AND THE BAND PLAYED WALTZING MATILDA

(various artists)

When I was a young man I carried my pack

And I lived the free life of a rover

From the Murrays green basin to the dusty outback

I waltzed my Matilda all over

Then in nineteen fifteen my country said Son

It's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to be done

So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun

And they sent me away to the war

And the band played Waltzing Matilda

As we sailed away from the quay

And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the cheers

We sailed off to Gallipoli

How well I remember that terrible day

How the blood stained the sand and the water

And how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay

We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter

Johnny Turk he was ready, he primed himself well

He chased us with bullets, he rained us with shells

And in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hell

Nearly blew us right back to Australia

But the band played Waltzing Matilda

As we stopped to bury our slain

We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs

Then we started all over again

Now those that were left, well we tried to survive

In a mad world of blood, death and fire

And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive

But around me the corpses piled higher

Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over tit

And when I woke up in my hospital bed

And saw what it had done, I wished I was dead

Never knew there were worse things than dying

For no more I'll go waltzing Matilda

All around the green bush far and near

For to hump tent and pegs, a man needs two legs

No more waltzing Matilda for me

So they collected the cripples, the wounded, the maimed

And they shipped us back home to Australia

The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane

Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla

And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay

I looked at the place where my legs used to be

And thank Christ there was nobody waiting for me

To grieve and to mourn and to pity

And the band played Waltzing Matilda

As they carried us down the gangway

But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared

Then turned all their faces away

And now every April I sit on my porch

And I watch the parade pass before me

And I watch my old comrades, how proudly they march

Reliving old dreams of past glory

And the old men march slowly, all bent, stiff and sore

The forgotten heroes from a forgotten war

And the young people ask, "What are they marching for?"

And I ask myself the same question

And the band plays Waltzing Matilda

And the old men answer to the call

But year after year their numbers get fewer

Some day no one will march there at all

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda

Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me

And their ghosts may be heard as you pass the Billabong

Who'll come-a-waltzing Matilda with me?

Down From Dover, by Dolly Parton

I know this dress I'm wearing

Doesn't hide the secret I have tried concealing

When he left, he promised me

That he'd be back by the time it was revealing

The sun behind a cloud just casts

A crawling shadow o'er the fields of clover

And time is running out for me

I wish that he would hurry down from Dover

He's been gone so long

When he left the snow was deep upon the ground

And I have seen a spring and summer pass

And now the leaves are turning brown

And any time, a tiny face will show itself

Cause waiting's almost over

But I won't have a name to give it

If he doesn't hurry down from Dover

From Dover, from Dover

My folks weren't understanding

When they found out, they sent me from the home place

My Daddy said, if folks found out

He'd be ashamed to ever show his face

My Mama said, I was a fool

And she did not believe it when I told her

Mama, everything's gonna be all right

Soon he will be coming down from Dover

I've found a place to stay out on the farm

Takin' care of an old lady

She never asked me nothin'

So, I never talked to her about my baby

I sent a message to my Mom

With a name and address of Miss L. Grover

And to make sure he got that information

When he came down from Dover

I loved him more than anything

And I could not refuse him when he needed me

He was the only one I'd loved

And I just can't believe that he was using me

He wouldn't leave me here like this

I know it can't be, so it can't be over

He wouldn't make me go through this alone

He'll be coming down from Dover

My body aches the time is here

It's lonely in this place where I'm lyin'

Our baby has been born but something's wrong

It's much too still, I hear no cryin'

