turntables/record players?

Recommended Posts

By the way, a good name to look for is Technics, or Pioneer. I can get around $80 for some models in those brands.

Check to make sure the stylus (needle) is intact and that the cartridge (what the stylus hooks up to) looks decent. Replacing those can cost more than the turntable these days.

Technics or Pioneer heh. Good luck with that project.

Yeah Becky I know why you want them. Seriously just get a Technics SL1200 or 1210 (black version). If you really want to get serious about it then just go with the best. The resale value will never go down on them either depending on the condition they're in. Built like tanks they are.

Make sure the stylus on whatever you buy though is a DJ stylus. If not then you cannot scratch with it, at all since they are only made to play forward. Pulling back will damage the record. ALL DJing with records involves scratching, even if the audiance doesn't hear it. You do it when you cue tracks (push forward till you hear the beat, pull back to start of beat).

You will also need a mixer of some form as well if you have not gotten one already. The mixer doesn't matter so much IMO. You could get away with an $80 dollar Gemini POS if you wanted to to start out with.

Also FC I agree, for standard listining enjoyment the Technics liniar tracking turntables are great.

If I was a huge audiophile I'd get a 4,000 record player. I really want to save and get the 7,000 one that uses 5 lasers. http://www.elpj.com/

If they made a DJ version that you could actually manipulate by hand, wow that would be expensive... and cool.

What do you mean by that?

If you find one without a needle actually, you can take the head into like RecordTime, they sell needles for just about anything you can find-diamond needles are a bit more expensive, but you can get like 2 for $50 in a lot of cases...

-Sorry, attached the wrong quote...i'm hopeless, i tell you.

I mean they are usually THE name in record players for this artform. Most if not all DJs swear by Technics SL1200's. I've seen 1/2 working ones sell for way more than $80.

I wasn't saying good luck to you, I was saying good luck to her since she's the one looking. If I could get a SL1200 for $80 I'd be really damn happy.

Ahh. Gotcha. That's what I thought you meant, just wanted to be sure.

I went back and checked my tracking sheets (keeps track of everything I've sold on eBay for the past 5 years). I haven't sold that particular model, but I keep hoping to come across those types in my travels.

The Technics I've sold include the SL-D2, SL-QD93, Sl-220, SL-J92, the SL-1650 and SL-23. The lower-end ones went for about $30, the higher-ends went for $72-$80.

I see I'm not finding as many in the past couple years as I did in the first few. Damn eBay competition - hate it when people get wise.

doesn't gemini make imitation 1200's for pretty cheap?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

But imitation is exactly that.

Standon Magnetics also makes turtables, or Numark, or American Audio heh.

There is a reason DJs swear by the Technics SL1200 because they did it the best. They're like tiny tanks they are. I've heard stories from people I know about dropping them and stupid shit they've done, and they still continue to work. The high price is because you're paying for it to last. I can almost guarantee unless you really try to screw them up that they will be there 10 or 20 years down the road, and work almost as good as when you got them.

I'm into synthpop and future pop, do a lot of those kind of DJ's use vinyl? I would love to DJ sometimes but I have no interest in getting a turntable or records. Is is acceptable in the synthpop DJ world to play CD's? Those CD DJ decks are cool.

No they don't, simply because a lot of the music doesn't exist in vinyl format. Even then it's a specialty thing usually with limited releases. I got sent a Ficherspooner vinyl for the single "Just Let Go" in December. Other than older New Wave/Synthpop, newer major releases, and remixes I doubt much exists.

Digital CD turntables are really cool. Or you could go the MP3 route and get something like Final Scratch or PCDJ Scratch for that authentic vinyl feel lol (yeah I laugh but for the DJs who have started with vinyl and thats all they know it is a good investment).
