OK... I'm not expecting discussion about Toby Keith and other musical abominations like that.

So first... The Man in Black. Johnny Cash. They guy is probably more goth then not. Some really great tunes... and awful ones, too.

A fave:

And I think many know of my love for Neko Case's work... Amazing voice and often haunting lyrics.

Garage Country... Heh.. Southern Culture on the Skids:

I really honestly overall hate country music. Most of that dislike is due to the instrumentations (steel guitar? UGH), and the oft-repeated subject matter (too much about drinking, divorce, dead mothers who talk to their children, etc.). But part of that is also honestly due to my near total immersion in the rural southern lower-class lifestyle when we lived in NC between 2002 and 2005. I also want to clarify that I don't take an elitist position in saying "country music sucks." I think a lot of it is really good songs by great voices & instrumentalists. It's just a sound that doesn't work for my ear personally.

But I will be honest and cop to liking the following:

kd lang

Lyle Lovett

A song or two from Randy Travis

A minimal tolerance for Alison Krauss (the baby-voice bothers me no matter what style of music, but some of her songs are good)

A song or two from Garth Brooks - barely

Just about any Johnny Cash I hear

Jon does like country music enough to listen to country stations when I'm not in a vehicle with him. He plays some of this sort of thing on the MP3 player in the evenings, which is the only way I really get exposed to it. Otherwise, I just don't go there.

I have a few country performers that I have thoroughly enjoyed through the years. Johnny Cash, Freddy Fender, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Jim Reeves, Tammy Wynette, Crystal Gayle, Conway Twitty, Kenny Rogers and Patsy Cline. They are mainly from the 70's and prior. I can't stand this country/pop style music fused together, it makes me irate.

My dad raised me on old country. I love the old Hank and really enjoy Hank III. I've bought my dad two new CDs over Christmas, the Hank Williams show and I've got a brand new girlfriend. For me listening to country music is as much being a part of my dad as it is finding songs I enjoy rocking out to. "It's songs about Me"

Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, The Carter Family, Jimmy Rodgers, Gene Autry, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Bob Wills, Ernest Tubbs... basically a lot of the stuff from the 30s to the 60s. Also dig Willie Nelson, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Sleepy LaBeef, and David Allan Coe. And then there's western swing and bluegrass!

Hank Williams, Jr.

Gotta have me some "Family Tradition"

And who said that Toby Keith was a musical abomination. I will just have to bring some of his music to our little camping trip won't I? LOL!

Uhhhmmm...I'll take note to reserve your tent lot as far away from mine as I can .

Bump. :) Necro time!! I happened across this one while searching for the "Theme Song" thread for Der Nister. No dice on that-- does anyone know where the feck it's hiding??

I'm a huge Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow, Dolly Parton, Iris Dement, Bonnie Raitt, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells, Lynn Anderson, Linda Ronstadt fan..

..and that's just a few of the ladies. Will add to it, as I think of more. My list of many country gents will follow soon. I'm a bit busy. ;)

I love me some Johnny.

I've always considered Johnny Cash to be in his own category. He really never fit with the rest.

Here here...I also love some Rockabilly, which isn't quite country or rock...Horrorpops, Necromantix (RIP Andy :cry:grouphug) and the Quakes.

Hmmm...oughtta be a separate thread for rockabilly. Quite a few contemporary rockabilly artists who throw in that old country/honky-tonk/western swing style into their tunes.
