Pants-haters club

Recommended Posts

I am hating pants/slacks so bad right now.

I like myself in shorts (wear jean shorts almost exclusively). And like myself even better in short, tight skirts with some kind of tights or fishnets.

But man, I am hating myself in pants right now.

Got that problematic disproportional belly. So if I wear straight-leg pants, that pretty much means the ankle area will be freakin voluminous. But if I wear tapered pants that make me look good from the knee down, I look like some kind of upside-down triangle freak with my larger midsection emphasized by the smallness of my calf knee-to-ankle area.

Sigh. What to do except pray that warm weather takes hold sooner so I can stay in shorts?

Most pants are uncomfortable too. I hate uncomfortable clothes.

I think I need to get some really thick tights and layer them so I can still wear skirts when it's chilly. I hate my weekday clothes lately. I don't feel good in them. They are no fun.

I'm still remembering that post where you said you wanted to wear fun clothes and eat fun food. heh. Me too. Gonna buy a few accesories, drag out everything I own and see if I can piece together some fun looks.

Lately I've been stuck in those flarish type pants - those are fine for everyday wear but I am picky as hell. Most of my clothes I have I can't do much with except tear them apart and reconstruct them how I see fit. I just wish I had a bigger better sewing machine.

But capris will do the trick - the ones I have look like army style and their the longer straight leg version but they still look like they do some weird looking bell thing at the ends of them.. And tank tops. I don't know how you feel about wearing those, I know I hated them till someone bought me a pair once as a gift. It took me two weeks to get used to them but they grew on me.

Tank tops - I want to wear them, and will go ahead and steel myself and buy them once in a while when I see a cute one that at least wears loose at the bottom so I can cover the tummy bulge.

But what always ends up happening is, I might be brave enough to bare my fat upper-arms once in them, then end up not being able to deal with how I look if I catch myself in a mirror out in public and I never wear them again.

I'm punk when I go out at night. But during the day in the summer, I live in cuffed jean shorts, moccasins or sandals & loose, billowy peasant or babydoll tops over sports bras. I get asked when my "baby" is due a lot in the babydoll tops, but I dont' care - I look cute in them, and am comfortable.

Funny that I can deal with my legs exposed in shorts, but just can't find a totally flattering cut of pants. I thought I looked good yesterday in my tight stretch Dickies-style black pants with my red hi-tops and a red t-shirt. But my husband, bless his heart, pointed out the upside-down triangle thing when I asked him how I looked, and I felt like a shlub all over again. :unhappy

And I don't hold it against him, 'cause he's absolutely right.

Sigh.

I like flare or boot cut capri pants. If I wear long pants, they have to be a flare leg or bell bottom. I just tried on bremuda shorts, only to find that they make my athletic-type legs look fat. Won't be buying them anytime soon. Short shorts (NOT daisy dukes) look best on me. God forbid if my pants/shorts/capris don't have some form of stretch! They have to have some give or you get a humongous crotch wedgie.

I should know this I guess, being from the south, but what's the difference in short shorts and daisy dukes?

Daisy dukes are name after a character, I believe.

I refuse to wear either one, I'm a capri kind of grrl instead.

but just my two cents...

That'd be a Trans-Maro. You know - pieced together from closely matching bits and pices of Trans Ams and Camaros - generally in different colors, the most popular being white & blue.

You're right, silly me...the "trans-maro."

So, I found some pants that I think do me some justice.

Ross & TJ Maxx came in very handy. First, I picked up a pair of Levi's bootcut stretch jeans in a nice, dark blue. Thing is, I bought them in a size too small. They're a tad tight around the belly - I have to sit up REALLY straight in the carseat. But the stretch material allows them to fit tighter to my body in the right places without a huge "Titanic Funnel" effect at the bottom. Maybe some crunches will help me tighten the belly enough that the waistband won't be quite so constricting.

I wanted something in black, too. So I hit up a couple more Ross & TJ Maxx stores in the city, figuring I'd get a duplicate pair of these and dye them (the initial Ross store I went to was out of them in my size). Instead, I found this great pair of Zana-Di (Jr. Plus clothes in great, trendy styles) stretch black twill jeans. They fit as well as the Levis', actually a tiny bit better in the waistband (yet are the same size). I have to shorten them, but that's easier than dying the Levi's. They are nice low-riders (which nobody will ever see 'cause I don't tuck in my shirts or wear midriffs), and have eyelets for lacing all the way from ankle to waistline on both legs. I'm thinking about replacing the suede lacing already there with silver chain (cheap by the foot from Lowe's).

Cool thing is, I paid $10.99 for the Levi's, and $10.00 for the Zana-Di's. LOVE Ross & TJ Maxx.

Anyway, I'm not 100% happy - I still like myself better in tapered pants 'cause my legs from mid thigh to ankle are actually pretty decently sized. But I don't want that upside-down triangle effect anymore.

I guess the style must work on me. I went out with Jon Saturday night, and he kept running ahead of me so he could look back and watch me walk-up in those jeans. =)

Firece Critter: You and I are at totally opposite sides of the spectrum. I LOVE pants, I refuse to wear shorts. yet I'll wear a short skirt, no problem (( although I prefer a long, manskirt ;D )).

Anywho, I'd also suggest finding a pair of pants that flare out at the bottom. They look really cute and can help get rid of the "off-balance" look. Wearing flared jeans with a nice pair of sports-type shoes or boots makes for an adorable look. Also, when I buy a pair of pants, I always make sure that the size is AT LEAST one size bigger than what I normally wear, just for comfort, because pants shrink and get tighter over time. So I buy them one size bigger to ensure that the time between purchase and the time to chop them up is longer.

(( Yes, I've chopped up 2 pairs of pants and made waist-wrap out of them..... oO talk about boredom ))
