Goth Brooks
According to The Moscow Times, the Russian government is in the process of drafting a law to make emo and goth music illegal. Last month a parliamentary committee was convened to discuss a draft proposal of the Russian government's "Government Strategy In The Sphere Of Spiritual And Ethical Education" bill, the details of which were leaked to The Moscow Times. Among other measures, the proposed legislation calls for heavy regulation of emo web sites and for banning young people dressed like emos from entering schools and government buildings. The bill also outlines what it calls a "spiritual and ethical crisis" facing Russian youth, including the high rate of alcohol abuse, teen abortions and "negative youth movements." Emo ideology encourages and justifies drug use and sexual relations among minors, according to the bill, which also lumps emos and goths together with skinheads. "The point of the bill is so that by 2020, Moscow will have someone to rule its government," said Alexander Grishunin, an adviser to Public Chamber member Yevgeny Yuryev, one of the bill's three coordinators. "This is the first step in the public discourse." The bill's sponsors hope that it will be passed into law by the end of the year. http://www.themoscowtimes.com/article/1010/42/368995.htm

In Soviet Russia, wrist slits you! I think what disturbs me most in that article, however, is how the bill's sponsors equate all three subcultures with violence and 'aggressive behavior'. Sounds just like what legislators were doing with goth after the Columbine shootings....

Destroit
You can't fault kids for being alcoholic emos in RUSSIA. If I were in a fairly poor country with nothing to do and massive snow I'd cut myself too .

pomba gira
You can't fault kids for being alcoholic emos in RUSSIA. If I were in a fairly poor country with nothing to do and massive snow I'd cut myself too . Exactly. Maybe they should focus on creating a society where kids actually feel like they have some kind of future. It will be a happy day when old farts finally realize that any problematic "youth subculture" is a REACTION to the world THEY have created. And it's not like alcoholism is anything new in Russia for god's sake... in the years right before the old USSR split up, it was really common to see office workers, etc. passed out on the street in the mornings. I have a disc with a bunch of Metallica videos and there's one live clip from the '80s, shot at some air base in Russia. Intensely creepy vibe that really fits the song (Harvester of Sorrow)... the audience appears to be 100% male, and they look like they're going to just turn & start ripping each other apart any second. The "security" is these military-police looking guys, who all look like they wish they could just gun everyone down and be done with it... but by the end of the video they're all rockin' out too. What that had to do with the topic I really don't know... maybe my point was that Russians are kind of naturally emo (in the sense of being creepily intense and melancholy) anyway. Hell, Notes from Underground is probably the most emo thing ever written.
ttogreh
The thing is, Russia exports oil and natural gas, as well as lumber, gold, and several other very valuable resources. It is simply a matter of allowing that wealth to be distributed equitably amongst the 110 million Russians in this world. Gloomy music with violent themes really has nothing to do with the country's real problems.

ttogreh
I said equitably. Fair market conditions are not exactly prevalent in Russia.
Shade Everdark
Because Communism worked so well last time. Not to mention that no matter what you choose to call it, it was really just a dictatorship with a few of the superficial trappings of communism. Booga booga.