I guess in some strange way

She knew she'd never have a father's arms to hold her

So dying was her way of telling me

He wasn't coming down from Dover

From Dover, from Dover

Down from Dover

Darcy Farrow, by John Denver

Where the walker runs down to the Carson Valley Plain

There lived a maiden, Darcy Farrow was her name

The daughter of old Dundee and a fair one was she

The sweetest flower that bloomed oer the range

Her voice was as sweet as the sugar candy

Her touch was as soft as a bed of goose down

Her eyes shone bright like the pretty lights

That shone in the night out of Yerrington town

She was courted by Young Vandamere

A fine lad was he as I am to hear

He gave her silver rings and lacy things

And she promised to wed before the snows came that year

But her pony did stumble and she did fall

Her dyin touched the hearts of us one and all

Young Vandy in his pain put a bullet through his brain

And we buried them together as the snows began to fall

They sing of Darcy Farrow where the Truckee runs through

They sing of her beauty in Virginia City too

At dusky sundown to her name they drink a round

And to young Vandy whose love was true

Old Shep, by Red Foley

When I was a lad

And old Shep was a pup

Over hills and meadows we'd stray

Just a boy and his dog

We were both full of fun

We grew up together that way

I remember the time at the old swimmin' hole

When I would have drowned beyond doubt

But old Shep was right there

To the rescue he came

He jumped in and then pulled me out

As the years fast did roll

Old Shep he grew old

His eyes were fast growing dim

And one day the doctor looked at me and said

I can do no more for your dog

With hands that were trembling

I picked up my gun

And aimed it at Shep's faithful head

I just couldn't do it

I wanted to run

I wish they would shoot me instead

He came to my side

And looked up at me

And laid his old head on my knee

I had struck the best friend that a man ever had

I cried so I scarcely could see

Old Shep he has gone

Where the good doggies go

And no more with old Shep will I roam

But if dogs have a heaven

There's one thing I know

Old Shep has a wonderful home.

I don't cry......... Simple as that.. Last time I cried was when I found out a very close friend of mine put a gun under his chin and pulled the trigger. But other than that I really don't cry. To explain it via lyrics from a distillers song.. " I take a scar every tiem I cry cause it aint my style no it aint my style!...

But anyways a certain song that can make me sad is Elliott Smith's I didn't understand

Thought you'd be looking for the last in line to love then ignore

Put out and put awayAnd so youd soon be leaving me alone like Im supposed to be, tonight,

Tomorrow and everydayTheres nothing here that youll miss

I can guarantee you this, is a cloud of smoke

Trying to occupy space

What a fucking joke

What a fucking joke

I waited for a bus to separate the both of us and take me off far away

From you cos my feelings never change a bit I always feel like shit i

Dont know why I guess that I just do

You once talked to me about love and you painted pictures of

A never-neverland and I couldve gone to that place

But I didnt understand

I didnt understand

I didnt understand

Crying Steel Guitar Waltz, (originally written by Hank Snow, but re-recorded by Kitty Wells and many others)

The steel guitar played when I met him,

And it played the night I lost him--

Yes, you drove him to another with your sweet Hawaiian charms

I know your sorry, but it's too late now,

and I know you meant no harm;

But the waltz that you were playin' drove him to another's arms

So cry, steel guitar,

Cry on;

You're cryin' cause you know that he is gone.

Gone with another

And I'm all alone,

So cry, steel guitar cry on!

MAD WORLD

-any version-

All around me are familiar faces

Worn out places

Worn out faces

Bright and early for their daily races

Going no where

Going no where

Their tears are filling up their glasses

No expression

No expression

Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow

No tomorrow

No tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny

I find it kind of sad

The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had

I find it hard to tell you

I find it hard to take

When people run in circles it's a very very

Mad world

Mad world

Mad world

Mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good

Happy birthday

Happy birthday

And to feel the way that every child should

Sits and listen

Sits and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous

No one knew me

No one knew me

Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson

Look right through me

Look right through me

And I find it kind of funny

I find it kind of sad

The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had

I find it hard to tell you

'Cos I find it hard to take

When people run in circles it's a very very

Mad world

Mad world

Mad World

Mad world

And I find it kind of funny

I find it kind of sad

The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had

I find it hard to tell you

'Cos I find it hard to take

When people run in circles it's a very very

Mad world

Mad world

Enlarging your world

Mad world

You're Only Lonely, by J.D. Souther

WHEN THE WORLD IS READY TO FALL ON YOUR LITTLE SHOULDERS,

AND WHEN YOU'RE FEELING LONELY AND SMALL,

YOU NEED SOMEBODY THERE TO HOLD YOU.

