You don't have to look hard to find lupin references in anime. FLCL had a nice nod to it in the last episode.

Oh I know, the mix of Lupin's badassery with teh funny and also the oldness of the show definately makes it in the top 5 of all time classics, therefore, is referenced a bunch in several places. The Cowboy Bebop one though just happens to be one of the most distinct Lupin references and one of the more well-known ones. Of course, some of the newer or less well-rounded anime fans sometimes don't know this.

Man, I miss Lupin. I used to come home and fall asleep drunk watching that at 4am when they used to have it on late night (rather early morning) Adult Swim.

I highly recommend Hellsing. I've only seen the first 3 episodes, but definitely plan to continue, just haven't got around to it yet. It's pretty damn wicked.

Just saw Dead Leaves a few weeks ago, it was pretty good.. funny as hell... definitely done for/by the ADHD generation though. Loved the guy w/the giant drill for a johnson.

I like dubs better than subtitles. When I run them both together, the dub translation is almost always... hmm... richer than the subtitles. Only exception I can think of is FLCL, where the two often seem completely unrelated... especially in the little intro/coda voiceover bits.

Haven't seen Death Note, don't plan to... read the first couple episodes of the manga in Shonen Jump, and the main character was so godawful annoying I lost interest immediately. My criteria for being engaged by fictional characters is whether they'd be fun to party with, or at least have over for cocktails & dinner... and Light is such an insufferable little prig, I just can't see it.

Actually, in the anime, he's a very dynamic and clever character. He pretty much makes the show. Ryuk is also pretty compelling, but Light is the best.

Hellsing, when you get to the end since I have the series and have seen it a billion times, will disappoint you. BUT as I say to everyone who sees it, they ARE continuing the series and it will be out fairly soon from what I hear (2-3 episodes have already been leaked on Teh Internetz).

I will say that, for the record, the best end all be all anime of all time is Serial Experiments: Lain. It is single handedly the deepest most philasophical (omfg...I'm so old I butchered that spelling SO bad) anime, not even just anime but work of art, that you will EVER see in your life. If you didn't like it, you were dumb and didn't get it. Sorry, but that's the truth. It's the only anime that I can actually say changed the structural integrity of the INSIDE OF MY BRAIN and actually explained the universe in complete clarity.

Everyone who is alive and existant (or non-existant...yes...non-existant) needs to see it.

You know I really enjoyed School Days the story line is ok(high school setting, the guy basically wants every girl in the show and actually gets them).. but the ending is so wicked!!! My jaw dropped when it ended it was disturbing.

Right now I'm watching a few things Claymore is pretty interesting as well as Vampire Knight. I heard Death Note is due for a movie ^_^. Also NAna i loved, Okane Ga Nai, School Rumble (it's so funny)... the list goes on.. Absolute Boyfriend the drama I really enjoyed. There is too many of them that I have watched I cant remember anymore lol.

death notes has 3 movies out in japan.

Including live action versions. Its also causing problems in schools around the world as kids are creating their own Death Notes. And of course once they have a Death Note they start writing names in it. As soon as a teacher gets hold of one of those... well schools get shut down for a while.

Have you ever seen Akira? Yes, in three incarnations: Streamline subbed, Streamline Dubbed, and the Pioneer release.

Any particular genre you into? Action/adventure, Drama, and the introspective stuff. Though I am not above the occasional fan-service type shows.

Did you ever get into any of the T.V. series like Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Inu-Yasha? Much older stuff. like:

*Star Blazers (aka UchΕ« Senkan Yamato (1973)

*Battle of the Planets (Kagaku Ninjatai Gatchaman, (1972), before Gundam, before any team-centered anime, before mecha shows (Gundam came out in 1978, Eva in 1995), *this* show started all of those genres)

*Speed Racer (Mach a Go-go-go (1966))

*Galaxy Express 999 (Ginga Tetsudō 999 (999 is said as "three-nine,") (1977))

*Black Jack ((1973) (the creator, Dr. Osamu Tezuka (who created Astro Boy as well,) *was* a real physician drawing anime, and is known as the father of manga.))

*And the list could go on, but those are the ones that made me appreciate anime.

Yes, most of these titles are old, the animation may be poor resolution (by today standards,) but the attention to detail in the animation (compared to the US stuff during those times,) and plots were outstanding. All of the titles (aside from Black Jack, which I discovered in 2002,) were integral in my childhood in one form or the other.

Do you prefer Manga/Anime over Westernized comics/cartoons? for the most part. I do like Batman Titles, Usagi Yojimbo (drawn by an American Stan Sakai,) and a few independent ones. For me, a lot of the US shows lack a certain depth of heart

Are you into any other Japanese things as well? Culture, sushi, and some of the live action movies, have read a few translated books (Battle Royale is out in paperback in the US, it makes the movie look like fun-time in a kindergarten class...wow.) Been trying to learn more Japanese, but time and lack of a good instructor is making things difficult.
