With the election coming up and the word "race" being kicked around a lot these days in the culture, combined with serveral threads on DGN touching on the subject. Just thought it might be a good time to start another thread about this touchy issue...

Some things to discuss.

Is racism still alive in the U.S./Elsewhere... and if so, what form is it taking?

Is your family racist? Have you been racist? Are you still racist?

Do you know people that are racist without even they knowing are?

Does having "friends" of different races make you less racist?

What makes racism "racism"... is it off color humor about race? Is it who you are sharing the humor with?

I think it's a word that often gets bandied about far too easily, and used often as an excuse.

I also think that it can be (and more often IS) far more subtle than the bang-you-over-the-head type KKK style racism. I also find it irritating in the extreme when it is suddenly assumed that only minority racism is 'racism'.

I think that youll never cure humanity of making judgments about one another, often based on appearance or surface behaviour. We're human, and we've all done it.

That said, people are people.

the one thing that pisses me off is whites are always the only one's ever to be called racists.

I hate anyone who perpetuates the negative stereotypes associated with their colour, religion, gender, sexuality, etc.

So this means I do come off as racist. I hate poor 16yr old mexicans with 5 kids, loud black people at movies, anyone who puts the cost of their vehicles and clothes before their place of living and family budget... It's an ongoing list.

Oh.. and I hate the french, so I guess I am prejudice on some parts.

I am a half breed, my father Mexican, my mother Irish.

I grew up in a very "urban" area. Mostly Mexican neighborhood, because I didn't make my hair poofy and ugly, shave and draw my eyebrows back on, or listen to ghetto music I was considered something else completely. Even with my brother having the statis he did in our neighborhood I would still get in an fight ever now and then because my blue (or what ever color it happened to be that month) was me "trying" to act white.

Because I had a love for books, often with my nose in one, for science, for things above and beyond the ghetto, I was singled out and picked on.

Racism goes both ways. Is it still in America? As far as I have seen yes.

Is my family racist? Given the experiences they have had with people of other races, it's more of a defense mechanism then anything, they do not single people out and hate, nor do they avoid other people of different race, but there is a caution at first until the guard is let down and they know they can trust this person. That also goes for people from other neighborhoods of the same race. I wouldn't call it racist.

As for myself I'm with GB, I hate Mexican's that have 20 million kids they can't provide for, I hate the black lady that is loud and offensive just for the attention, I hate white people that are basicly tweekers and spend their kids food money on dope. I hate them all equally though. They are all asshats.

If you are asking me if people get judged in America by their color in a negative way, of course I will say yes. I'd be pretty naive to not see with my own eyes. I was raised to see the possible bullshit and hatred in every person, regardless of color. I see some things I don't care for in some people but those people would have no part of my life. Your color will be the last thing you'd see me base dislike on. I am much harsher when it comes to ignorance and stupidity. We cannot help what we are born in regard to color.

I was raised up north, where basically it was all white polish/german folks so there is quite a lot of racists up there. My grandmother is really the only one in my family that is though, and I'm not sure if it has something to do with her being raised in Germany during WWII or not. Most of the people I grew up with were racist just because their parents were and that's what they heard all the time.

I hate mexicans who come to this country and refuse to learn english, and this is only because when I worked in repo I would have to explain the the english speaking child why their furniture was being taken away. But I found this a while back on myspace and sorta agree with it in some ways. I don't consider myself racist but other people could who knows.

Whites, however, can almost certainly pinpoint their nations of origins. That is why WET/White Pride would be considered racist, there is no point in a white person being proud of his colour. Why should he, when he can instead take pride in his heritage and it's own customs.

I'm thinking the author of that was just giving a very vauge example. I'm proud of my Prussian heratiage, and I'm proud that I'm an American. I don't understand why people go around calling themselves chinese-american, or african-american if they were born and raised in this country. Aren't you an American first and foremost and then you have your different heriteges?

I never said anything about excusing racism. I see absolutely nothing wrong with NAACP, UNCF, BET, etc. Those DNA tests were not available when those were founded, so your reasoning is flawed. Until such tests, all the average slave ancestor could tell you was that they were from africa.. that is it. So no, telling african americans that BLACK pride is racist, is stupid.

And white pride is racist, imo. As I said, why should I give a damn that you are white and so am I? That doesn't make us brothers if you're a guinea wop greaser and I'm a drunk mick paddy boy. It's simply something for the white majority to rub into the black's face.

Well, actually not all are. When I was in my GED class's it was mostly whites and a few blacks. To make a very long useless story short, there was 2 white guys accusing the others of discriminating against the few black students in our class. But the black students actually stood up for the ones being accused telling the others they didnt say anything wrong and has no right to accuse them. But then there was a very strange turn-a-bout. The ones were accusing all of a sudden started calling the black students "nigger". So to me it seemed that they were racist the whole time but trying to pend it on the others. The reason I dunno, but I found it very pointless and stupid.
