hey... don't make fun of me! i do this all the time. i won't even stop for troy spiral. it adds to my random randomness.

and i won't capitalize, not even *i*. unless i am emphasizing a point or something like that...

if i was writing an email or a handwritten letter, that would be different.

when chatting or texting or posting - those rules do NOT apply for me. ;)

yeah i like to use "-" a lot too.

You are doomed. That is all.

But to be honest, I really don't mean to do it. It's a force of habit. I use "..." as a moment of silence between one line and the next. Sure a "," works best, but I like to animate that comma a little more by using "...". I have done it for so long, it's become apart of my daily routine. I honestly don't think I can't stop doing it. :/

Ditto.

Aw, come on... I'm not on here complaining about the constant misuse of apostrophes (ironically, there's even one in a post in this thread)! So allow me my little affectation!

HELPFUL GRAMMAR HINTS, aka Hille the Pedantic Know-it-All's Pet Grammar Peeves:

1. An apostrophe is NEVER used with a plural. EVER. Doesn't matter what letter the word ends with. i.e. "two bra's"= WRONG. "two bras" is correct.

2. Affect is a verb, effect is a noun.

3. "I can ACCEPT anything EXCEPT shitty grammar"

4. "Its" is the exception to the apostrophe/possessive rule. "It's OK, the cat ate its babies because they were deformed"

5. If you can count it, there are FEWER. If you can't count it, there's LESS: Fewer Dilaudids, less heroin. Thus, "less people" is never correct.

---I'd just like to point out that effect can be used as a verb as well:

1. I affected the situation. - I altered the situation

2. I effected the situation. - I caused the situation.

I agree that most people don't use it correctly, though. It's really irritating trying to puzzle out the meaning of someone's input when their syntax and vocabulary don't mesh.

(sorry everyone, just another vocab junkie putting in his two cents)

Take a few extra seconds to at least attempt to use proper punctuation. Putting (...) at the end of every phrase or sentence is not proper punctuation.

And if we were posting in anything other than a forum, i'd agree with you. :p Personally, i write conversationally in a forum much like the way i speak. Artistically and visually speaking, ellipses show you pauses in internet speech in a form where you can see them......because you certainly can't HEAR them! :p i understand griping about the nasty spelling ive seen around here, the incomprehensible grammar, the complete lack of periods or commas. But the rest? Chalk it up to aesthetics. I quite nearly have a master's degree in writing. I know where the periods, commas, and ellipses go. But I also know a bit about writing for your audience and surroundings. Just because I know how to write like an academe, doesnt mean its appropriate or comfortable here.

.....and dont pick on my fucking ellipses! i loves them! :p :p :p

Umm, seriously... it's just a forum. Those of you who insist upon perfection should go back to writing your Ph.D. theses while I can haz cheezeburgerz.

No. It isn't just a forum, it's a place where we communicate. If you want someone to read your topic, use an accurate title and write in decent language. I'm not insisting on perfection, I'm insisting on legibility.

Hey, I do try. I think my grammar is rather exceptional in my opinion. But there are times where my shift button seems to be working but doesn't capitalize when I need it, thus creating lower cases at the beginning of a sentence. That annoys me.

I use spellcheck whenever I see a red underline (unless not applicable, i.e.; "spellcheck").

But "...", I'm sorry, that's been apart of my life for years now. It'll be like quitting crack cold turkey, sure I might be fine within the next 10 minutes, but if I don't use it after that ten minutes I'll end up on the floor lying in a pool of my own drool looking like a "The Ring" reject.

I do on occasion enjoy going completely overboard when saying something, particularly when I am aiming for comedic effect. Primarily I do this when I intend to point out through parody and light hearted sarcasm that something has reached a point of ridiculousness. It is because of this, that I oppose a mandate prohibiting such behavior. While the purpose of this board is to communicate, sometimes it requires parody and absurdity to fully illustrate a point and I shall not cease to do so.

I'm not saying that my sentence structure or grammar are perfect (or even close to) outside of that, just that I am going to occasionally go over the top when the moment deems it necessary.

Yeah, and what are we going to do with a disorderly poster early in the morning?

Put him in a bed with the Captain's daughter?

Besides, if I have to be nearly perfect in my posts, then I'm not going to post as much.

Having a sensible title for a post, or taking an extra minute to format your post so it doesn't look like garbage is an appreciated trait.

The hard part is getting people to actually show up on DGN and post at all. We have to wrist-slap people for a really large number of things as it is. If we had to also enforce formatting of posts rules the DGN Nazi Mods would probably have scared away many of our best posters at the outset. Many of whom started out as horrible post-formatters and have since improved greatly.

As soon as you try to enforce some rule or even hint that maybe someone could improve their DGN activity in some way, they tend to take offense and just leave rather than fix the problem. So you have to pick and choose which things are essential and which things are better left alone. Its a difficult balance.

I'm not that hot on spelling or grammar.

but what really urks me is when:

person X uses txt speak on a forum.

mod A informs said person X to utilise the full keyboard he has, as there are no character limits, not annoying auto complete

person X throws a hissy fit claiming dyslexia

mod a informs person x that he is dyslexic and needs full semblance of the word for him to skim on his patrol of the board

NASA reports earth has yet another satellite as person X spits the dummy.

mod A says "you are the weakest link, into the spacktardis of to mickeys with ye!".

technically if you understand what the words are, even with bad grammer, then its all for looks. if i wrote a word down with the wrong spelling. but you understood it. but still get pissed of that its spelled bad,

perhaps everyone has a problem with lack of perfection.

fail.

takes me a second or two to decipher each word. i read by pattern not by letter.

if it don't fit the pattern in my head it doesn't compute. but the pattern can be mirrored or inverted and my brain will read it just the same as its standardised form.

i've been known when note taking tired to write left handed and mirror all letters and words, and form the notes right to left, and not even realise i've done so for days untill i loan my noted out to another
