soothsayer
If you can go upstairs and camp out in the kitchen with the stove on or something. I hope the stove is electric but if not just be careful and get some heat in that room. If I could help you I would but my hands are tied. I've been in bad situations before and almost froze to death.

LuluVox
Get your ass outta the basement. Drink hot beverages. I hope you have a hat on (I'm sure your mother taught you that most of your body heat escapes through your head, right?) and something on your feet. At this point, layers of clothing + blankets are your best friend. Bundle up, baby. Also, I'd watch it with the stove... it could cause some serious damage to the ceiling of the kitchen... and besides, stoves are weird anyway; I'd hate to hear that you carbon-monoxided yourself to death whilst trying not to freeze to death. That's not to say I wouldn't have a little chuckle about the irony, but... you know. Dying is bad. Stay alive. As Morrissey said (and I know how much you love Morrissey!), "just do your best and don't worry". AN EDIT FOR YOU! Oh, and also... if you can light a few candles, that actually might help, too. Just don't go crazy and burn the place down.

And for pity's sake, find his GF's house and pitch a fit or just look for another apartment and bail on his ass. Or call the furnace guy and charge your roomate. ;P

Soulrev
Might want to look into your local laws and see what your rights are as a tenant.. I think in most places if your landlord fails to make necessary repairs after you have consulted him/her so many times, you have the right to terminate the lease contract or call a repairman and deduct it from your monthly rent.. All depends though.. Check this place out, helped me out some time back when I had landlord problems - http://www.badlandlords.info/cgi-bin/BLF/YaBB.cgi Personally I say go get his couch, bring it downstairs and light it on fire.. Tell him you were cold Lol

Black Sunday
thanks for the suggestions everybody! the other guy that lives here came home (he was supposed to be away for the weekend) and brought me a space heater! So I was warm all night! I insisted he use it since it was his but he is a hardcore christian and gave it to me. his name is jason.... so jason calls up the homeowner and he too asks him to come home and take care of this problem. the homeowner got pissed at him and when he finally came home at 2 AM he was pissed at both of us for bothering him about the furnace, he said it wasn't a big deal and to just wear eaxtra clothes. can you believe that? we are freezing and he is mad at us for bugging him about it. well i still have this awesome space heater so I'm fine. I found out from Jason that this isn'tthefirst time this happened, it happened in the dead of winter and it was 25 degrees outside! and the furnace didn't get fixed for 3 days......I'm glad I wasn't there for that one. I know you're not supposed to sleep in extreme cold conditions i was just unsure at what point it would be too cold.

Fierce Critter
On December 4, 2002, we ran out of propane, which fueled the only heater in the ancient house we were living in Lillington, NC, the first house we lived in when we moved here (an in-wall heater that heats the whole house, not a little portable unit). We were supposed to close on a house purchase on December 6, so we were gonna run electric heaters & let the electric oven run here and there until we closed and not pay to have a bunch of propane delivered that we weren't going to use past 1 day. Then on the 5th, the ice storm hit. And the electricity went out. So Jon's at work, and I'm using our limited-minutes Tracphone to figure out if our closing is going to go down on the 6th. And I'm only getting busy signals and answering machines. You see, if it even gets to about 40 degrees, businesses start closing. Major ice storm with lots of trees falling on wires means EVERYTHING SHUTS DOWN. Including realtors & lawyers offices. So I spend the day with the animals in the truck with me (just a dog & 1 cat at that time), driving around trying to stay warm in the truck with the heater going. I stop in at Jon's business where they let me use an office & phone to try to get into contact with the realtor. I finally go camp out on the doorstep of the realtor's office, waiting for them to open up. Once they do, they try to figure out what's going to happen. Long story short, closing AIN'T gonna happen on the 6th. And the way things are going, looks like it ain't gonna happen until after the weekend. NOT GOOD. So the night of the 5th, we go to bed in a ton of clothes, with every blanket & large towel available on the bed, and we snuggle together TIGHT with the dog & cat under the covers with us. If the rabbit wasn't so darned squiggly, he'd be in there, too. It's a fucking NIGHTMARE. Most uncomfortable night I've ever spent in my life. Luckily, by the next day, they find a different lawyer to do our closing, and we manage to get it done by 7:00 at night. We move only the bed & some necessary clothes/toiletries over to the new house and enjoy the luxury of central heating. NO heat sucks. MAJOR. Get all over your landlord's ass - and good luck to you. People really do freeze to death in their sleep right here in our lovely state. Your landlord is a real ass and it is a good thing you are going to get out of there.