YOU CAN CALL OUT MY NAME...WHEN YOU'RE ONLY LONELY,

NOW, DON'T YOU EVER BE ASHAMED, YOU'RE ONLY LONELY,

WHEN YOU NEED SOMEBODY AROUND ON THE NIGHTS THAT TRY YOU,

(REMEMBER) I WAS THERE WHEN YOU WERE A QUEEN,

AND I'LL BE THE LAST ONE THERE BESIDE YOU.

SO YOU CAN CALL OUT MY NAME...WHEN YOU'RE ONLY LONELY.

NOW, DON'T YOU EVER BE ASHAMED, YOU'RE ONLY LONELY,

WHEN THE WORLD IS READY TO FALL ON YOUR LITTLE SHOULDERS,

AND WHEN YOU'RE FEELING LONELY AND SMALL,

YOU NEED SOMEBODY THERE TO HOLD YOU.

SO DON'T YOU EVER BE ASHAMED, YOU'RE ONLY LONELY.

AH, YOU CAN CALL OUT MY NAME...WHEN YOU'RE ONLY LONELY,

WHEN YOU'RE ONLY LONELY...

AH, IT'S NO CRIME...DARLING, WE'VE GOT LOTS OF TIME.

AH, THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU...

DARLING, I GET LONELY, TOO.

SO IF YOU NEED ME, ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS CALL ME.

YOU'RE ONLY LONELY

Corey's Coming

by Harry Chapin

Old John Joseph was a man with two first names

They left him in the railroad yard when they took away the trains

Only one run a week comes on roaring down that line

So all he's got to worry 'bout is time.

I come by in the evening to hear 'bout where he's been

He says - Come on sit down Kid, where shall I begin?

He starts telling me the stories of the glories of his past

But he always saves the story of his Corey for the last.

And he says - My Corey's coming. No more sad stories coming

My midnight-moonlight-morning-glory's coming aren't you girl?

And like I told you, when she holds you

She enfolds you in her world.

I was quite surprised to find out all the places that he knew

And so I asked the townfolk if his stories were true

They said - Old John was born here, he's lived here all his life

He's never had a woman, let alone a wife.

And very soon you'll find out as you check around

That no one named Corey's ever lived in this town

So I chided the old man 'bout the truth that I had heard

He smiled and said - Reality is only just a word.

I came by one evening but he did not hear my shout

I looked in the window and saw the fire was out

When he would not wake up I forced in the door

And found that Old John Joseph would tell stories no more.

The scene at the graveyard, three of us were there

Me and the gravedigger heard the parson's prayer

He said - We need not grieve for this man,

For we know that God cares!

They put the cold dirt over him and left me on my own

And when at last I looked up I saw I was not alone

So I said - If you're a relative, he had a peaceful end.

She said - My name is Corey - you can say I'm just a friend.

Corey's coming, no more sad stories coming

My midnight-moonlight-morning-glory's coming aren't you girl?

And like I told you, when she holds you

She enfolds you in her world.

So that's the old man's story, I'm glad you came tonight

A busted down old railroad yard sure makes a lonely sight

You may wonder why a young man would work out here alone

Well the job pays enough to keep some flesh on my bones.

And I confess I get to missing the old man a bit

And there's one other reason I guess I should admit -

Can't you see my Corey's coming, no more sad stories coming

My midnight-moonlight-morning-glory's coming aren't you girl?

And like he told me, when she holds me

She enfolds me in her world.

Ol' Harry had a knack for this stuff...

The Shortest Story

by Harry Chapin

I am born today.

The sun burns a promise in my eye.

Momma strikes me

And I draw a breath and cry.

Above me a cloud softly

Tumbles through the sky.

I am glad...to be alive.

It is my seventh day.

I taste the hunger and I cry.

My brother and sister

Cling to Momma's side.

She squeezes her breast

But it has nothing to provide.

Someone weeps;

I fall asleep.

It is twenty days today.

Momma does not hold me anymore.

I open my mouth,

But I am too weak to cry.

Above me a bird

Slowly crawls across the sky.

