How Old Were You When You Were Allowed To Wear Make-up?

Recommended Posts

I wasn't allowed to wear eye make-up until I was about 15. I could wear lightly tinted gloss and a little blush. I wore it when I went out because we would sneak into the bathroom's of wherever we went and put it on. That was when Maybelline black eyebrow pencils were used as eye liner and lit with a lighter, hehe. There was never a shortage of girls in the bathroom at Riverside wiping our faces before our parents picked us up. :) That was before make-up remover was as popular as it is today, haha.

Well, ever since I was 5 I've taken dance lessons, and I got to wear make-up for the recitals, which I used to think was the coolest thing ever.

So I've had my own make-up since I was 5, and my mom didn't really want me wearing it, but I'd sneak in a little here or there whenever I could. When I was in 5th grade my friends and I would sneak it into school in our purses and put it on in the bathroom, quite badly in retrospect. My mom found out pretty soon, of course, and at that point I think she just stopped fighting with me about and let me wear it, which I did, all the way through high school.

Then once I got to college I got burned out on it, and stopped wearing it, except for special occasions, and then it was only very small amounts. I was that way until about 2 years ago, when I started experimenting again. Now I like to experiment, but I still don't wear it every day. I do play with colors now, where as 5 years ago I never wore anything but a little black eyeliner and mascara.

I can't even remember when I first started wearing make up.. I remember my mom buying me cheap stuff to play with when I was lil, but if I had to guess I would say around 5th or 6th grade is when I started to get into it with some of my other friends. High school I wore it all the time and even got pretty outrageous with it.. lol Nothing like neon green glitter eyeliner and green hair to put the teachers in a tiff..

I'm allowed to wear make up!?

Hahaha..

Seriously though, I was never interested in make up so I never had the discussion of when I could or couldn't wear it.

However with my oldest daughter I told her she could start wearing it when she's 13. Same will go for my youngest.

I really can't remember a specific "you can wear makeup now" moment. I'm sure I was wearing it a little by 14. Full-on by high school.

Jr. year is when I went new wave. So I would often dress in "themes," and would do things like face painting to match. Like, a Star Trek t-shirt with far-out bracelets, E.T. and spacemen earrings, and I'd put stars, a Saturn and moon on my cheek.

I still have my stencils & face-make-up. Yes, they actually intentionally sold stuff to do that to yourself in the 80's. :) And I did, to the hilt.

i never wanted to wear make up so i am not sure when my mom would have "let" me since i didn't want to do it anyways.

i didn't start wearing any til i was 18 and only when i went to city club. and that was usually just lipstick, maybe eyeliner. but nothing else.

i think when i was somewhere between 25-27 i started to wear it more often. some lipstick, eyeshadow. maybe even mascara? can't remember exactly when i started to wear that.

now at 33 i wear it every time i "go out" because i just need to! but often it is just cover up kind of stuff. i don't normally wear lipstick or anything like that- just stuff to cover up the darkness around my eyes, powder and face "tint".

i know my 6 year old will want to wear it young. i will probably let her wear SOME when she is 14/in highschool.
