells The Oakland Press newspaper that he plans to run without party affiliation for the congressional sea now held by Republican Joe Knollenberg.

Kevorkian needs a minimum of 3,000 signatures on nominating petitions to appear as an independent on the November ballot.

The retired pathologist claims to have helped at least 130 people die. He served a prison term for second-degree murder in one man's death.

Gesture politics. Similar to Ralf Nader running with no hope of winning. Raises awareness of certain issues , along with being a tool to raise your public image and the medias focus on you. Although really, winning a seat on the michigan congress isn't all that difficult if you have a well known name and some money. Its not like running for the national congress were the obstacles are enormous.

Hrmm, maybe i should run for office.

I can see it now. The televised debates between Troy and Kevorkian *drumroll pleez*

Troy: "Being goth, I'm into the macabre and dead things."

Jack: "I've killed people before and I'm so old I'm a living corpse."

Troy: "Damn. You win."

Oh man. That'll be the day. Jack will win a seat in Congress. The sad thing about this though is there are probably enough people out there that would sign the ballot so he could be independent. There might also be enough people out there that would actually vote for him. It's not impossible for him to eventually end up in the Michigan Congress. I myself think that Michigan should pass a law that says that a convicted felon cannot hold office. That's the way that it should be.

I used to stand up for what he fought for, the right to die......but he got carried away and did a few to many of those leathal injection shots on people not so bad off towards the end I thought.......

I WOULD NOT VOTE for him I dunno if he is still all there upstairs in his old age and he seems to like the spot light to much, in fact.......personally......I think thats why he is running.

He can't possibly think he has a chance now......?

That very well could be true. After being in jail and not having the spotlight on him for so long, he misses it, and will do anything in his power to get back into it.

yeah they say thats the only reason Nader does his random office-runs as well.

Just to throw it in the pot.. I am on board with the "right to die", although how to actually put it into practice I'm not sure about, seems like a difficult, slippery slope. That's not to say we shouldn't explore the idea, something that is difficult doesnt mean impossible and therefore- do nothing and just nuke another frozen dinner and turn on the tube.

Let me ask you this, Troy. It's just a curious question though, I'm not trying to start arguments here whatsoever. The whole "right to die" thing, do you think that only medical professionals should be able to do so for someone or that people should have the right to take there own lives. I don't think that you are cool with suicide, that's not what I'm saying. But should the person be able to just do it whenever they want to because they don't want to live anymore , or do you think that they should be deathly ill to where the quality of life is so bad, that it doesn't really make sense for them to be alive anymore.