Why is there nothing

Now to do but die?

This song kills me even more now that I have a son who almost didn't survive his own birth. Gah.

Giddy Up Go, by Red Sovine (DAMN, this song gets my goat!)

The highways that wind and wander

Over mountains and valleys, deserts and plains,

I guess I've drove about all of them,

Because for the past 25 years the cab of a truck has been my home.

And it'd be kind of hard for me to settle down and not be on the go.

Why, I remember the first truck I drove,

I was so proud I could hardly wait to get home and show my wife and little boy.

And my little boy was so excited, like when he saw his first snow.

He wasn't old enough to say too many words,

he just kept hollering, "Giddy up, go, Daddy! Giddy up, go!"

So that's what I named the old truck: Giddy Up, Go.

Oh, things wasn't too bad;

of course, I was gone a lot

And after about six years, I got home one day

and found my wife and little boy gone.

I couldn't find out what happened. Nobody seemed to know.

So from that day on it's been me and old Giddy Up, Go.

I've made a lot of friends at all the truck stops

and some of them would kid me about my little sign.

Of course, they knew where I got the name

because I'd told them about that little boy of mine

And how his first word about the truck was "Giddy Up, Go!"

Today I was barreling down old 66

when up beside me pulled a brand-new diesel rig, both stacks blowing black coal.

And as he pulled around and back in front of me

a big lump came in my throat

And my eyes watered like I had a bad old cold.

A little sign on the back of the truck that read Giddy Up, Go.

Well, I pushed old Giddy Up and stayed right on him

until the next truck stop where he'd pulled up.

I waited until he went in and offered to buy him a cup.

Well, we got to talking shop and I said,

"How did you come by the name on your truck, Giddy Up, Go?"

"Well," he said, "I got it from my pop."

"Dad used to drive a truck. That's what Mom talked about a lot.

You see, I lost Mom when I was just past sixteen,

and I lost all track of Pop.

Mama said he got the name from me."

I shook his hand and told him that I had something I wanted him to see.

I took him out to the old truck

and brushed off some of the dirt so the name would show,

And his eyes got big and bright as he read Giddy Up, Go.

Oh, we had a lot of things to talk about

and, buddy, I felt like a king,

And now we've just pulled back on old 66

and he handled that rig better than any gear-jammer that I'd ever seen.

Well, now the lines on the highway have got a much brighter glow,

As we go roaring down the road,

and we stare at that little sign that reads Giddy Up, Go.

The Luckiest-Ben Folds

i don't get many things right the first time

in fact, i am told that a lot

now i know all the wrong times,

the stumbles and falls

brought me here

and where was i before the day

that i first saw your lovely face?

now i see it everyday, and i know...

(Chorus)

that i am, i am

i am the luckiest

what if i'd been born 50 years before you

in a house on the street where you lived

maybe i'd be outside as you passed on your bike

would i know?

and in a wide sea of eyes

i see one pair that i recognize

and i know...

(Chorus)

i love you more than i have ever found a way to say to you

next door there's an old man,

who lived to his 90s and one day

passed away in his sleep

and his wife, she stayed for a couple of days

and passed away

i'm sorry i know that's a strange way to tell you that i know we belong

that i know...

(Chorus)

Carmina Burana "O Fortuna"

This will be very familiar to most of you, probably didn't know it came from a very famous opera. I didn't pick this particular video on YouTube because I particularly like the 300 (I fucking loved it) but because it was one of the better versions of the original piece. It's so fucking moving it makes me cry...

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, by Hank Williams Sr. I

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill,

He sounds too blue to fly.

The midnight train is whining low,

I'm so lonesome I could cry.

I've never seen a night so long

When time goes crawling by.

The moon just went behind a cloud

To hide its face and cry.

Did you ever see a robin weep,

When leaves began to die?

That means he's lost the will to live,

I'm so lonesome I could cry.

The silence of a falling star

Lights up a purple sky.

And as I wonder where you are

I'm so lonesome I could cry.

No offense, and while I loves me some Trent, I think the Johnny Cash cover was much more soulful and moving.
